To hope that the car battery dies and the owners get stuck?!

I know the title doesn't sound very nice but bare with me.

I live on a quiet road which leads to a small shopping street. Since around 4pm today a car has been parked outside my house, not bothered about this, not blocking the drive. However the alarm has been going off since about 5! Not a normal car alarm but an annoying high pitched beep which stops every 60 seconds then carries on! The neighbours have been out and a few of them went down to the shops and the pub and enquired about the owner, no luck. We are the only houses around here and the car definitely doesn't belong to anyone in the road or their visitors. We have phoned 101 and community support officers came round, but because not causing an obstruction they can't do anything! Confused

I have a 9week old colicky baby who doesn't sleep at the best of times, and my OH is on a 14 hrs shift starting at 5am. Is it bad that I want the battery to die and for the owners to be stuck on our road so that the neighbours can give them an ear full?!

You are certainly not unreasonable. Sounds bloody awful! Poor you. Hope it stops soon.

MissBurrows · 30/12/2013 02:49

Not unreasonable at all.

MerryChristmasMollyHooper · 30/12/2013 02:53

I won't tell you my advice as it involves criminal damage.

I do hope it stops soon.

any bricks laying around?

steff13 · 30/12/2013 03:55

I don't suppose the door was left unlocked? If it was, you could possibly pop the hood and disconnect the battery yourself.

In my city, we have a noise ordinance, so after 10pm the car would be ticketed, and if it continued it could be towed away. Does your town have anything like that?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 30/12/2013 05:52

You poor thing. I thought this would be from yesterday afternoon, I didn't realise it had gone on all night.
My response would be law breaking too so I won't post it.

LovesBaublingTheTreeAgain · 30/12/2013 06:06

What about reporting tge noise?

Shitehawke · 30/12/2013 06:17

Get someone to push it in front of your drive, blocking in a car....THEN call police and get it towed.

underachievingmum · 30/12/2013 06:42

Not at all - how horrible! Has it stopped now??

If not - have you tried white noise for the baby? Helps drown out noise of my older two for the baby? Radio tuned to static or I have an app.

OP if this isn't solved then contact environmental health. Where we live, if an alarm has been going off for a while (I think an hour) then they can try to contact the owner and if no luck they will either silence or remove it. Good luck.and hope you get some rest.

LoreleisSecret · 30/12/2013 09:33

Disconnect the battery.

Joysmum · 30/12/2013 11:22

Call 101 and report it. They can get the contact details of the cars registered keeper and contact them. I know this because I reported someone blocking our drive once.

Bit late now, but wrote it anyway for future reference.

Justforlaughs · 30/12/2013 11:24

YANBU, in fact removing the battery might cover both situations! Wink

Punkatheart · 30/12/2013 11:25

But she did 'phone 101 - they could do nothing.

laura2323 · 30/12/2013 11:46

Just an update!!

The alarm finally stopped at 6am! And in reply to some posts;

  • couldn't move car, even with neighbours help, was a big 4x4 type.
  • called 101 community officers came out, but because wasn't causing obstruction they wouldn't do anything. They also said if any damage is reported on the car we would have to pay as they would know it was us! We've now reported car as abandoned hoping police would turn up. So far no sign.
  • environmental health not answering phone, maybe closed for holidays?!

Had an awful night and I do not feel sorry for the owners! Neighbours are taking turns on the lookout, I'm actually surprised that the windows are still in tact!!
