There might be cameras on the sorting room floor but there are none when they are out on their round

It is rare that a delivery office will have "temps" they use the perm staff and they do overtime they do however have short term temps 3 or 6 month contract which has every chance of getting renewed afterwards I work in a differnet town to where i live and delivery office doesnt have christmas temps they are 3 people short but no temps

Christmas temps are at the mail centres the one i worked at supplied 1 city and 3 large towns

Temporary staff are always a risk because they do not have the incentive of needing to keep the job as a reason not to be involved with anything dodgy

Temps do have the incentive to keep the job for as long as possible Royal mail has Aguard and RM temps which are year round zero hours contract Royal mail also uses a outside angency (which i worked for and dp still does) trust me when I say that in 2 weeks time people are calling every single day to get work Aguard and Rm temps just stare at there phone hoping for a call

You can have a big a hissy fit as you like
I feel cross you can judge a whole group of people that just want to work and in doing so hope to picked up for a contract or more temp work its simaler to people judging people on benfits and calling them lazy

but it doesn't change the fact that temporary staff are much, much more likely to be involved with theft or fraud

yet another view and judging whole section of society lots of people use referances by Royal mail managers when they get offered work myself working at Royal mail helped me get a full time job

Royal Mail are not managing the risk of having temporary staff effectively. You have to prove your ID for any job, and having a CRB only weeds out habitual criminals.

With ref to CRB check i worked with a young lad in the first year that worked as temp in the 2nd year i saw him shopping had a chat and asked if he was comming back to RM he said he got into a fight over the summer and was fined he failed the RM CRB check

not excatly a habitual criminal but you can have your view if you feel so strongly may i suggest that you pay for a PO BOX or get everyone to send everything via special delivery if it is cards/presents for birthdays that way if it goes missing you are insured but also special delivery is sorted in a locked room and no temps work in there

Smartiepants79 · 21/12/2013 21:51

I love my post lady she is fab.

Never had anything go missing myself.

Sweeping statements about an entire organisation that is made up of thousands of people is just silly.

SeaSickSal · 21/12/2013 22:34

stars I'm absolutely astounded by your arrogance. Royal Mail's customers shouldn't have to pay for Special Delivery or a PO Box in order not to have their mail stolen. The fact that you seem to see anybody who doesn't do that as fair game for theft is a pretty damning indictment of Royal Mail's staff.

When I send something via Royal Mail I shouldn't have to pay a premium to avoid theft. I should be secure in the knowledge that my post will not be stolen.

And temporary staff are a big risk. I work managing risk in my job and believe me it is a fact that temporary staff are a much higher risk. Of course there are some staff who are decent but when you're looking at temprary staff you are looking at people who have a much higher probablitlity of not having a dodgy work history. You tend to find that if people are good, reliable hard workers who come with a strong reference then they will not need to do a temp job for long, if at all.

Royal Mail are not managing the risk that this staff present properly. They seem to have the same attitude as you - which is that if you don't pay for a premium service you take pot luck whether your parcel arrives or not.

How would you feel if you were sent away from a hospital when you were ill or the police refused to come to your house when you were being robbed because you hadn't paid for the premium service?

Your attitude is a disgrace and shows exactly what is wrong with Royal Mail. This 'If it doesn't arrive and you haven't paid for special delivery then tough shit' attitude is exactly what is wrong with Royal Mail.

Anyway, now it is privatised I doubt that there will be many people with your attitude left in a few years.

starsandunicorns · 21/12/2013 22:56

And you are putting blame on temps who work hard and get called theives by the likes you wheni have even explained that temps are not in delivery offices I think you should conplain to to your personal delivery office not sprouting sweeping statements on a whole section of a workforce royal mail very rarly hire anyone after xmas because they royal mail after xmas because they use their in house angency you obivisly have not understood my answers to your sweeping statements

NadiaWadia · 22/12/2013 02:03

punctuation?

starsandunicorns · 22/12/2013 08:35

Hiding thread now as really you just keep blaming the lowly temps dont mid jan they will all be out of a job again

Saurus72 · 22/12/2013 09:16

I think they are the best option for home delivery.

daisychain01 · 22/12/2013 09:28

Our postie, and the one before him at our previous house, and the sorting offices we have used are all great people who take pride in their work.

Our current postie is almost like a security guard if we occasionally go away.

Yesterday he stood in the rain with a small parcel and handed it to us personally (plus the newspapers that were poking out of our outside mailbox). He is there rain or shine.

One of my oldest friends was a postie and he was dedicated to the job til the day he retired.

Yes I am sure you can always give examples of wrong doing, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

Our postie is great. But when he's away, our post often gets misdelivered by staff who don't seem to be able to understand that there is more than flat with the same number on our street due to blocks of flats. I often get mail for flats in other blocks, and they get ours. I've made formal complaints. It drives me crazy.

This thread is three years old.

JellyBelli · 09/11/2016 12:39

Its not the post office itself, its a small percentage of staff that are the problem.
We have 2 regular postmen and they are like Good Cop, Bad Cop. Good Cop is lovely, just does his job with no fuss.
Bad Cop postman made a huge fuss recently as a parcel had a different name on it to mine, and he accused me of having a second identity! I told him we take parcels for a friend who works nights and he huffed and puiffed about whether he should hand it over.

We have a small shop online. We've had about 10 incoming parcels go missing over the last 6 months, and we have to claim for 4 - 12 out of every 100 we post, depending on the time of year. Its worse over Xmas with the temps in.
We've had signed for stuff go missing. The worst was when we bought a batch of small manilla envelopes cheap, and nearly 20% of them went missing over Xmas as staff thought we were posting drugs. We printed a warning on the back of the envelopes and that cut down the theft rate slightly. Once customer was so hacked off they agreed for us to post them a glitter bomb Grin

destinywidow · 09/11/2016 12:40

My postie is lovely, but when he has a day off I know without even seeing the postie!

Last year my neighbour brought a parcel round that had been thrown over his fence the day before (it's a business and it wasn't there when he locked up at 5:30), the parcel was marked fragile and was soaking wet!

2 days later he brought round a cardboard envelope containing cards from funky pigeon, envelope was bent to fit in the post box and it said do not bend on it!
Most posties are great but there are the odd few who don't care.

FleurThomas · 09/11/2016 13:11

Amazon Logistics is the best
Then Royal Mail
Then the rest

I live in an area where all the major delivery have depots just half an hour away, yet AL and RM are the only ones to actually recognise this & use the information to speed up my deliveries.

pipsqueak25 · 09/11/2016 13:20

postie has signed for several parcels for me but never left them, rm says i must have had then as they were signed for -yeah, but not by me !!! can't claim so have lost out. ggrrrr!!!

Mynestisfullofempty · 09/11/2016 13:32

Had one occasion were someone sent £100 to us as a present through the rm, never got it. Was before Christmas one year.. so dishonest employee does exist, but the general rule is that they are good and we prefer them to others.

Jaynesworld · 09/11/2016 14:48

My postie is great, if I don't answer the first time he knocks he comes back to deliver my parcel after his round. My usual Hermes delivery driver is also great x

pluck · 09/11/2016 15:05

Even though this is a zombie thread, people are still standing up for the Royal Mail, three years later!

IreallyKNOWiamright · 09/11/2016 16:25

I've had a few issues. I'm going to have to send a card this week recorded delivery to trust it will get there this time. I've had letters delivered to my house which was not my address. So I dread to think what mail of mine has gone to that address
