I've just had a text from mum asking if she can have a few bottles of my fizz to open on Christmas morning (I have 6 bottles left over from my wedding in January).

If me, DH and DS were going to be with her in the morning I'd of course take a bottle or two, but we are not as have the in-laws with us this year.

AIBU to think this is a bit off and that they should just buy their own fizz? Dad has just been on the phone giving it the 'well seeing as I paid for it...'

Just to clarify, we're not talking Dom Perignon here either folks, just a decent sparkling wine... I'm only keen to hold on to it as DH and I like to pop a bottle on special occasions.

AIBU???

So, mixed responses!!

My gut feeling is that this is cheeky of them. We are hosting Christmas night and will be providing plenty of food and drink.

But, you are right... It's Christmas after all and I def don't want to be the family grinch...

I just messaged them saying I felt bad and I'd get a couple of bottles to them tomorrow.

Dad replied saying 'don't bother about it, I've moved on'

Charming!

I think it's super cheeky. If they wanted it back they should have asked LONG before now (like saying "let me know if there are leftovers" when he bought them). Makes it yours.

All that said, why wouldn't you have shared it? Did they want it for when you weren't there? Or did they want it for when you were all there? I would feel bad if they'd been planning something special and you saying no ruined it.

holidaysarenice · 24/12/2013 01:33

Just reply saying okay. It will wind him up more than engaging.

givemeaclue · 24/12/2013 01:37

Sparkling wine is about £7 a bottle, why are you all so het up about it, and who saves sparkling wine for special occasions? Just buy as you need it

AdoraBell · 24/12/2013 01:45

See, this is why we paíd for our own wedding. Personaly I'd do what Shoofly suggested. Or say you've used it as gifts for people they won't ever meet To ask about it.

AdoraBell · 24/12/2013 01:47

Crossed post, so don't bother then, as he's clearly got over it.

Cerisier · 24/12/2013 02:21

Your parents should have asked at the time if they wanted the leftover bottles.

YANBU, but it is a shame that there is now so much bad feeling for your first married Christmas. Your DF's response was awful. What a fuss over a £7 bottle or two.

BrianTheMole · 24/12/2013 02:27

Its a bit rude of them. Why don't they buy their own if they want some?

Dolcelatte · 24/12/2013 05:13

I hope my children don't turn out to be so mean and ungrateful. You are lucky that your parents are still around to celebrate with. God forbid that they ever need anything more important, such as financial help with their health or care needs; you certainly won't be providing, it will you?

Ghastly, just ghastly! You have probably cast a cloud over their Christmas, despite your father's brave words, but why would you care - you now have enough wine to see you through the next six Christmases, if you are careful.

MalibuAndMilkPleaseLibertine · 24/12/2013 05:18

You've got 6 though?!

Give them a bottle fgs.

sashh · 24/12/2013 08:36

YABU to have wine left after a year.

AlaskaNebraska · 24/12/2013 08:38

Ooh good response from your dad.

AlaskaNebraska · 24/12/2013 08:39

Can you imagine thd convo at his? "After all I paid for that wedding and she won't spare a couple of bottles if wine I bloody paid for!"

Shnickyshnackers · 24/12/2013 08:41

How much did it cost?? a tenner?

bunnymother · 24/12/2013 08:43

Your parents sound petty on this point - sorry you know have something so ridiculous as an "issue" over Christmas. Have no idea why they would even ask and not just go shopping for themselves. Makes me glad we were able to pay for our own wedding and avoid all of this sort of thing. Good luck - hope your parents actually can move on.

Whats the problem. Its xmas, a time for family ans sharing. You lucky to have a family. So many of my patients are spending xmas alone. You havent used the bottles. You dad seen that. Sparkling wine goes off if left too long. My excuse....for not keeping it for long. Sparkling wine is for sharing. Get into the christmas spirit ans share with your family. Bring back memories of your wedding day.

Mamafratelli · 24/12/2013 08:51

You are the one who's going to come out of this looking very bad. Just imagine the conversation. "I paid for the wedding and she wouldn't give us a couple of bottles of plonk that I paid for". Take them round and apologise.

londonrach · 24/12/2013 08:51

Yabu forgot to add that

EdithWeston · 24/12/2013 08:52

I think it's going too far to say "petty" - more likely they asked on the off chance, as they knew there was drink still being stored by OP and thought it might as well be drunk at Christmas as continue to sit unopened (as it perhaps has done through other high days and holidays). But they weren't that bothered, so got more in when none of the unused was forthcoming.

I think it's a non-issue, especially now, unless you want to pursue it.

EdithWeston · 24/12/2013 08:53

Oh, and it can go off. You really do need to drink it soon to be on the safe side.

Trills · 24/12/2013 08:59

YA both BU.

He should have just bought his own wine in the first place.

You should have generously offered to share, once it was mentioned.

Fudgeface123 · 24/12/2013 09:01

I don't think you're being unreasonable, it was a gift so why should you give it back? How did they know you had some left over anyways? I've still got 4 bottles of Champagne left over from my wedding, I shall be opening one on Christmas morning for Bucks Fizz and then using the others on special occasions, not handing them over to anyone.

Just because they paid for the wedding doesn't mean they can claim back anything not used....why can't they buy their own?

Fudgeface123 · 24/12/2013 09:02

It would be different if the OP was going to their house she'd probably have taken a bottle with her (I would hope) but don't see why she should just drop some off for them
