to explain the rules of MN Bingo to those who were wondering WTAF last night?

Last night was very entertaining - until a few idiots started joining in without knowing the rules. So here's a handy cut out and keep guide for the next time.
To start a Bingo thread, ensure it covers at least two well known classic MN themes. Ensure it is outrageously judgey.
Do NOT however involve domestic violence, mental health, or disability, or anything else which any sane person would have strong views on.
Fair game includes Bridezillas, fruitshoots, Greggs Sausage Rolls, Parent and Child parking...
If you see someone being sucked in and posting an obvious 'hasn't got the joke' reply, don't JUST laugh at them. Tell them nicely it's a joke thread, either on the thread or by PM.
If you're getting a lot of serious replies, you've probably judged it wrong. Acknowledge it was a joke thread, apologise, and report it.
Meanwhile, some of the good ones from last night have been allowed back, so I'm going to enjoy reading them now!

I as usual have no idea what the hell went on.
turns lights back out and hibernates

SauceForTheGander · 01/01/2014 19:15

I reported one post aimed at the mod because of the unpleasant and mocking language used. Just the kind of language / prejudism the joke threads were supposed to be parodying. I get people were angry and possibly tipsy but some posters went too far IMO.

It got silly and out of hand. Fault on both sides and a NYE MN won't forget am sure.

King rollo . It matters because it gives a disgraceful impression of mn users. Particularly newcomers who had no idea it was a "joke". Even people who use mn regularly didn't "get it". Furthermore the op had the audacity to begin this thread giving "rules" as if what happened was ok because it was "just a joke". Mums, sahm especially get enough critisim for not trotting off back to work without making us look like a group of intellectually challenged arseholes.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/01/2014 19:40

No, Sauce, there wasn't fault on both sides. The fault was on the side of the posters who went too far. Some people have no personal boundaries and behave like overgrown toddlers, constantly 'Look at Meeeeeee, look at meeeee!'.

It will all be forgotten and that will be a shame because probably the same ones will do it all again in the name of 'fun' and 'aren't we so amusing, chums?'. Hmm

MNHQ did nothing wrong to take the site down, it could have taken a hell of a lot longer to get it back up than it did and if there's any apology to be made for preventing those needing support from getting it - then it isn't due from MNHQ.

SauceForTheGander · 01/01/2014 19:48

Lying I was lurking on chat last night and found it very uncomfortable. When I say fault on both sides I mean the Mod in question should not have been left to handle drunken NYE threads.

It was like a restaurant full of drunk NYE angry diners and only one waitress to deal with everyone.

MNHQ have apologised for understaffing and some posters have apologised. Others are still angry.

I think this has been about something else TBH but I'm a couple of glasses of wine down and can't express it properly ....

Madambossyboots · 01/01/2014 19:51

Lying is right. Well said.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2014 19:51

So there's a sub-plot? Confused

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/01/2014 19:54

Sauce, yes, sorry, I misread you. I was on 'chat' last night too. I thought the thread was bloody awful and it's really made me think less of some posters that I quite liked.

The posters that are angry though, what do they actually have to be angry about? They're still posting so haven't been banned - despite the fact that some of them should have perhaps been.

I really do think though that some are just relishing the drama of it all, for whatever reasons, and blethering on that MNHQ must answer to them now. I can't imagine the control that MNHQ must have not to push the red button and obliterate them because I would.

Enjoy your wine! GrinWine

Blimey. Missed all that, and I was on here. Too busy moaning about NY.

It's no one here likes Jimmy Carr. The best comedy is meant to be offensive and make you go "ohh". Get over it.

SauceForTheGander · 01/01/2014 20:17

No sub plot but I think this was more about posters being fed up that some topics / threads are not challenged and the joke threads were a piss take out of the controversial topics started by trouble makers but left to stand.

MN is big enough to include joke threads. What wasn't right was attacking the Mod who didn't know how to handle the joke threads.

What's the difference Rollo? It's not ok to make jokes about vulnerable people full stop. The so-called 'jokes' offended many people last night. Some people have no concept of personal 'brakes' yet are quick enough to jump up and down when they're offended themselves.

The threads weren't funny and they broke guidelines. The ones that didn't are still up.

HOMEQCRITH All the really horrible ill-judged 'joke' threads are gone now, thankfully.

An example of one of the joke threads that is still on view is this one - which is satirising Bridezillas.

instead of lowering the tone This made me laugh on a site famous for its anal sex threads and for the amount of swearing. Grin

Perhaps there could be a subforum for the more delicate people who don't drink, or laugh and can't bear seeing anyone else doing either.

Madambossyboots · 01/01/2014 20:35

Rollo, then good riddance ! Po faced I'm not, principled I am.
Drunkness is allowed so long as you don't lose touch with being a decent person

uptheanty · 01/01/2014 20:35

Some posters appeared to be quite goady last night and seemed to enjoy the confusion they were causing less knowledgable mumsnetters.

It was all very school girl Blush

The reason they are angry is that they have exposed themselves. So now they're defensive and trying to deflect blame and attention.

Really they should just be embarrassed, apologise and move on.

"No sub plot but I think this was more about posters being fed up that some topics / threads are not challenged and the joke threads were a piss take out of the controversial topics started by trouble makers but left to stand"

Exactly. That's how I read them.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/01/2014 20:38

Do what you want, Rollo, nobody cares... they will do their own thing.

ExitPursuedByAChristmasGrinch · 01/01/2014 20:38

This all makes me quite sad

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/01/2014 20:41

It doesn't make me sad, it's a chatboard. I like spending time here when I'm not doing something else. I like most posters. Last night was out of hand and there are still posters grumbling away defending their pathetic behaviour.

This too shall pass...
