To have nearly fainted at the price of Jo Malone candles

MarjorieChardem · 20/12/2013 14:19

Thought I'd look at some stuff for my Mum's birthday and heard good stuff about the Jo Malone candles so just had a quick look on Amazon...

EIGHTY FUCKING QUID!!! For a candle. That you burn. I mean it could smell like unicorn farts and rainbows and eighty quid would be ridiculous! I am frankly stunned. Shock

Why though? What am I missing here? What else should I avoid for the sake of my blood pressure?

Think that seller's asking the earth - you can get them on the official site for £39, but even that makes me wince. For £40 I want something I can eat (copiously), wear or live off - not set light to. Occasionally indulge in a Yankee candle which is bad enough but at least you can get a massive one of them and bus fare for under £20.

I think you are my new fave mnetter

Marjorie- Try ebay.

weddingballsup · 20/12/2013 14:38

Or you could get both of these these? Grin

weddingballsup · 20/12/2013 14:38

Thankyou Tiredemma Blush - have never been anyone's favourite mn'er!

UsedToBeNDP · 20/12/2013 14:41

Was going to say that they are spenny but a small one is about £40.

UsedToBeNDP · 20/12/2013 14:41

(Which is still nuts for a candle and I'll pay through the nose for most things!)

PeterParkerSays · 20/12/2013 14:42

Have a look in TKMaxx. They have loads of candles at present, some smell grim but there are some really nice ones.

catgirl1976 · 20/12/2013 14:44

£260 for a candle Shock

UsedToBeNDP · 20/12/2013 14:44

eBay is rife for fake Jo Malone stuff so I'd avoid, personally.

SantanaLopez · 20/12/2013 14:45
Shock

Bloody hell.

TooTabooHasBigShinyBaubles · 20/12/2013 14:45

THat link is £260.

Emperor's new clothes.

I'm appalled that there are people who would pay so much for a lump of scented wax.

Jo Malone must be pissing herself laughing at the stupidity of her customers Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 20/12/2013 14:49

But, but, but... the £260 one comes in large glass 'jar' that you can use for putting er.... stuff in after you've burned the candle.

I'm passionate about 'Lime Basil and Mandarin' but I think that the candles aren't as good value as the cologne sprays, which are significantly cheaper.

EBay's a good place for buying sprays that people have bought/tried/not liked. After Christmas is a good time.

weddingballsup · 20/12/2013 14:50

I had a look at the reviews too - one person said "The price is quite high but if you shut the doors they can give you quite a buzz", surely if you're after a buzz even crack is cheaper than that! (not that I know the current market value of drugs)

FiveStarHadItComing · 20/12/2013 14:51

I second TKMaxx. Have had some excellent candles from there, smell wonderful, long lasting, v good quality.

SinisterSal · 20/12/2013 14:52

God. for a candle!

there is an epic thread in Arts and Crafts about a MNer who makes her own with essential oils they are infinity cheaper and smell great, if anyone fancies emulating that.

weddingballsup · 20/12/2013 14:53

You get a nicer jar leftover with a Yankee candle, although I still only have the stupidity desire to spend the best part of £20 on a candle every couple of years.

gobbynorthernbird · 20/12/2013 17:19

Yankee candles are grim. TK Maxx has Miller Harris in at the moment, or the Bahoma ones from there are quite nice.
As for JM taking the piss, I don't think it's excessive, but it totally depends on how much spare cash you have.

Madmammy83 · 20/12/2013 18:13

I love yankee candles, I don't know why they get such a bad rap. Personally for £260 the candle would want to be able to cook my dinner and clean my house. Fucking ridiculous. Marie Reynolds London ones are lovely.

KenAdams · 20/12/2013 18:17

Yankee Candles aren't grim.

Wilding · 20/12/2013 18:20

Candlewick Greens do Jo Malone-alike candles for much cheaper. They do versions of all the Jo Malone scents although I'm not sure how close they are to the real thing.

TheBookofRuth · 20/12/2013 18:22

I have plenty of money but still baulk at spending that much on a candle, even though I love Jo Malone fragrances. Some things just really aren't worth the money.

SinisterSal · 20/12/2013 18:33

What's wrong with Yankee?

Some scents are lovely - the Vanilla and Lime one, for example - and they do last. i don't get any synthetic note from them either.

thegreylady · 20/12/2013 18:37

I was given my only ever Jo Malone candle last year-it was the £39 one [Pomegranate Noir] and I was so touched that I cried. It was from my niece [cousin's dd actually] and it was such a lovely thing to give me.

ENormaSnob · 20/12/2013 18:38

Im happy with a glade one tbh Grin
