Do you know anyone in real life who votes for UKIP?

And if so, do you judge them?

If you're a UKIP supporter yourself, are you happy to declare it in public/at work?

I haven't yet (well I think!) meet anyone who votes for this party. Someone from FB linked something from UKIP FB page disagreeing with it. This lead me to their page. The supporters of this party come across as thick (going by the FB page)

I can't believe this is the same party that was lead by that talk show host. Silk something.

Anyway that's my opinion but my questions above still stand.
Thanks.

Thankfully I live in in Scotland where those tossers get next to no support.

NearTheWindmill · 30/12/2013 20:05

I totally support same sex marriage.

*She also has a lot of friends in nmw jobs who cant get work.

So, they have work but they can't get work. How does that even make any sense????*

You have to be a lot more careful than normal on posting exactly what you mean on this type of thread - I had forgotten so obviously confused those who are not willing to take the jist of what I wrote and translate it!!!. Obviously what I meant was that the work they do is nmw but they can't get said work. They are looking for the jobs they are used to doing which are the lower end of the pay scale but there are fewer of those jobs or more people looking for them.

I really think that the way these threads go makes all discussion over these issues go underground - fuck a duck - I am not even a UKIP voter yet am being hammered. It certainly does not make me more inclined to dismiss UKIP totally as the arguments against it seem so uninformed - namely shouting that you must be racist, thick, bigoted etc if you so much as defend anybody who has voted UKIP in the past or intends to. I don't think that is true of most UKIP voters. I think they may be uninformed of the entire UKIP manifesto - but how many voters really go through any parties manifesto in great detail prior to voting.

Going back to the argument over population - Who knows if its right but the telegraph reported that England is the most crowded country in Europe now (overtaking Holland recently) and 'Beyond Europe, England's population density is among the highest in the world for major countries. England ranks third in density after Bangladesh (1,045 per sq km) and South Korea (498 per sq km). '.

Is the Telegraph like the DM??? I never read it so don't know if it is right wing and therefore scare mongering.

peggyundercrackers · 30/12/2013 20:17

@minifingers - actually I don't really read any newspapers as they all have their own political slant and are only interested in their latest favourite party I do watch the news though. I also read www.aljazeera.com/ every day though as it normally puts a completely different slant on what is reported on our news channels and provides more info about what goes on in Europe etc. whereas we never see very much about whats going on.

frogwatcher42 · 30/12/2013 20:19

Why didn't my *'s work to make it bold?????

peggyundercrackers · 30/12/2013 20:20

frog the telegraph is a RW paper hence the reason it gets called the torygraph by some people.

frogwatcher42 · 30/12/2013 20:22

Ok. So are its facts re population density wrong then - I hadn't seen it before in any other papers. Just did a google after the discussions on here. I know the DM outright lies - but does the telegraph?

friday16 · 30/12/2013 20:25

Who knows if its right but the telegraph reported that England is the most crowded country in Europe now (overtaking Holland recently)

Suppose that's right. So what? Amsterdam is as densely populated as London (more densely, depending on how you define it). Cumbria is less populated than any part of Holland. What conclusion do you draw from this? Can you name a large capital city that doesn't have a very densely populated core and a nearly as densely populated surrounding area?

fairisleknitter · 30/12/2013 20:34

All my long life it was a (useless) fact that the Netherlands was the most densely populated European country. If that has now changed to being the UK it's quite interesting. But then I'm partial to a fact or two.

frogwatcher42 · 30/12/2013 20:36

Fairisle - it may not be fact - I would check more meaningful sources before realigning the facts in your brain!!!

I never even knew that the Netherlands was the most populated European country - but then I can't retain much info!!!

fairisleknitter · 30/12/2013 20:38

It's on my list of things to google!

fairisleknitter · 30/12/2013 20:39

It is irritating to have it implied though that being interested makes one an unreasonable citizen.

