Earning bonus

Had a slightly heated discussion today with my boss. Basically some people in the office are given a chance to earn a weekly bonus, sales related and these people are also able to earn the same bonus the rest do which is a standard profit related yearly one.

When I said to him that really for motivational purposes surely it should be one structure for all the office he replied that 'most people round this table earn way more so the small bonus they earn each week really balances everything out'

AIBU to think 1) that the comment was abit below the belt and aimed to make me feel belittled (was in meeting with several other people) and 2) bonuses should apply to everyone for the fact they are a motivational tool regardless of your salary?

Am perfectly happy to be told IABU

Not sure I quite understand your post fully.
But as I understand it, sales people traditional have smaller salaries in return for sales related bonuses.
Then in many places all staff can get profit related bonuses.
If that is what is happening than I think its probably OK.

Do all of you do sales? Or do you mean the sales department earns a bonus for making sales?

Bonuses are usually motivational for most roles in my experience but they make a lot more sense for sales people as if they don't sell they are losing the company money. You might as well say paying everyone £1,000,000 is a good motivational tool. Maybe it is but companies tend to structure pay to be most cost effective for the business.
