To have nearly fainted at the price of Jo Malone candles

Thought I'd look at some stuff for my Mum's birthday and heard good stuff about the Jo Malone candles so just had a quick look on Amazon...

EIGHTY FUCKING QUID!!! For a candle. That you burn. I mean it could smell like unicorn farts and rainbows and eighty quid would be ridiculous! I am frankly stunned. Shock

Why though? What am I missing here? What else should I avoid for the sake of my blood pressure?

I agree with herethereandeverywhere.

I can make a 4 wick candle last almost a year. I only burn them for about 2 hours at a time.

herethereandeverywhere · 20/12/2013 20:56

Smell is so personal isn't it? I've personally never smelt an essential oil that didn't smell of a) disinfectant or b) olbas oil Grin

herethereandeverywhere · 20/12/2013 21:00

So jealous Krabby! I've never forked out for a 4 wick one - always worried I'll get bored of the same smell for so long - silly as I haven't got bored of any yet - although I don't love Pomegranite noir like I used to.

SecretLimonadeDrinker · 20/12/2013 21:01

My lovely friend has quite a few of them, smell gorgeous but I couldn't justify it personally.

beachyhead · 20/12/2013 21:01

FACT: the Zara Home ones are the best... £19.99 each for a large three wick candle that makes the whole house smell fantastic. They are my working at home day special treat and all visitors comment on them....

UseHerName · 20/12/2013 21:03

for every body candles are 6 quid in tk maxx and smell great.they are soy and sooo much better than yankees

usualsuspect · 20/12/2013 21:05

You are paying for the poncey name, not the candle.

SeaSickSal · 20/12/2013 21:08

It is nuts. A supplier at my old work used to send them for Xmas. We had a policy that you had to donate gifts over a certain value to charity. I got given a Jo Malone candle and had no idea they cost so much and I had to give it up.

It's a sad fucking indictment of the world we live in that some people can spend enough money to feed hundreds of children in a candle. It really is just saying 'Look at me, I'm so rich I can spend £80 quid on something completely pointless.

usualsuspect · 20/12/2013 21:12

It is very look at me.

It's a bit sad when candles are used as status symbols.

scottishmummy · 20/12/2013 21:14

I buy tk maxx or ones from next, was once bought a diptyque nice but v pricy

MissRabbitsOtherJob · 20/12/2013 21:14

If someone wants to spend their money on an expensive candle so what?

It creates jobs, generates tax, doesn't harm anyone. Who cares.

ExcuseTypos · 20/12/2013 21:15

Jo Malone candles are lovely. They last for ages and smell beautiful.

MyNameIsKenAdams · 20/12/2013 21:16

Candles only smell when you blow them out.

C`mon, admit it.

ExcuseTypos · 20/12/2013 21:17

So no one who buys a Jo Malone candle gives to charity then SeaSick. Think you may be a bit wrong there.

I can afford them and I give a lot to charity. What's the problem?

KrabbyPatty · 20/12/2013 21:17

Unless you're into candles, people don't know that they're expensive.

I would never consider a candle a status symbol! I just like the smell.

So buy one a glade one then.

They smell just as nice.

KrabbyPatty · 20/12/2013 21:20

Glade Grin

There's one in the loo at work. It does not smell nice.

ExcuseTypos · 20/12/2013 21:20

No, they really don't Usual.

Glade anything make my eyes itch.

usualsuspect · 20/12/2013 21:21

They don't look quite so poncey on the sideboard,I will give you that.

gobbynorthernbird · 20/12/2013 21:24

Yankee are to candles what Impulse is to perfume. They are vile and cheap and synthetic. Jo Malone, Miller Harris, Diptyque, etc are gorgeous and actually much better value.

scottishmummy · 20/12/2013 21:26

Oh I love miller Harris products her candles are lush

usualsuspect · 20/12/2013 21:26

Candle snobbery,only on MN.

SinisterSal · 20/12/2013 21:28

I don't get the synthetic vibe from Yankee at all.

Sometimes I put a dab of Lenor on a cotton ball and tuck it behind the radiator. Which is not any kind of aspirational at all Xmas Grin
