It's a well known fact all these pay day loans charge massive interest..why didn't she just go to charity shops/cheap toy shops etc...surely it will be nice for her kids to have LOADS of pressies BUT in the long run they will suffer when she's stressed because she can't afford to pay the loans back Confused we were scraping to get by this Christmas (I lost 3 members of my family, including my children's Nan and Father)...AIBU to think she's wanting to give them TOO much??? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2529393/Unemployed-mother-two-borrows-1-700-EIGHT-payday-loan-companies-buy-hundreds-Christmas-presents-children-says-pay-back.html

Debt collection is a job and not a popular one. I don't suppose traffic wardens etc are too popular either. I don't think we're talking here about strong arm bullying tactics and debtors cowering behind their front doors.

This woman is an absolute moron! End of topic!

The people who are in debt and admit to it, work with us, take independent debt management advice and work or budget to pay their debt pay my wages. I often have to turn own offers of payment if the information shows it is not affordable or that they or their families would suffer as a result.

Those customers pay my wages.

Customers like this woman call me a cunt, threaten to burn my house own and ask me 'how can you sleep at night?' when we dare to suggest they pay back the money they borrowed. Yes, they boil my piss. I'm professional with them, attempt to empathise. But "fuck off you cunt, I'm not paying back fuck all" does challenge my empathy somewhat.

I sleep at night knowing I'm fair, don't take money from those who genuinely can't afford and often accept 50p a month for debts of £7,000 or more when appropriate.

I sleep knowing I'm working the only job I can get to support a disabled husband and a ten year old.

milk

You are entitled to your opinion but the term you use was deemed as unacceptable a long time ago.
Perhaps lacking in intelligence, or not very bright may be more apt.

If you look at the website which is credited on the photo it appears to be a website where people sell their stories which (I assume) then get sold on to the tabloids. I assume this woman contacted that website who then passed on the story to the Daily Fail. Complete set up.

Kungfu

I can see now why your piss is boiled Xmas Grin
I thought you meant people in debt in general and had no idea this was the reaction you get on a regular basis.
For the record, I wouldn't ask how you slept at night, it was your seemingly lack of empathy I didn't understand.
Of course I understand more fully now, thank you for explaining and apologies for misunderstanding your stance.
It can't be an easy job.

We're trained to take into account changes, children, that food and heating and housing must come first. We put accounts on hold so people can get real debt advice from charities such as Stepchange and places such as citizens advice.

Sorry MoreThan I meant the above in relation to my lovely customers. I put things on hold, stay late while we chat over solutions, give them time and accept payments of pence.

I've genuinely cried for some, cancer, bereavement, rough starts are common causes of debt. I also get called worse than muck.

Fwiw, if anyone here is struggling with debt, ring them, tell them why, offer what you can, 50p a month paid on time will stop them calling. If they won't accept it, try step change. Amazing charity.

DizzyZebra · 27/12/2013 20:15

That's awful kungfu. Does that happen a lot? I saw a programme about repo men and assumed it was sort of showcasing the worst minority.

KungFuBustle · 27/12/2013 20:19

Me crying? Bout once a month.

Getting threatened or screamed at, bout twice a day.

In a lot of cases it's fear. And I can even manage to empathise then.

It's those who take out knowing they can't pay back and berate me for being part of the inevitable attempt to reclaim the money.

perlona · 27/12/2013 22:06

I can't believe that some people are trying to justify her behaviour by claiming she isn't hurting anybody. From her own mouth; “When I start paying back the loans I won’t be able to pay the bills or buy food and drink and basic necessities. Then I’ll take out more loans and it will be one big, messy, circle.”

She's hurting her children by failing to provide them with a stable, secure home. She's knowingly put them in a position where they will be without food, drink and other basic necessities, that's outrageous and there's no excuse for it.
