AIBU?

AIBU to think that sooo many people have lazy or non-existent hygiene stadards?

I just despair at people's disregard for basic hygiene.
Bathroom sinks at people's houses with no soap, let alone a nailbrush,
greasy hair, dirty toilets, grubby fingernails, animal hair floating around and cats sitting on food-preparation surfaces. Am I stuffy or are people really grim about hygiene these days, despite how easy we have it wrt access to soap + hotwater?

I have a nail brush. Somewhere. Its for taking dog shit, mud off The 'Tudes wellies/trainers.

I don't have soap. Soap is rank and reminds me of my nanna with soap cars so slim that you break in half when you look at them.

I have hand sanitizer in with the toilet ams another in the bathroom

BATH CAPS

Also plenty dog hair floating about.

I think we have a nail brush upstairs somewhere. I have never been hugely bothered about hygiene, especially not since having a dog. We also operate a 10 second rule for food dropped on the floor. We don't seem to have any more illnesses than anyone else though.... so why does it matter?

You ain't seen nothing OP and are being a tad precious.

Now, if you'd said you'd opened a fridge and it was covered in a layer of mould then I might be able to agree with you on judgement of rankness.

Why would you need a nail brush when you have a bog brush ... has nobody heard of duel purpose these days! nobody the country is on its knees.

I'm still reeling at the poster yesterday who had never had a skidmark or a pebbledash in their toilet and therefore had never had to do any more than 'drizzle' a little bleach to ensure a spanking pan!

nailbrush

I cannot think of a more vile horrid harbour of worm eggs and general dirt than a nail brush!

Op people who make these wild accusations like you are the people who think they clean a cup with a old germ infested scrubber used for the past year, in a sink of old dirty water with everyone elses germs floating round in it.

I never needed a nail brush until I got sculptured nail extensions. They leave a ridge on the underside of your nail where dirt would gather that wouldn't disappear with normal handwashing.

Other than that I'm a right skanky cow.

Do you mix in aristocratic circles? Ha Ha

Have you looked to see if there are any hand sanitizer dispensers on the walls? You may have missed them. If not perhaps you could offer to fit some. Another thing you could do is carry a handy pack of antiseptic wipes when you next visit. If you make sure you wipe all the surfaces etc that you come in contact with, hopefully you will avoid having contact with said grot and scum. Make sure you offer them around when theres a dog nose/dummy drop incident. yoou wouldn't want to appear selfish. HTH

Only the soap sits by the sink everything else is in drawers. It's tidier and a belt and braces approach to hygiene as I feel flushing with the lid down is not enough. I also keep my nails very short and do a clinical hand wash most times.

Tea towels are changed with each washing up.

I shower every day and wash my hair. However my hair is generally starting to get greasy again by the end of my shift. As there's no showering facilities and I want to get home I end up outside with greasy hair. It's just the type of hair I have. Guess that means I've non existent hygiene standards Hmm

But how clean do we NEED to be? All this angst over hygiene seems so ridiculous to me. It's cultural, and culture changes. There are no unassailable standards, just fashionable trends.

MrsDB I don't wash fruit either. I didn't eat wash home grown fruit when I was a child and definitely remember eating baby carrots straight from the garden just wiping the earth off.

Birdsgottafly I agree. I don't post on these threads to be all wacky about this. I genuinely don't care and my household genuinely has never suffered any of the horrors predicted.

For myself I think growing up drinking unpasteurised milk from our own cows, eating cheese and butter made from it, eating eggs from our own extremely free range hens and ducks and eating said hens and ducks might have helped.

Although my cleanliness standards are no doubt nowhere near as high as yours, I do appreciate clean-freaks as they give me something to aspire to in my fantasy life where the house is immaculate

Hence, I have to vote YANBU :)

I often wonder why the residents on "how clean is your house" don't get all the illnesses listed, based on the bacteria, damp, hair etc.

There should be research into that.

No nail brush here. How have I got to the age of 47 NOT washing my hands every 20 minutes, and letting my dog mill around shedding hair in the kitchen and not made myself of my children ill?

Blush

Or is it that we are all just blessed with guts of steel?

I have a nail brush.

I was going to say YANBU, I thought it was going to be a thread about a thread. I don't understand, barring disability why people don't wash and clean.

However, I have a cat that will only drink from running tap water and a very hairy German Shepherd.

I worry about harmful bacteria, food hygiene etc, but not dirt that doesn't cause illness.

I try to keep on top of dog hair, but unless I am baby sitting, I won't Hoover up more than once a day, unless I leave the Hoover out and just keep at it (yes my days can be that empty).

It takes money to wash and dry, so I can understand people minimising that.

I don't know if you are UR or not, it depends on the level and kind of dirt.

Tea towels aren't minting if they're washed after use rather than being left to dry off repeatedly. DP went on a food hygiene course and is now Tea Towel Police.

Oh I'm no clean freak, the sickly ones are always the ones who rub down their antibacterial cleaner with antibacterial wipes and then clean their hands with antibacterial gel.

Show bacteria some love people, it's your friend!

My husband is vile. He'd never not have a shower etc but I still have to tell him to wash his hands before he touches food! Don't care if he poisons himself but over Christmas with all that pulling out cold joints to carve he would just lunge at them with a knife and his hand on the other bit. Disgusting! Causes a row every time too.

We have a gardener so I'm fine then.

My son was brought up in my squalid house and when we dropped him off at hall of residence for first year uni he had to fill in a form with his doctor's name."Mum, who is my doctor?"Me Doctor Y"., son Who is he?" having never been near him after his MMR. The only time I recall him being sick was the Captain Scarlet birthday cake incident (which I didn't make but vomiting up red fondant icing didn't half scare us)
