Seeing as the government appear to have kicked off their campaign Hmm I thought now was the time to start nagging talking about voting.

This weekend's talk about pensions shows in a nutshell why we need to vote. The government - any democratic government worldwide - is swayed by the need to please those they think will vote for them. So if you're not getting what you want from this government you need to vote because it is only when everybody like you votes that the wind will change in your governmental favour.

Register to vote, talk to your friends and family about voting, create some momentum and you will see change. The election of 2015 could see the biggest turn out from women under 40 ever. Anything is possible. There's been talk in the past about the 'mumsnet' election - well wouldn't it be great if that was a reality. Not in the sense of posters all voting one way, that's not the point. The point is wouldn't it be great if every user of this board voted? If every user of this board made their voice heard. It can happen.

And I'll be posting every day until it does Grin

Of course everyone should be encouraged to vote. Winston Churchill was right when he said something on the lines of democracy being the worst system of government apart from all the others that have been tried.

I only wish we had a system of PR, as I live in a constituency where the MP will be there until retirement or death if it comes sooner.

Bumping for Friday!

DizzyZebra · 17/01/2014 16:47

I didn't vote last time (I can't even remember the elections, i was very ill). I will be voting this time. I don't want the tory scum back in.

HappyMummyOfOne · 17/01/2014 18:32

I dont always vote as cant make it due to commitments but intend to this tine as would prefer not to have the joint party with the lib dems. Not keen on a few policies like free school meals for all etc but labour dont seem to be focussed enough on people taking personal responsibility so its the best of the bunch i guess.

SuzanneUK · 17/01/2014 18:36

Voting serves only one purpose - to reassure the powers-that-be that you've fallen for the great big illusion of democracy they've created.

If everyone stayed at home on voting day, things would have to change.

Voting only perpetuates the status quo and keeps us all in dire straits.

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 18:37

Would you consider applying for a postal vote HappyMummyOfOne?

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 18:39

If everyone stayed at home on voting day, things would have to change.

What changes would you suggest Suzanne?

And is it really likely that supporters of the more extreme parties would stay at home instead of clapping their hands with glee at the low turnout from everyone else?

LukeAtMe · 17/01/2014 18:42

Can you vote without being on the electoral roll? (Be gentle).

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 18:49

No, if you're not on the electoral register you won't be able to vote in any UK elections.

here

HappyMummyOfOne · 17/01/2014 18:50

Newyear, did that last time as really wanted Labour out. If there is a chance of them getting back in i'd register for it again if i knew i was unable to attend.

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/01/2014 19:00

newyearhere
"What changes would you suggest Suzanne?"

I believe that voting numbers would go up by adding
None of the above to the voting form.

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 19:11

Do you think there's a potential party that most people would like to vote for, Boney? If so, then why doesn't someone start it?

newyearhere · 17/01/2014 19:12

(potential as in doesn't exist yet)

PeachyPlumFairy · 17/01/2014 19:18

I ALWAYS vote, and always will. I vote on policy or on a more local basis, often who I know; this time II will vote on the party that I think is by far the best outcome for my ds3.

None of the above is pointless; we already have spoiled ballots counted. if you don't like the parties we have here, which I quite understand, campaign to them to represent your angles. But try.

PeachyPlumFairy · 17/01/2014 19:22

''Or by sitting there self righteously you allow the current government to continue to bully and marginalise the poor and the vulnerable. I don't agree with all aspects of all Labour policies and vehemently disagreed with Blair's warmongering. I do however think that a Labour government is the least worst solution for the excluded''

Yes, that.

DS3 has disability, I will most likely vote for the party that I think offers him the most safety when I can no longer do so.

In the past I voted for an AM (Wales) I know and who helped us enormously, but he is now a Lord and his party are, well, Lib Dems.

We're the affluent edge of a Labour Ward and may possibly be moved to a neighbouring TTory Ward, that might be interesting to say the least.

LukeAtMe · 17/01/2014 19:34

Thanks, new.

BornOfFrustration · 17/01/2014 19:43

Good idea op, it would be nice to see a record turnout. I'll be voting, as my old dad says "if you don't vote, you can't moan".

Lillily · 17/01/2014 19:46

m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25664580 interesting article about how and why parties target certain areas and not others. If you feel they are not interested in you because they don't knock on your door, this may explain why.
