Black tie house party in normal suit..

We are off to a black tie do at someones house tonight. My husband does not possess a dinner jacket etc so will be wearing a smart suit tie white shirt etc. We both hate dressing up so refuse to hire or borrow never mind buy new stuff for a one off evening. How unreasonable are we being?

I love black tie. DH and I often dress up in it for dates at home for fun. And my family often do black tie for Christmas Eve /NYE - but definitely in a flexible way - if someone came in dark suit that would be fine (but so long as it looked like they'd tried to make an effort, rather than couldn't be bothered).

Actually the men love it as it's an excuse to wear all sorts of nonsense that they usually can't get away with eg velvet suits, silly waistcoats, their great granddad's ancient vintage suit and what have you.

I'm shamelessly bumping this in the hope that jjazz will come and tell us who wore what!

Depends how well you know the people. If they are good friends they shouldn't mind. Lounge suit & tie are acceptable "smart" wear. If you don't know these ppl well then you should either get black tie or not go. A dark suit would pass for a dinner suit if you get a bow tie to go with it.

Approx 50 people. Very modern BIG house in village. Every man except DH in dinner jacket Dickie bow etc. Every lady in full or knee length except one in smart trousers(not me). DH in dark suit white shirt dark red tie. Not one comment made. Fab party. Good to see how much interest my aibu generated. H N Y.xxxx