SpringyReframed · 30/12/2013 20:42

My Ex Twunt votes UKIP. Says it all.

friday16 · 30/12/2013 20:46

I never even knew that the Netherlands was the most populated European country

And when you went there, did you think "wow, this is an incredibly crowded country, what they need is some population reduction"?

fairisleknitter · 30/12/2013 20:48

It seemed pretty busy when I visited, no wildernesses.

TirAnna · 30/12/2013 20:48

I know a couple who would both vote UKIP if they could, but can't vote at all as they're both immigrants Confused

ocelot41 · 30/12/2013 20:49

Yes and yes. Unless you vote on auto, your politics are a reflection of your deepest values. So I don't buy into this 'its just a private, personal thing' bollocks.

fairisleknitter · 30/12/2013 20:55

It's not puzzling TirAnna, they will be more affected by new immigrants competing for resources and would be acting logically.

joanofarchitrave · 30/12/2013 21:11

My MIL says she will vote UKIP. Mainly re Europe. She is an intelligent woman. I judge that choice, but I don't judge her. UKIP is the symbol of a lot of problems, some more real than others IMO.

I think I can say that i will always vote, and I will never vote UKIP. However, I actually voted Tory a couple of years ago (second choice in the Police Commissioners thing) so I guess nothing is absolutely impossible.

ForalltheSaints · 30/12/2013 21:26

I don't know anyone who admits to voting for them, though I did see Nigel Farage in Brussels when I was there last year, wittering down into a mobile phone at Midi station.

There again, I don't know anyone with a James Blunt album though he sold millions.

loveolives · 30/12/2013 22:19

Heartbroken you sound like a very unhappy person. I hope you're okay. I think you need to start being a little less bitter about other peoples beliefs. I hope you feel better soon.

longfingernails · 30/12/2013 22:24

I vote a tactical mixture of UKIP and Conservative.

Where UKIP have a realistic chance of getting into a meaningless position of power, such as in EU elections, or where there is no hope for either Tory or UKIP, I will vote for UKIP.

My goal is not to have a UKIP government. The goal is to force the Tory party to be more right-wing. It is to draw a line in the sand so wets like Cameron know they can't further defile the great party of Thatcher, Disraeli and Churchill. It is my small way to prevent Cameron's liberal Etonian guilt getting in the way of working class Tory priorities like immigration, crime, low tax.

However, I am rather atypical. Most UKIP voters would never vote Tory because they feel all politicians are the same.

This is a mistake. Even with someone as wet as Cameron, even in coalition with the duplicitous Clegg, is a billion times better for Britain than Red Ed.

ravenAK · 30/12/2013 23:01

It's great when a poster like longfingernails comes along after a few naive posts claiming UKIP are neither objectionable nor swivel-eyed.

Fabulous post. Grin

lessonsintightropes · 31/12/2013 00:04

Just out of interest, I have a number of UKIP voters in my extended family, but for very different reasons.

Exhibit A: DSIL - a fox hunter, small-state, hater of social services, refers to the kids in my DS's kids junior school in central London as 2/3's 'forrin' i.e. 2/3rds BME - despite about 80% being born here and most are Forces children. She chooses to live in rural Hampshire and has as little to do with metropolitan life as possible - sold her house in Sidcup and moved to the country when it started 'filling up with that sort'.

Exhibit B: DCousin; a banker for some years until made redundant in the late 90s, whereupon moved to South America, met and married a wonderful lady, moved back to the UK with her. They are both teachers and about as open minded on immigration as can be, and think it's a good thing - but BOTH voted UKIP in the last couple of general elections as he disagrees strongly with EU federalism and loss of sovereignty (sp?). Thing is, this cousin and his very pejorative views of monetary union, has been proven right on the EU legislative and monetary things.

So whilst some will vote UKIP and be bigots, others won't, and will still have what I think is a valid opinion. To paraphrase a previous OP:

Can't/won't vote Labour = no viable economic policies and still have members of the cabinet who voted for Iraq
Can't vote LibDems = helping Tories to destroy all the social institutions even Maggie couldn't destroy
Can't vote Tory = elitist scum
Won't vote UKIP = racist majority of members.

Who's left to vote for (deliberate pun)?
