Just been out for a meal.

Food arrived from the kitchen on either a slate or a giant block of wood.

What the fuck is wrong with plates???

Why do they feel the need to stick my food on something I stick on my roof or a bloody breadboard?

Is it just me? I WEEP for the poor neglected china.

We should try to predict what the next fashion will be. I'm going to say a mirror. Or perhaps an iPad.

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/01/2014 21:35

That wood thing looks like a primary school DT project :o

Yes I think these places feel we will be so blown away by the novelty that we won't notice there's hardly any chips and it's all aimed at filling up space with as little food as possible.

A local eatery here serves those DIY cook your own steak brick things

squoosh · 10/01/2014 21:36

Ewwww I've never thought before how they manage to clean the food planks properly.

appletarts · 10/01/2014 21:36

It's been since the recession, it's so they can give you piss small portions and you can't tell cos it's not on a plate.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 10/01/2014 21:36

Grin @ iPad.

an iPad with a picture of a plate on its display!

VikingVagine · 10/01/2014 21:38

No no. With the front camera working!

PortofinoRevisited · 10/01/2014 21:39

Anti pasti is what you nibble on whilst waiting for your other 3 course 15000 calories with a bucket of wine lunch in Italy.

PortofinoRevisited · 10/01/2014 21:39

I like Italy very much,

LegoStillSavesMyLife · 10/01/2014 21:40

So so sad. The poor poor plates. .

ChristmasCareeristBitchNigel · 10/01/2014 21:41

Maybe we should start a MN movement

"I'll have a rare steak with bearnaise sauce ON A PROPER PLATE please".

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/01/2014 21:42

:o

And with an actual portion of chips!!

NicknameIncomplete · 10/01/2014 21:42

I was served my food on a wooden block once.
Going out for lunch was meant to help with my hangover. It did not do anything for it but make it worse. I needed chips, chips & chips. I got about 6 chips.Hmm

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 10/01/2014 21:44

Ok, so we need a proper plate, with a proper portion of chips with sauces that aren't evaporating due to it being on a skillet or running off the side of a bloody bread board.

It sounds so simple, but apparently not.

"I'll have a rare steak with bearnaise sauce ON A PROPER PLATE please and the sauce needs to be roaming freely on the steak, not shackled. And no Jenga".

That will almost definitely fit on a T Shirt.

Bettercallsaul1 · 10/01/2014 21:44

By the way, OP, I first misread this thread as "WTF is wrong with PILATES?", and, as a total couch potato, was about to reply "EVERYTHING!"

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 10/01/2014 21:47

Yes indeed bettercalls. There is nothing right with Pilates in the same way that there's nothing right about chip jenga.

I totally agree with all the slate/chopping board hating...but one of our localism pubs does the best steak and ale pie in the world whic comes with a teeny tiny little glass tankard of ale that you can pour on your pie once its opened (or drink) and it is gawjus, and I want one!

Slubberdegullion · 10/01/2014 21:47

What happened to a nice plate with a pattern on?

Before the slate was a MASSIVE mofo white plate

And before that was a white plate

And before that maybe was a plate with a nice bit of decoration on it.

I would like a bit of prettiness with my food.

AttackOfTheKillerMonsterSnowGo · 10/01/2014 21:48

Not sure wtf a localism pub is though! ;)

ariadneoliver · 10/01/2014 21:49

TheArtic you may well be right ... Chicken In A Basket is back on the menu at home you can have chicken served in a colander or a la Come Dine With me

MorrisZapp · 10/01/2014 21:49

Have we moved away from humungous soup bowls then? There were a good few years of that trend. I liked it, as I'm a food masher.

lekkerslaap · 10/01/2014 21:49

I hate slate tiles, wooden boards and zinc buckets...

Give me a plate anyday!

Hassled · 10/01/2014 21:50

We had square plates for a while too, didn't we? There was a time when all plates were officially square.

squoosh · 10/01/2014 21:50

Some places do the 'eclectic' Granny's patterned plates and mismatched cutlery. Apparently they think it looks charming.

Hmph.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 10/01/2014 21:51

'I was served my food on a wooden block once. '

With a teeny little axe to cut it up?
