...to think that shop managers should not swear at and threaten staff on shop floor?

Had a child-free couple of hours. Was driving past a large shop and thought I would drop in to wonder at the Christmas tat. It was deathly quiet - few customers. Behind me I suddenly heard the manager say to a young female employee "If I'm fucking going down I'll take all of you lot with me". To his surprise, I emerged from behind a display. I said to him "Excuse me - Unacceptable" and to her "that's bullying - you can report that". Then promptly left. Driving out of the car park she flags me down and makes excuses for him. Says he has a new, horrible area manager who is unimpressed with the shop presentation (not overly surprising), says SHE DESERVED IT as she had cocked up. Says he is a great manager really and please would I not report it. She says he has apologised to her. I say I AM going to report it because HE cocked up, by speaking to her on the shop floor and by his language. I say that she does not deserve that kind of behaviour which as women we seem to accept (she sounded like an abused wife). I relented and said I would speak to him if he come out. He did not. I drove off. Should I report it? I feel really unsettled. Maybe he is under a lot of pressure, will recognise he has crossed the line and will punish himself enough. Or maybe I am being complicit in the bullying?

Report it. She could have been threatened to flag you down and make you change your mind. If there is a big bastard area manager, then report both to head office. It's not good for staff morale or company reputation and this is the angle I would with head office - company reputation is all they care about.

Report him. Now., Without fail. The behaviour of that man was absolutely vile and uncalled for. I don't give a fig how much stress he was under. The poor employees, and that poor woman!

OP that's awful for the staff to be spoken to like that!

Name and shame the shop please ....

Absolutely report him. I'm guessing he made her come after you.

Thank you for all the advice, guys. I am going to report it - anonymously - on Monday. I think he was a nasty piece of work and do not want him knowing anything about me. TBH it had never crossed my mind that she had been sent out by him (naive or what), but it makes a lot of sense.

Report him. A friend of mine is being bullied at work at the moment and it's awful.

Please, please report it.
