So it turns out, I WAS being unreasonable. The man flu was something worse!

My ex was getting right on my boobs with dramatic sighing, forehead feeling, gland clutching (his neck) and so, so much more but I cant say because it turns out I was wrong.

I said it was a virus stop being a wuss!!

He had a blood test, turns out his liver isnt functioning properly. Thats all I know, thats the words he used so not sure what to take from it. He has more blood tests on Monday and a scan soon.

Obviously, despite him being an ex Im worried about him. I have no idea what causes this, he is T-total!! Drinks about one beer a year, if that in fact.

And a very, very selfish part of me (I KNOW its selfish, thats why Im getting it out here so I dont in RL) is wondering how Im going to deal with the drama (assuming it doesnt turn out to be something serious - fingers firmly crossed!). Since he had the results he seems to have got significantly worse, the second he had ghe phone call 'I am very weak' etc etc Im gritting my teeth, I promised him Id be supportive and understanding but I dread him milking this. Of course, again assuming it doesnt turn out to be something serious. Confused

Does anyone have any experience of a liver that isnt functioning?

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 19/12/2013 19:29

Don't be so hard on yourself, How was you to know it wasn't man flu.

thebody · 19/12/2013 19:32

Let's hope he's ok op. You weren't to know.

NomNomNom · 19/12/2013 19:35

His liver might be fine. I think what happened is that his liver function test brought up an unexpected result. That can mean anything. For example, when I had glandular fever, my liver function was reduced (or whatever, it was a while ago). I have been 100% fine in the liver department since then.

So don't worry, sounds as if he's still over-dramatising things!

NomNomNom · 19/12/2013 19:36

Ps: if his liver wasn't functioning, he'd be yellow. And in a hospital.

CharlieAlphaKiloEcho · 19/12/2013 19:38

My brother had pretty much the same symptoms and his was a virus. He was admitted for a couple of days and felt rough for a week or so but further tests showed his liver was back to normal in a few weeks.

Igloofornow · 19/12/2013 19:41

This isn't unusual, it would be possible to say without seeing results/patient history. Plenty people have abnormal LFT results - there are loads of other markers available to check.

I pretty much did the exact same to DH next year, he had man flu which was actually pneumonia bloods showed abnormal liver function, repeat bloods and scan were fine.

blondiep14 · 19/12/2013 19:42

BIL had similar (symptoms, and dramatics!) turned out he needed his gall bladder removed!

Butterytoast · 19/12/2013 19:42

It could just be something like glandular fever..

Knit2togtbl · 19/12/2013 19:46

The liver has the ability to heal really quickly so he may get over it soon. The follow up bloods will give a better idea.

Punkatheart · 19/12/2013 19:53

Sometimes, the test can be false. It happened to me and the sample has presumably been spoilt.

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/12/2013 20:09

I have the Hep C virus, I felt fine and it was only by chance they found out by blood tests.
Is that possible?

AlaskaNebraska · 19/12/2013 20:10

oh god - it isnt linked to glandular fever is it? i had that once and terrible liver. i went as yella as marge simpson

CinnamonPorridge · 19/12/2013 20:20

The liver function test result can be bad because of his virus.

I had a horrible result after I had a nasty virus (I'm convinced it was swine flu) and the test was repeated after 6 weeks and was fine.

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 19/12/2013 20:20

The poor bugger was looking yellow on Saturday. I remember looking at him and thinking his skin looked yellow. Thats not good is it?

Then, the next day he said he felt better and he looked significantly better, the yellow had gone. He still looked rough but not the yellow tinge that he had.

He stood on a nail about a week before this all kicked off, it got red and swollen so I gave him some antibiotics from my cupboard that were left over from my mastitis and it cleared it up.

He was worried about hepatitis which is why they tested, but apart from liver function issues all the rest are clear.

Plus, Im pretty sure they would have given him Hep vaccines before he went into the army or before he went travelling?

Thanks for the reasurrance.

You gave him left over antibiotics?! Confused

justtoomessy · 19/12/2013 20:27

Does he drink lots? Alcohol that is? Deranged LFT's and being yellow can be a sign of liver disease bought on by alcohol of hep

Knit2togtbl · 19/12/2013 20:31

Some antibiotics can affect the liver I think

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/12/2013 20:31

I had the Hep C virus for 25 years OP, I had treatment but it didn't work but many people go through out life without knowing they have it.

BrownSauceSandwich · 19/12/2013 20:33

I, briefly, had impaired liver function on a few occasions due to gallstones. it was pretty ghastly at the time (jaundice, wee like treacle, and virusy symptoms in addition to all the other gallstones shit) but fortunately fully recovered each time. Actually, that's what brought about the gallstones diagnosis... I expect that'll be one of the things they'll check out with your ex. Wouldn't be a bad result, actually, as gallstones are usually very treatable.

FudgefaceMcZ · 19/12/2013 20:35

FGS don't encourage people to self-medicate on leftover antibiotics you big numpty. Has he told the doctor he did this? It may be a side effect, or a reaction to them (not to mention that you had no idea if they were the right kind for the infection which you home-diagnosed him with, assuming you didn't take a swab and culture it, and you're just allowing resistant bacteria to develop by doing this).

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 19/12/2013 20:35

He never drinks. As I said in the OP I see him drink about one beer a year, and even then I bet theres been 12 months between them sometimes.

Yes, I gave him amoxicillin from my cupboard. They were about 4 weeks old and they worked brilliantly.

Lady that is interesting, he has tattoos all over him and not all from reputable places, and he was covered in piercings when I first met him.

I do wonder if it was a really bad virus that has done this. I effing hope so.

OP posts:
OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 19/12/2013 20:37

My mum used to do this, I didnt think it was a big deal. I know he has had amoxicillin before, many times over the years. Its a generic antibiotic and not a strong dose so I cant really see the problem?

OP posts:
OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 19/12/2013 20:37

Plus, I passed them to him. I didnt crush them up and hide them in his coffee......

I did this once with my DH, got totally fed up of all the dramatic sighing and weak and feeble voices. Assumed it was man flu - turns out to be the onset of diabetes, with a blood sugar level so high he was in hospital, on a drip, for a week.

Oops! He's fine now. Well, still diabetic, but functioning mostly normally!
