AIBU to think that sooo many people have lazy or non-existent hygiene stadards?

I just despair at people's disregard for basic hygiene.
Bathroom sinks at people's houses with no soap, let alone a nailbrush,
greasy hair, dirty toilets, grubby fingernails, animal hair floating around and cats sitting on food-preparation surfaces. Am I stuffy or are people really grim about hygiene these days, despite how easy we have it wrt access to soap + hotwater?

If you don't have a nail brush how do you get muck from under fingernails?

It was nailbrush that jumped out of the OP at me too. I think I have one somewhere, but I wouldn't want to share it. Why would it need to be next to the kitchen sink.

It sounds like you need different friends. You don't seem to like the ones you have.

I have 2 nail brushes, reet posh I am. The house is in a mess but at least I have clean nails.

I have clean nails and no nail brush. It comes out when I wash my hands (if they are dirty I mean).

We have 2 nail brushes.
1 is used for scrubbing potatoes and the other is used for cleaning football boots.

I adore my friends. They know I think they should all have nailbrushes. They just laugh at me and call me a clean-freak.

I'm surprised at the disdain shown on here towards the poor old nailbrush! I would have thought every house would have one...how else do you get your hands clean after mucky jobs like gardening? Or do some of you never get your hands dirty...?
Saying that, mine lives in the bathroom cabinet, not next to the sink, and I would not consider a deficit in someone's hygiene practices not to have one.

Look pretty clean to me, and without a nail brush. Think the question is, how do you get them so dirty that you need a nail brush to get them clean where normal cleaning should do the job?

and yes... I keep it in the bathroom on the sink - however, my hair is currently greasy, and I will be going out to walk the dog like that later. I have no dummy suckers, but I recently had my niece crawling around the dry dog food that trashdog was munching on, and I didn't leap in to stop her 'sharing'. I'm a big fan of experiential learning

Call me stupid but what are you doing in someone else's bathroom that would require you to use a nail brush?

Did you know that nail brushes cause skin abrasions and can actually increase the number of bacteria on your hands? Hence it no longer being recommended for surgeons to literally "scrub" up but instead do a thorough surgical hand wash?

My brother treats his dogs like children and lets them lick children's faces and eat scraps off the table. I hate it but I don't see him very often and it's not really done my kids any harm I guess.

My dh grew up on a farm and came into contact with all sorts, the house was never very clean, there were 7 kids and it was a working farm so his mum didn't have much time on her hands to clean. He has the strongest immune system I know and never comes down with colds or coughs.

I have been to people's houses with carpeted toilets, black mildew all over their bathroom windows and clothes everywhere - up the stairs, in the sink, the bath, etc.

People have different standards. I wouldn't judge them for it, only if it reached an unacceptable level where they or their kids were suffering because of it, i.e. neglect.

I've also been in super clean houses where everything is pretty much steam cleaned and there's not an ounce of dust anywhere. I couldn't live like that.

I think I'm somewhere inbetween.

I keep a nail brush near my basin... I change it once a month otherwise it defeats the purpose. I change the families toothbrushes then too!

I keep our bathroom exceptionally clean.

It is a downstairs old fashioned place, it keeps it fresh.

Our new cat is banned from work surfaces as was our old ones...

Weeell I live in a pretty fluff-filled, unkempt home so I realise people who really are clean freaks might find my house gross. But I try to keep up general cleanliness, clean toilet, clean sinks, fridge and food preparation etc. I am aware of what kinds of unhygienic behaviour are dangerous IYSWIM.

Therefore I find some friends' places disgusting fpr specific reasons. Like the friends who had a load of full, stinky binbags in their LOUNGE waiting for bin day (presumably). Also have a friend who is a doctor, but whose kids are very frequently ill with allergies and chest problems. Their bathroom is heaving with black mould which can be really harmful, and on a weekkend away with them I found a layer of black mould inside the spout of their toddler's sippy cup! - due to repeatedly not being washed out properly. Bleugh.

No excuse for these people - they are all educated, able-bodied etc.

I'm so worried about the mould I've been trying to think about how to say something but I haven't dared yet.

We have a nail brush, however I am now going to move it- the thought that a visitor might use it grosses me out.

Why baking of course...nice bit of sweetshortcrust, all that rubbing in with the flour and butter will fairly lift the grime out.

Eww I dont have dirty friends. I dont know anyone that has a nail brush we all have mani and pedis once a week.

You mus keep some interesting company, OP.

And nail brushes are revolting things. If I'be been outside digging up veg and, despite plastic gloves, have dirt under my nails that I can't scrape out, then I might use an old toothbrush, or even the same brush I use to brush the dirt off the veg. That's rare though.

I think it's odd to have no soap on the sink, especially in a loo. Ick. Wouldn't want to share a nailbrush though!
