To Find this Woman in the Cinema Rude

Me and my friend were watching a film in the cinema tonight. She doesn't wear a watch and must have been checking her phone for the time - its a habit of hers to do this, or to ask people the time. I was sitting next to her and I didn't notice it.

There was an empty seat to her other side between her and a woman. The woman suddenly boomed out in the middle of the film, "If you want to play your phone, you can go outside and do it instead of in here".

It was mortifying, and she interrupted the film for me. I was really embarrassed for my friend, but we didn't say anything.

At the end of the film, as we were standing up to leave, I said to the woman "I don't really care if you were disturbed by a light during the film or not, I don't want to have to the film interrupted by your booming voice". She then started arguing back (she said something like "Oh you'd like to be a cheeky one, wouldn't you, and some other stuff) but we turned our backs towards her and her husband so that she was talking to ourselves, put on our coats and left.

Kind of ruined the film for both of us. Normally I find going to the cinema relaxing!

Sparkly: If you can't get a signal, there's no point leaving your phone on is there?

If there is, presuming that you have hands, you could hold your phone and keep it on vibrate.

If you sit near the back in the aisle seat (often the best seats anyway) you can just duck out to check without bothering anyone else, unless it gives you pleasure to be so obtuse.

Maybe there's a case for intermission to be brought back. Time to go pee, stuff your face, check phone, awesome:

VulvaVoom · 04/01/2014 20:09

Sometimes I don't get MN. Someone checks their phone a few times in a film and it justifies being yelled at? Not in my world where I would probably just think 'Oh there's someone's phone light' and then get on with ignoring it and watching the film.

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2014 20:09

Now this seems like a great idea. Smile

What if every other person in the cinema were checking their phones every 10/15 minutes?

Fair enough if those who occasionally check need to for a valid reason, but let's face it, most people will be checking because they are looking at facebook/twitter/texting.

Next time I'm in the cinema I will attempt to Bluetooth this thread across to anyone I see on the phone.

hmc · 04/01/2014 20:30

Which presumably would require you to be on your phone too?

Snatchoo · 04/01/2014 20:34

Just because it doesn't bother you Vulva doesn't mean it doesn't bother others.

Like Maryz said, it is very distracting in a dark cinema and yes your eyes take time to adjust.

I don't think anyone thinks the OPs friend shouldn't have been yelled at however true that might be but her friend was behaving inconsiderately! I complained at the bloke that sparked up a ciggy I complained at the bloke who just kept checking his phone. I pay for my cinema tickets as well.

yes vulva, that happens in my world too! though i do wish cinemas had clocks (small ones at the back like they used to) films seem to go on for days and days sometimes.

BoneyBackJefferson · 04/01/2014 21:44

hobnob
would you care to explain?

RandyRudolf · 04/01/2014 21:53

That's quite chilling boney. Just goes to show how dangerous it can be to confront some individuals.

RandyRudolf · 04/01/2014 21:54

Which presumably would require you to be on your phone too?

Fight fire with fire.

katese11 · 04/01/2014 21:57

Man, I'd forgotten this but boney's link reminded me...when I worked for Warner Village (now Vue), someone got their ear cut off after confronting teenagers in the cinema. No, it's probably not worth it....

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 04/01/2014 22:06

boney I think I may be seeing something different to others when I click on that link and its a weirdy ad link
apols think I have issues with my phone and adblocker for some reason something similar has happened twice today
again apols

katese11 · 04/01/2014 22:09

Yeah, it should go to a bbc article...?

I thought it (bleach article) was posted as some sort of joke in poor taste (apols if I was wrong). I was one of the people who mentioned Vue...
