The ancient Greek etymology is fear of foreigners, kind of. Foreigners being those from outside the city states such as Athens. The word evolved to include situations where people ascribe traits to other nations / groups, a bit like the current hysteria over Romanians where I live.

I think.

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 09:21

I was confused as that definition says about (this is how iv read it) falsely putting another group/culture up on a pedestal - bit like UK and US IMO

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 27/12/2013 09:24

Xenophobia is defined as fear of strangers or foreigners.

Hating someone for being different, or assuming all of their 'bad' traits are due to their nationality, is the way most xenophobia manifests itself.

Just as homophobia is fear of homosexuals, which can manifest itself as gay bashing and violence.

Mumsnet is full of American xenophobia.

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 09:27

I think maybe that alludes to the alienation tactic of ascribing 'noble traits' to groups (like 'the noble savages' of the empire) as well as more insidious stereotypes, like the passionate French, the liberal Dutch etc.

I don't fucking know tbh.

Amrapaali · 27/12/2013 09:32

ashamed's definition had me thinking. Exoticizing(!) another culture is also a facet of xenophobia? It never would have occurred to me. But it does make sense, I think.

You are right, LineRunner.

ginslinger · 27/12/2013 09:32

Let's just eat baked goods instead

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 09:34

Interesting POV - I personally appreciate american culture. We did Florida this year while kids small and cant wait to do a fly drive route 66 trip when they are older. My ref up there to UK/US was in re to politics.

Anyways...I recently studies national identity theory (pyschology) and they didnt quite cover it like this..but I dont think I did that chapter very well at.

I think I experience that sometimes, I dont live in the region I am from. There was an awful North / south thread on here earlier in the year.

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 09:35

its warmed and that dribbling is last of the brandy butter.

SilverApples · 27/12/2013 09:35

I thought all the 'In the UK we...' was very interesting.
Because the majority of threads in active are about how many UK relatives are not doing all those stereotypical nice things.
I also think that the issues the poster is having with him could happen with any 22 year old stranger in someone else's house over Christmas.
Whatever nationality.

I love Americans enough to make up for all the weirdos on here with rectal sticks.

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 09:38

Weird though that American tv is so (rightly) highly regarded on MN.

I personally adore ER, The West Wing and yes, Friends.

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 09:39

I confess I havnt read the thread, Iv read enough of 'X' person is here or we are visting 'Y' persons house - what should we do.

We did all our visiting in early Dec.

Then we have done out own thing since then.

Last Christmas activity today 'What the Ladybird Heard' - I might find some fodder in the trip to start a thread...

BTW I did laugh at the thought of somone standing rinsing a jar of sweet mince! might aswell by a packet of raisins!

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 09:42

I mean it's weird as in somewhat contradictory given some of the not very nice sentiments sometimes expressed about Americans.

It's too bloody early for me to be thinking.

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 09:47

I still haven't washed up from Christmas Day.

Amrapaali · 27/12/2013 09:48

Any panettone going around? I didn't buy any at all this year.

The first bite is always so-oo good, then it all goes stale and crumbly before I can even close the box.

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 09:51

I failed with the festive shopping this year so only have Cadburys mini rolls, I'm afraid. My DD appears to be having them for breakfast.

GodRestTEEMerryGenTEEmen · 27/12/2013 09:52

A point I often make Liney when people start complaining about the Americanisation of the UK.

Well, then, stop watching our films and TV and stop listening to our music.

If America was a race? MN would be full of racists. Especially with there 'But American TV/films are okay.'

Yes, and black people are excellent at sports and music.

FFS.

Now I really must fold laundry...

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 09:58

TEE, see you later after chores. My place is a tip.

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 09:58

I havent washed any clothes for nearly a week. i think we might have to go out to play wearing shorts for underwear with holes cut into sleeping bags for makeshift onsies with slankets for added layering.

DH and I would be quivering wrecks if Sky Atlantic channel was took away from us. He comments frequently how shit UK drama is (no a Downton fan) and how US make tv like big budget movies. The irony of Game of Thrones for a start!

Do you think that thread is a mickey take based onthe Downton Christmas episode - there is a couple of great scenes in that. The servant is 'put in his place' but the Old women puts the Earl and countess in their places good and proper, it's all direct reference to culture too well societal living.

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 10:01

The thread started at least a week before Downton, I think. Was surprised I missed it tbh.

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 10:06

I feel a rant comming I best get back to Farmville

PacificDingbat · 27/12/2013 10:21

Lordy, it's all gone a bit heavy here, hasn't it?

Yes, MN over Christmas was not exactly full of peace and love and angel dust, was it?
And some posters I think posted in rather an atypical way to their previous form... Hmm.

I luffs the US of A, but reserve the right to not love every single of its inhabitants (present company excepted) Grin

ashamedoverthinker · 27/12/2013 10:23

amen god bless america

LineRunner · 27/12/2013 10:35

Sorry, Pacific, mea culpa.

On a lighter note, I will be seeing Le Git Chaud tonight. I'm hoping he may sort out my poorly downpipe.

I haven't see him since Christmas Eve. The bastard keeps putting his kids first. Bless. Xmas Smile
