Bloody Grandma/Nan/Nanny Christmas Cards

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 16:18

Where is the Gran and Granny ones? Every year I have this battle.

Why oh why do they not sell any anymore? On the rare occasion I actually do find one it's always really pretty horrible or quite obvious it's mean to be from a child (which is fine when buying from DD but not when it's from me).

Anyone know if there is a shop hidden away anywhere which sells them?

Get a personalised card. Sorted. Loads of places do them now, marks and spencer online, moo pig etc.

farewellfigure · 19/12/2013 16:43

Right i'm heading towards Moonpig. Poor Granny Sad

jigsawlady · 19/12/2013 16:43

M&S have a few. They have gran, grandma, granny, nan etc

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 16:44

RenterNomad I don't think there is anything wrong with them just not what I wan to give my close family to be honest. I like all my family to have their specific cards.

Thanks jigsawlady will have a look. If all else fails back to moonpig.

I wouldnt spend the extra to get a specific card - mine get a bog standard card from a pack. Leaves more money for presents

Heartbrokenmum73 · 19/12/2013 16:47

There's nothing wrong with a non-specific card, but some of us like to send/receive specific cards - what's wrong with that? We're not hurting anyone?

Disclaimer - no animals were harmed in the making of specific cards!

snowed · 19/12/2013 16:47

Get the card and glue out and make your own?

magentastardust · 19/12/2013 16:49

They are still there -they just go quick! I work in a gift shop part time and we had loads of Gran and Granny, nan, nanna, nanny, pops, Papa etc cards -Also to my grandaughter and partner, my mother and partner, my great auntie twice removed and her goldfish -you get the idea.
They have been out on the shelves since October so for the last few days we have had angry customers asking why we don't have them anymore-they still make them I promise they just are the first to go. (I put away my nanna ones end of Sep!)

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/12/2013 16:49

I'm sure I've seen a Great-Nan one somewhere! I needed one Nannie & two different Nan cards. I found them eventually, but had no choice of designs & had to settle for a Nanna rather than a Nannie.

Nannie (MIL) is quite an easy going sort and wouldn't mind whether she had personalised cards, folded pieces of paper with scribbles on or 'Poundland specials' (from a box of 100 from Poundland). She is, however, the last living grandparent my DCs have (they are 16, 12 & 2) and they like to give the specific cards. Well, the older two do - I doubt DD has an opinion on the matter yet Xmas Grin.

Caitlin17 · 19/12/2013 16:50

The personalised ones are always so tacky. There are millions of beautiful cards available. I really would not appreciate getting a card to "Mum" or "Aunty" . It requires less thought than getting a blank card of something I'd like.

And if I ever become a grandmother, " nanny" is the lovely lady I employed so I would be very surprised to get one referring to me as " nanny"

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 16:51

Hearbrokenmum73 Haha, I didn't think there were so many who actually disagreed with specific cards...

Abra1d · 19/12/2013 16:51

Those personalised ones are always awful. I would never buy one of them. Agree about Moonpig being better.

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 19/12/2013 16:52

Name cards drive me nuts - instead of a hundred cards to choose from in a shop, I'm restricted to the six with the right relationship on them. And since my dad likes neither golf, football nor beer Hmm I get completely stuck.

Is it a northern thing? It wasn't like this when I lived down south.

MrsMook · 19/12/2013 16:53

Granny's got a blank card making its way towards her now. Being Christmas stock, the birthday selection is poor, and anything on the grandma theme was so... pink. Not her style!

I was looking for a brother from baby to toddler, and failed. They all assumed an adult relationship.

I also struggle with "uncle". They seem to assume that "uncle" is by default aging, and likes water colour scenes of boats/ golf... and not a teenager.

My family loves to defy card company cliches.

Methe · 19/12/2013 16:54

My family get generic cards.

What pisses me off if receiving a to M o m card from my 4 year old that the school have done.

I am not a Mom and I can't stand it! I am their Mum.

And apparently my husband and sons father has been erased from history as no mention of Dad on the card Hmm

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 16:56

Caitlin17 Lucky you aren't on my Christmas list Wink

It's your opinion they are tacky, I have found some quite beautiful one's and I don't think it requires less thought at all. I think you just need to read this thread to see how many people trail round shops looking for the right card, thoughtless??

As for your comment about what some children call their Grandparents it actually comes across as a bit childish. Don't like the thread then feel free to not post. Have a lovely Christmas, I hope it is filled with personal cards.

The personalised ones are always so tacky

In your opinion. What's wrong with some of us liking them?

My Mum likes cards with Nanny on them. And?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 19/12/2013 16:58

Oh and my Mum called her grandmother 'Nanny' - it's a personal choice, but thanks for your lovely comments.

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 16:59

I don't think they are all tacky. However do you know what I like a bit of tack now and again lol.

OP posts:
magentastardust · 19/12/2013 16:59

We also sell 'to the dog/cat' and 'from the dog/cat' -they fly off the shelves!
For the people saying they are tacky-fair doo's but they certainly sell a heck of a lot and although I wouldnt particularly want a Mum card by mum really likes getting a nanna card from the children!

Completely agree on male cards-fishing, golfing, beer , football -I struggle with picking ones for my male relatives every year.
Boys cards are worse -They go from Animals and bob the builder to little boys playing football then to beer glasses-trying to get Ds's friends bday cards for 9/10/11 yr olds is very tricky.

HesterShaw · 19/12/2013 17:01

Heartbroken, apparently "Nanny" is common. It's what naice people call a staff member Wink

MissWinter01 · 19/12/2013 17:02

magentastardust Are you joking? People buy their pet's Christmas cards?

OP posts:
Heartbrokenmum73 · 19/12/2013 17:02

I occasionally buy my Mum a 'from the cat' card for her birthday/Christmas because her cat came to live with us - it's a standing joke between us.

Maybe I should stop that because it seems to cause cats bum faces in some sourpusses.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 19/12/2013 17:03

Hester

Oh, that would be my problem then. I don't have staff or employees.

What is to become of me?
