To just want to call people by their names?

Geckos48 · 06/01/2014 08:49

Okay I know a group of women who, though I speak to very few of them, wish to be called by their 'fairy' names

One of them who I am stil in contact with, is insisting that I call her by (an obviously made up) name that she has chosen for herself.

I find this hard for a number of reasons;

  1. I don't think of her as a 'pixie' or a 'fairy' or whatever so when I am talking to her it is natural to call her by the name I have know her by for around 10 years.
  1. I don't know that that this perpetual childlike image these women are portraying is necessarily something I want to support either directly or indirectly

3 I just think it's a bit weird (if I'm honest)

I had a conversation with her last night, which felt a bit tense to be honest and it came up that she wants me to call her bluebell or whatever the hell it is.

AIBU to just not do this? Knowing it will likely end whatever friendship we still have? We are very different people now, she gets her political views from Russell Brand and 'doesn't appreciate debate' so I've already had to hide her posts in Facebook just because I can't stand to see her writing about stuff she doesn't quite get and being unable to justify it in any way.

Also, we are all hurtling towards our thirties now, is rather disparaging at the dreams and ideas we have regarding buying our own property and instead focusing (still) on travelling and living in the moment

I am only doing that fairy name thing once, it scared me, my name is.

Gossamer Pepperwitch. I sound like an itchy condom.

mrsjay · 06/01/2014 09:34

you are secretly fascinated by this aren't u mrsjay? secretly pining for your v own fairy name? admit!

it is bonkers i wanna be a fairy

EauRouge · 06/01/2014 09:34

She put "I am a fairy on her CV"? I would kill for friends like this, they'd be a source of constant amusement to me.

NigellasDealer · 06/01/2014 09:35

hahaha mine is 'Hemlock Snowtree' sounds well sinister

SeaDevilscanPlay · 06/01/2014 09:35

Well I am Gossamer Hailfilter. I have cheery turquoise wings like a butterfly and a dress made ourt of cobwebs.

schokolade · 06/01/2014 09:35

While I agree that this is ridiculous, I think you should call everyone by the name they want you to use. Bubbles etc may be silly, but it's not offensive or anything so I would try to use it.

If they start swapping them every 5 seconds to new names then you have a case for refusing.

YellowDinosaur · 06/01/2014 09:36

Tremendous nigellasdealer - from now on i'd like to be known as meadow catwitch :o

Snorting though at the stairlift ad in that page though - surely fairies would just fly.....

Op yanbu. I like to not act my age but this is a step too far

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob · 06/01/2014 09:37

I`m Oak Cornglow, I love it!!!!

Doinmummy · 06/01/2014 09:37

My fairy name is
Buttercup Starfrost
She grants wishes. She lives in clover fields where fairy rings grow. She can only be seen during the first snow of winter. She wears bright clover green and has handsome pink butterfly wings.

This is me now ^^

ComposHat · 06/01/2014 09:37

ninja those powered by fairy dust stickers tend to be placed on the most knackered, dull & unfairy like of cars.

Nothing says whimsical fairy magic to me like a clapped out Vauxhall Vectra with a slow oil leak. Equally I am sure that Tinkerbell tools it it round Nevrrland in a decade old rusty Ford Ka with six advisories on its last MOT.

spiderlight · 06/01/2014 09:37

I am Moth Vineshimmer
'She brings couples together. She lives close to caverns and stalactite grottoes. She can only be seen when the first flowers begin to blossom.
She wears dresses stitched with crystals and has gentle green butterfly wings.' Grin

Going by that, I'm invisible today!

Ledkr · 06/01/2014 09:39

My new fairy name is glittery clitory

I shall expect to be addressed as this at all times from now on if you please.
That means you too pil Grin

ISeeNoReasonForBandage · 06/01/2014 09:39

Gossamer Moonshimmer. Makes me sound like a shade of nail varnish.

misskatamari · 06/01/2014 09:40

I'm Moth Flamespider. That's pretty shit. Apparently I wear clothes made of crystals tho Grin

pictish · 06/01/2014 09:40

Just did that fairy name generator.

I am Heather Reedshimmer. I play the pan pipes, live near stone circles, my dress is sky blue and my wings are a deep green. I only come out when the first flowers of summer bloom.
See...I'm a fairy too. Yeah...I'm gonna put that on my CV.

Binkyridesagain · 06/01/2014 09:40

Why is everyone getting nicer fairy names and descriptions than me? I'm going to sulk.

I play tricks on small children and the eldery. I live in a spiderwebbed 'wonderland' and wear the blasted things as well.

Is this things trying to tell me I should do some housework?

justtoomessy · 06/01/2014 09:41

Fruitpip willow witch is my fairy name. I come form brighton and there are plenty of fruit loops like this about. They'll be the ones whinging when they get to 50-60 that the government isn't going to support them very well once they hit retirement age! The fuckwits!

No wonder it annoys you but I would be seriously taking the piss out of them and telling them to grow up. Constant source of amusement though.

YellowDinosaur · 06/01/2014 09:42

Also cackling a bit at brash lasses - I've now got an image of 5 30-something women, all tall and a bit chubby, with their greasy hair in high bunches, painted on red cheeks with glitter on their love handles :o

AmberLeaf · 06/01/2014 09:42

I have a sneaking suspicion that the OPs fairy friends know that it riles her so...

I love my fairy name!

Fruitpip Goldshimmer

She likes to steal shiny coins and pretty trinkets
She lives in stony places and tumbling wastes
She can only be seen when the first flowers begin to blossom
She wears a heather-coloured dress and has bright lemon coloured wings like a cicada

Im a fairy thief!

TheHeadlessLadyofCannock · 06/01/2014 09:43

Petal Willowspider. Grin Thanks for the link, Nigellas.

OP, this is the most bizarre thing I've heard in ages. You really mean that it's not just at work or in work contexts they want to be called by their inferior to mine fairy names?

They're missing a trick. Avalon isn't bad but the others are lame. I mean, if you were going to have a fairy name you'd go for Titania, wouldn't you? Or Morgan le Fay?

NigellasDealer · 06/01/2014 09:44

I come form brighton and there are plenty of fruit loops
oddly justtoomessy, I have vaguely come across some odd women interested in fairies and angels before - guess where I lived at the time Grin

candycoatedwaterdrops · 06/01/2014 09:48

fairy.namegeneratorfun.com/

According to the above, based on my real name, my fairy name would be; Bracken Quilldancer

I feel a name change coming on!

LoonvanBoon · 06/01/2014 09:48

Love the fairy name generator - I'm Bindweed Beamshimmer.

deXavia · 06/01/2014 09:48

I'm Rain Agaricweb but better that I bring hallucinations.Shock
The rest is fairly meh - She lives near bubbling brooks where Lords and Ladies and cuckoo's pint grow. She can only be seen in the mist of an early morning. She wears a dress made of deep blue petals and has russet-coloured wings like a brightly coloured butterfly.

But wow I bring hallucinations - on phone but will name change the instant I get home!
