Do you know anyone in real life who votes for UKIP?

puddingsforsandy · 29/12/2013 22:15

And if so, do you judge them?

If you're a UKIP supporter yourself, are you happy to declare it in public/at work?

I haven't yet (well I think!) meet anyone who votes for this party. Someone from FB linked something from UKIP FB page disagreeing with it. This lead me to their page. The supporters of this party come across as thick (going by the FB page)

I can't believe this is the same party that was lead by that talk show host. Silk something.

Anyway that's my opinion but my questions above still stand.
Thanks.

Three. Not friends of mine.
All pissed-off teachers.

GobbySadcase · 30/12/2013 00:52

Congregate communities for the disabled, not4

Dawndonnaagain · 30/12/2013 00:55

Yes Gobby , thank you.

ravenAK · 30/12/2013 01:02

'Don't believe in gay people marrying, you are a homophobe.'

Yes - that would make you a homophobe.

'If you disagree with vegetarianism, you are veganist. Fat people, fattist'

How does one disagree with vegetarianism? You no likee, tuck into a steak. who on earth is trying to stop you?

& what on earth have fat people got to do with it? you are cross because you think you aren't supposed to take a dislike to fat people? How odd.

navada · 30/12/2013 01:04

Yes - quite a few actually. & no, I don't Judge them.

theimposter · 30/12/2013 01:09

I suspect it is because the average person is pissed off and feels totally unrepresented by the traditional parties. I wouldn't think badly of anyone voting for them as I don't see UKIP voters as closet racists or bigots although I'm sure there is the odd one. I don't bother voting any more as every party seems much the same and none really listen but UKIP are the only party strongly opposing EU membership and I think many who dislike being part of the EU (and the rules that are imposed with little choice or ability to vote for or against) means that they feel this is a party who offers significant change. Can't see them ever getting in though.

On a related note has anyone met anyone c add lled Nigel who isn't a complete bellpiece?

BasicFish · 30/12/2013 01:18

This article made me smile (sorry for the dm link, too tired to search for a more reputable one, but it's also on the bbc news website. The UKIP members vitriol in this article made me chuckle though.)

Nigel Farage says Britain SHOULD accept Syrian refugees

I agree with him actually, and am disappointed that we can't help more, although I can grudgingly understand the reasons why. I can just imagine some of the more rabid UKIP supporters being utterly thrown by this.

And this.. If you don't agree with people who come to the uk as health tourists, you are racist, if you don't agree to open borders you are immediately racist and xenophobic

Being a health tourist is actually not a given. I'm British and when I first visited the hospital where I was due to give birth in a few weeks, I was quizzed for half an hour, had to send in copies of passport to prove I was British, and my new tenancy agreement to show I was intending to stay in the UK for the next 6+ months - all because I had lived abroad (still paying uk taxes though) and just returned. If I hadn't been able to prove that I was staying for 6+ months, had connections here and was British, I would have had to pay to give birth there. I can't be the only one they picked on!

And we don't have open borders. Not by a long shot. Despite what the xenophobes think Wink

Caitlin17 · 30/12/2013 01:19

On a completely unrelated note I've now got We're only making plans for Nigel, we only want what's best for him" stuck in my head.

BasicFish · 30/12/2013 01:19

ComposHat

I knew a cat called Nigel once, he was nice.

BasicFish · 30/12/2013 01:26

The Daily Fail comments on the Nigel Farage article make for hysterical reading.. I love this one,

"We do NOT want them in the UK, they should go to the nearest safe country like un law states. 1951 declaration on refugee status has to be scrapped for good, times have changed. These people are from the far east so they are nothing like us. we are over FULL."

I was quite sad at the "nothing like us" comment, until my brain caught up with "Far East." Grin Twat.

Not4turning · 30/12/2013 01:27

Basic Fish, just read article and scrolled down to comments - immediately someone said 'where will all of the xenophobes go'.

Over used labelling for someone who has seen the word somewhere else and jumped on the 'ist' band wagon!

I agree, though not all of the time with 'wot Nigel sed', but being thick I am probably very wrong and really should find out what everyone else thinks and agree;)

Mimishimi · 30/12/2013 01:54

I'm a descendant of Freemasons - why would you label them all as rightwing bigots? It's quite the opposite IME although they are fiscally conservative with regards to welfare benefits etc.

carabos · 30/12/2013 08:22

I seem to know quite a few Tory voters and as far as I can gather pretty much all if them are intending to vote UKIP next time. None of them are racists and those aren't the issues that concern them.

MsONatto · 30/12/2013 08:29

I haven't voted for years but am so utterly disillusioned by what we've had in the past 10 years that I see no other way to go. I will be voting UKIP.

WooWooOwl · 30/12/2013 08:35

I know a couple of people that vote UKIP, and no, I wouldn't judge them negatively because of it. That's because I'm not small minded enough to automatically assume that voting UKIP means they are racist.

People are starting to vote UKIP because they feel spectacularly disillusioned and unrepresented by the other parties.

Democracy can't work properly unless we have a range of views to choose to support, and for that reason, I'm glad that UKIP has come along to make the bigger parties reassess themselves and to provide slightly more choice.

AKAK81 · 30/12/2013 08:39

Yep I would happily vote UKIP but there has never been a candidate in my area. The other issue is that voting UKIP gives the Labour scum a better chance so I'd have to vote Tory anyway!

PMDD · 30/12/2013 08:43

Yes I know loads. All of them are over 60. I don't judge them. I understand their perspective. I just think that they are too late to hold back the tide of immigration. It should have been done 10-15 years ago.

friday16 · 30/12/2013 08:57

All of them are over 60

And will therefore actually vote. Decisions are made by those that turn up.

Bloodyteenagers · 30/12/2013 09:08

Yes I know a few people.
Some vote because of the stick they got for voting bnp.
Others because well I am not voting for the immigration bit, just the rest of what they represent.

So yes I judge them.

Yes my MIL has a life time membershipHmm

I've known her for 26 years and she's always been a xenophobic and racist so UKIP suits her just fine.

She's full of misinformation which she spits forth at every opportunity. We do challenge her on it, as do our DDs (20 and 23).

AKAK81 · 30/12/2013 09:32

Dawndonnaagain · 30/12/2013 10:14

For those voting UKIP, why? I honestly don't understand it. okay, a sensible discussion on immigration is needed, but their other policies are terrifying. Dismantling the welfare state and putting those with disabiliities into gated communities (workhouses). Removing the human rights act, which removes yours and mine as well as those you may feel shouldn't have access to them. Bringing back the death penalty. Really? You really want that?

WooWooOwl · 30/12/2013 10:28

Why?

Because many people agree that British people should be prioritised for social housing and that immigrants and visitors should have to pay for NHS services. Or that the human rights act is too liberal and forces us into decisions that just don't make sense, like that guy that messed up the boat race and expects to be able to stay in the UK for no reason.

The things that you speak of may well be their policies, I don't know, but a quick look at the UKIP website doesn't bring up anything of the sort. They may be going to lengths to hide it if they genuinely believe all disabled people should be in workhouses, but if that information isn't public, then people won't know about it and won't vote against it.
