To think we're so lucky to live in this area (UK)

DP and I were just talking about where in the world we'd rather live. Although we all like to moan about high bills etc. we came to the conclusion we've done ok!

Lack of natural predators or other dangerous/deadly animals and insects, no civil war, no weird dictators (thinking North Korea rather than some political statement), no volcanoes, tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis or other major natural disasters in this area to write home about. Not too hot, not too cold...

Feeling bloody lucky. Esp as I'm in glorious Cornwall :)

I feel the same. Having lived in Italy and Australia, I do feel I've something to compare it to.

Oz is beautiful but bloody hot and there are sensitive issues there which I don't want to live with. In Italy is is stunning but the working classes have a lot less than here.

Bowlersarm · 22/12/2013 23:31

I think you're right.

Lots of people in the uk love to moan though. They'll be along soon.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 22/12/2013 23:33

I feel the same.

Free healthcare and education.

Respect for women, respect for diversity, sexual freedom.

Beautiful cities, rich historic culture.

Ability to travel pretty much world wide (i.e lack of visa restrictions for many many places)

Salmotrutta · 22/12/2013 23:34

I agree wholeheartedly OP.

When I see tsunamis/earthquakes on the TV I often wonder what it must feel like to live with that threat constantly.

Not too fond of Spiky poisonous things either...

MyNameIsKenAdams · 22/12/2013 23:34

And before someone says we pay for nhs and schools, yadda yadda, I mean free to use, and we agree to forego a portion of our taxes to cover a vast array of services.

WilsonFrickett · 22/12/2013 23:36

I'm Scottish and was at a gig the other night where the singer said something that really made me think. Basically, we're going through our independence debate and while it may get heated at times, no-one will die. There will be no war. If the uk does split it will do so amicably. If it doesn't split, it will do so amicably. And actually, that's something to be very, very proud of. So YANBU.

Lemongrab · 22/12/2013 23:36

As soon as I read the thread title I thought, ooh, I wonder if it's Cornwall?! And of course you're in Cornwall, it's the best place ever (I'm in Cornwall too).

WooWooOwl · 22/12/2013 23:38

I completely agree. I feel very lucky to have had the good fortune to have been born in the UK.

BerlinerBelle · 22/12/2013 23:38

I love the UK too and am always grateful that I grew up here. It's stunning - it has the most amazing countryside locations, seaside locations, exciting cities, geography, history etc. The culture available is second to none. OK - so the weather isn't always sunny - I can live with that.

Lemongrab · 22/12/2013 23:40

And I completely agree with you too. We're very lucky to be in the UK. People who moan about life here really don't have anything truly terrible to moan about.

Allegrogirl · 22/12/2013 23:42

YANBU (Devon is quite nice too)

Hohohowhatfuckeryitis · 22/12/2013 23:44

Yes, it's ok isn't it? Free speech, medicine,no legal guns, tolerance enshrined in law. We may occasionally get a total toss pot in charge, but at least they won't become ruler for life. I've lived elsewhere too, and I'm happy to live here now.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 22/12/2013 23:45

I love the UK too. England generally and London specifically. I'm so grateful every day that DH and I chose London to settle down in and have our family. Best decision ever and I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Canada is a close second though. All the same re education, health care, gun control, abortion, moderate politics etc. Even the snow and cold weather is (mostly) ok. Only problem is Rob Ford Grin

TheNightIsDark · 22/12/2013 23:52

Rob Ford is quite hilarious though. I imagine not so much if you're Canadian but I look forward to seeing what he does next whilst wondering who the hell is telling him it's a good idea

meeeemo · 23/12/2013 00:13

yep cornwall here too. isnt it fab, would not ever live anywhere else!!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/12/2013 00:15

NightisDark - my parents still live in Toronto and they are in a pit of despair about the whole fiasco... but it is like watching a car crash from afar

BrianTheMole · 23/12/2013 00:26

Yes I agree op. As my brother puts it "its like being dealt the ace card in life!"

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/12/2013 00:27

I'm not drunk I promise Grin

Anyways.

All you Cornwall folks - I think Cornwall - apart from the tourists - is absolutely wonderful and you are so lucky!
