To think I must be a chav, as MN has deemed me so?

According to threads I've been reading lately, most things I do seem to be marking me (and my family) out as chavs.

I fed my children formula and jarred food - this is chavvy
My Mum likes cards that say Nanny and she sends relative-specific cards - chavvy
My children like to wear character clothing - chavvy
I shop at Tesco and sometimes even Asda - chavvy

AIBU to be a bit tired of seeing the word 'chav' on here lately? I've challenged it and said that it's offensive, but just get the 'well, it's only online, why are you bothered', as if that makes it ok.

Yes, I realise I'm being over-sensitive, but me and my family aren't 'chavs' and I'm tired of it being bandied about (along with 'common') to describe things that people see as beneath them.

The 'Tude got his dad one but they don't have Cockhead cards

An obvious gap in the market. We should address it.

Feenie · 24/12/2013 10:37

And to never, ever admit you are a goth, MoG Wink

MurderOfGoths · 24/12/2013 10:40

Haha, even if it means going so far as to wear neon yellow Feenie Grin

MadAsFish · 24/12/2013 10:42

Hee

Feenie · 24/12/2013 10:45

Grin Grin

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 24/12/2013 10:51

Mad I know! He would receive several just from me Grin

I'm off to Tesco for some bits. I need alcohol for thee mother of mine and a present for the stepdad from my son.

Any Leeds MNers looks out for me sat in the alcohol aisle with The 'Tude running around. I will be the tiny mum rocking and drinking Tesco Own Vodka

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/12/2013 10:52

I have to wonder - would you wish an emo a miserable Christmas? Grin

MurderOfGoths · 24/12/2013 10:55

Hahaha never seen that before Mad! Love it, though tbh the man is almost beyond parody, have you seen his website?!

Theonlyoneiknow · 24/12/2013 11:00

This whole 'chav' crap really pisses me off.

My beautiful DS had his name utterly slated on the babynames board recently because it is 'chavvy' and thus hated by (and yes I counted) 70+% of people who commented on it.

Come on!!!! What kind of people are these posters, god forbid anyone dare to judge you on anything that you do, WTF.

LightsPlease · 24/12/2013 11:01

Sp I just laughed out loud at aldi netto and lidl were embarrassing to be seen in. Don't forget kwik save.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/12/2013 11:05

Until this year I had no idea there was such an issue about "name" cards. My family have always given each other name cards and so does everyone else I know.

MN can be weird.

I tick all the same boxes as you op - except how babies were fed. Because I don't yet have children.

Don't understand how ff is "chavvy" mind. What dickhead said that?

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/12/2013 11:05

theonlyone people didn't actually skate the name, they says it was very popular in certain circles, or with certain types of people. I know it upset you, but it's not quite the same thing.

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/12/2013 11:05

Sorry, slate, not skate.

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/12/2013 11:06

Aargh. Says = said.

RandallFloyd · 24/12/2013 11:18

S'all right TheOnlyOne, my DS's name is both 'horribly chavvy' and 'awfully middle class' according to MN.

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 24/12/2013 11:23

Lights Oh yes! Kwik save and the cardboard boxes.

It was really shameful. I remember been 13 and refusing to get out of the car and go into Netto with my mum. It was right near my school and loads of people lived near it. I laid down on backseat til mum drove out Grin

LightsPlease · 24/12/2013 11:26

Red and white stripey bags. What happened to netto ?
Hiding in the car was a good idea. I remember 'your mum shops in quik save' insults.

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 24/12/2013 11:28

It closed down. All either Asdas or Farmfoods.

They used to chant:

N E T T O
Grab your Netto bag and go

WitchOfEndor · 24/12/2013 11:33

Who cares what anybody else thinks though? I wish people could get over the need to label others, whether to sneer at or aspire to. We are all individuals and should be treated as such, not lumped together because of appearance/accent/education/DC names/Spider-Man tshirts.

Rant over, let's all link arms

LightsPlease · 24/12/2013 11:33

Oh wow you had a song for it. You didn't grow up in South London by any chance did you.

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 24/12/2013 11:44

No. I'm in the West of Yorkshire

AmberLeaf · 24/12/2013 11:55

Back in the day a chav started of as a charver

Both words are romani in origin really.

Chav =child

Charver = prostitute!

Chavvy = friend/mate

stubbs0412 · 24/12/2013 12:18

Amber leaf you beat me to it!
I was just going to say the same thing
How did Romany for child evolve into what some people now use for anything or person they perceive as beneath them?

AmberLeaf · 24/12/2013 12:23

I'm surprised it hasn't come up until now stubbs0412! someone [often me!] usually points it out on the 'chav' threads.

How did Romany for child evolve into what some people now use for anything or person they perceive as beneath them?

Not sure, but it doesn't surprise me I must say.

higgle · 24/12/2013 13:01

OP, I do all the things you mention and I am generally regarded as quite posh.
