To have nearly fainted at the price of Jo Malone candles

Thought I'd look at some stuff for my Mum's birthday and heard good stuff about the Jo Malone candles so just had a quick look on Amazon...

EIGHTY FUCKING QUID!!! For a candle. That you burn. I mean it could smell like unicorn farts and rainbows and eighty quid would be ridiculous! I am frankly stunned. Shock

Why though? What am I missing here? What else should I avoid for the sake of my blood pressure?

£260 for a lump of perfumed wax? Shock

I went in a Jo Malone shop recently. Hummed worse than Lush and that's saying something...

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 21/12/2013 15:21

I don't get scented candles. I have a clean house and electric lightbulbs. - that seems to cover it.

Nausea inducing fire hazards. I got given one by my boss this Christmas. It was instantly regifted.

Tondelay the are smells other than dirt or cleaning products you know.

Fannydabbydozey · 21/12/2013 16:01

Ambience tondelayo, ambience!

And I hate my house smelling of bloody cif.

Didn't you even want to try the gift? Just to see if it made your electric bulbs romantic?

Belize · 21/12/2013 16:48

Tondelayo, you sound very clinical, do you have bright overhead lights in your sitting room per chance??

Candles definitely lend a certain ambiance to any house, lovely soft lighting and smells beautiful to boot, what's not to like?

nomorecrumbs · 21/12/2013 16:49

I grew up in a house with fluorescent strip lights everywhere downstairs. I overcompensate now with candles and lamps and it makes me happy!

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 21/12/2013 18:02

You can get ambience with electric light - I have lots of lamps with soft bulbs, I have fairy lights, I have dimmer switches. I don't sit under fluorescent light and my house does not smell of cleaning products. I am very sensitive to smells and I tolerate very few artificial scents - I have really sensitive skin so almost everything is fragrance free.

The scent made me BOAK just unwrapping the tissue paper (am pregnant so my scent radar is worse than usual) It is a Mumsnet approved 'naice' brand by the way. Grin

Candles cause house fires and lots of them - about 2000 a year.

Plumpysoft · 22/12/2013 22:08

Fannydabbydozey - I have been making some too! Where did you get your Baies fragrance oil from? I have made lime, basil and mandarin, and honeysuckle and pomegranate noir

I've got a Melt candle for Christmas and I thought that was pricey at £20 but it burns for 80hrs apparently and us absolutely gorgeous. It is on my fireplace and the scent (Christmas so warm and spicy) has sort of diffused through the whole ground floor. It's not synthetic at all I did look at their website to find out about them as it's a new make to me but I will definitely be buying more. It's a million times better than the plug in freshener most if my friends favour, subtle but lovely.

Belize · 23/12/2013 14:09

Melt are wonderful. Their Noel candle is superb.

They are a nice company based in the West Country which appeals to me Smile. I don't work for them or know them personallly btw, just bought their candles for a long time now. Presentation is lovely too.

It's all to do with the quality of the ingredients burnt isn't it? Some cheaper synthetic ones probably give off nasty toxic fumes.

Quality every time for me.

OpalTourmaline · 23/12/2013 15:16

Yes, they probably give off mustard gas I would think. Grin Wink

alemci · 23/12/2013 15:25

I've got a small one that step mum didn't want. feel inspired. party lite are good and smell nice.

Fannydabbydozey · 25/12/2013 21:35

Ooh plummy where do you get your oils from? I got my baies one from gracefruit. Although they have increased the price by double since I ordered three weeks ago. Hmm

Burning my first ever candle making try. I used warm amber and frankincense. Not as good as my latter ones. I've learned and glad I didn't give them as presents. Not nearly enough oil. You really have to be upward o f 7% to make them smell lush.

neffi · 25/12/2013 22:18

I have been given a beautiful Jo Malone candle for Christmas from a lovely friend. It's an indulgence I couldn't afford myself but sometimes that's what the best gifts are. They are very good quality (if not necessarily good value) and burn very evenly so there's no waste.

I also know I have a diptyque candle coming from my mum because I bought it myself for her to give to me. Lucky lucky me.

DameDoom · 26/12/2013 12:38

What a lovely friend you have neffi. For me, candles have been a very slippery slope. Got into Yankees years ago ( still really like some of their smells) but before that I couldn't understand why anyone would pay for scented melty wax.
I am now obsessed with candles - candle shopping is my actual hobby Blush. I buy in bulk and spend far too much and admit to having a number of Jo Malone biggies. I'm not particular mind, I also love Cire Trudon, Diptyque, Miller Harris, Johnathan Ward and Molten Brown.

I don't go out to eat very often and barely drink so these are my treats and oh how I love them.

Has anyone tried Lily Flame or Bomb Cosmetics candles? Just been browsing online and they look nice.

Santabroughtmethis · 26/12/2013 19:28

I bought a candle 6 years ago from a shop in the galleries, Bristol. All I can remember was it was a soya wax candle and was from a ethical shop and I loved it never have found one as good since -£6.

I do like lily flame though.

mrspremise · 27/12/2013 16:32

My family are all fans of Yankee Candle's "Baby Powder"...

Darnley · 27/12/2013 17:55

I love the St Eval candles. Really lovely and a reasonable price. You can get them on Amazon or direct from their website. The Sandalwood is amazing.

Sallystyle · 27/12/2013 18:40

I love them!

I don't mind spending £40 on something I enjoy which last months.

I mean, how much does the average person spend on booze or takeaways every 3 months? probably over £40.

Sallystyle · 27/12/2013 18:48

I also love Yankee candles and I always have a tart burning.
