I bought three boxes of Thorntons Chocolate. I should have realized it was old stuff they needed dumping when it was half price.

The boxes look terrible. Scrunched and marked, and bulging in areas, so it is obvious they have been shaken so the chocolates are out of their "holes" and in one place. One of them are missing sellotape on one side. The other looks like black marker has been drawn across, and one have obvious marks of price tags that has been ripped off so the paper has come off the box where the price tags were. £18 worth of chocolate, they were supposed to be gifts. Sad

I cant give chocolate that looks like this as a present. And especially not when the USE BY DATE IS 31/12/2013 - 7 days after Christmas eve!

Angry

So I rang customer services. Did they refund me? Did the fuck.

I have to bring the boxes to my nearest Tesco store (which is 20 minutes drive away) so that the store manager can see if I have cause for complaint. Hmm I told the lad on the phone, I had trusted them, I would never in a million years chosen boxes of chocolate as presents that

  1. Had such short use by date
  2. Looked like they had been played football with

Shite. Tesco.

I did not realize at the time. He carried the trays in and started helping me unload, he put the boxes aside on the table, the nice different box on top, and I did not realize until after he had gone!

I'm shocked they give you time to go through your items amandine. I pile the bags in as fast as I can and they've gone before I check everything (bar the water because they often damage that).

Beastofburden · 13/12/2013 21:15

I got rid of tesco when their under maintained vans broke down and they cancelled a whole delivery twice running. Ocado never piss you around. And I don't get substitutions because you book the slot before you do the shop, so if its out of stock, they tell you, and you make your own subs.

Ocado let you book your own refunds online and just put the money back in your account. It happens if I get a broken egg, they give me the whole box free.

woodchuck · 13/12/2013 21:15

Its always worth sending a complaint tweet with a photo. It is obv in the public domain and retailers like to look like they are dealing with complaints fairly and quickly

watfordmummy · 13/12/2013 21:16

When I get my shopping delivered (from tesco) and if something is wrong I just send it back with the driver! He scans the money comes off and it's done, unsure why your driver didn't do that ??Smile

AmandinePoulain · 13/12/2013 21:16

I order bagless (in wales we get charged for bags) so unpack whilst he waits. It doesn't take that long Confused

FeisMom · 13/12/2013 21:16

Quint can you put a complaint on their facebook page or tweet - social media seems to get them to respond pretty sharpish as they don't like the bad PR

hiddenhome · 13/12/2013 21:16

Bought grapes from Tesco this evening. Like little gnarly lumps of shite they are Hmm

Stick to Aldi.

Beastofburden · 13/12/2013 21:17

And with Ocado you don't have to check it there and then, you have 24 hours I think to report damaged or missing things (sounding like an advert now, but would like Ocado not to go bust cos then what will i do??? )

Mintyy · 13/12/2013 21:18

Hmmm. But they were half price ... ??? just saying.

MissYamabuki · 13/12/2013 21:19

Same here Apple, we use them regularly and are very happy - the drivers are always polite. You can reject short-dated items (they flag them for you) or poor substitutions on the spot, no questions asked, immediate refund. Same thing if you notice something afterwards - quick call, immediate refund, staff always polite and helpful.
Try again OP, they shouldn't really reject a refund on your word. Good luck Smile

Beastofburden · 13/12/2013 21:20

Minty, half price or not, they must be of merchantable quality,ie, not crap. Unless they are advertised as cheap chox in damaged packaging.

QuintessentialShadows · 13/12/2013 21:21

Mintyy, lots of shops do half price chocs. Waitrose, M&S, and dates are good and boxes look perfect. Why would I think Tesco would be different?

Oh, yeah, Hang on. Of course they would.

Like I said, I did not see the boxes properly because the driver put them aside on the kitchen table.

Yours sound nicer than mine amandine. They went through a phase of practically forcing the shopping into my arms, they are that desperate to get to the next delivery Grin

MillyStar · 13/12/2013 21:24

Is it the big red boxes of thorntons for £6?

I bought ones for fil on sun and had to root for one where all the Chocs weren't dislodged from their holes!

I can't check sell by date as I've already wrapped them to stop me eating them

PiratePanda · 13/12/2013 21:25

We've recently discovered that getting an organic fruit and veg box is, weirdly, cheaper than buying from Tesco, because it stays fresh until you want it so there's absolutely no waste.

QuintessentialShadows · 13/12/2013 21:25

They were red on the pictures online. In reality they are yellow and summery. Hmm

HeffalumpTheFlump · 13/12/2013 21:31

I'm quite happy with my tesco's delivery as I buy mostly their value range which works out cheaper than other shops for us. However the delivery has been late a couple of times and one of the drivers explained why. They have been double booking the drivers to get more money, but obviously the poor drivers can't be in two places at once so end up late. The poor bloke was so apologetic, and explained that a lot of customers had been having a right go at him for it. Not fair really.

Tapiocapearl · 13/12/2013 21:34

I've always found tescos crap.

QuintessentialShadows · 13/12/2013 21:37

I have been unhappy with Tesco for some time, just not unhappy enough to stop using them completely. Until now.

SwirlingStorm · 13/12/2013 21:41

I have fabulous Tesco deliveries where I live (south east). Lovely fresh food with long dates, friendly drivers, never late, bagless deliveries, quick refund if any issues.

I agree with the PPs who have said it must depend on area. Our stuff comes from a 'dark store' (only for internet orders and not open to the public) which I think makes a big difference. I used to get a fair stash of dodgy stuff when it came from a store. Dark stores are the way to go!

Plus we've been to Legoland 3 times for free with Clubcard points! Could never have afforded to go even once otherwise :)

QuintessentialShadows · 13/12/2013 21:43

Lucky you.

OP posts:
AmandinePoulain · 13/12/2013 21:43

Our drivers are generally lovely, he was chatty tonight and helped me unpack. Plus with all the free nappies I got (plus oddly they doubled up on my other subs too Grin) I can't complain. Maybe I'm just lucky? A friend of mine who lives close by but must be on the other side of some sort of border has her deliveries from a different store and has more problems with her deliveries than I do.

Sainsburys deliveries around here are awful however, and we're not posh enough to live in an Ocado area so it's a good job really!

TidyDancer · 13/12/2013 21:50

I have to say, we've always been pleased with tesco deliveries here (south east). Drivers are very polite and if there are subs, they are sensible ones. Decent dates on food and nothing damaged.

Asda have been problematic, a couple of cancelled deliveries etc, but always polite.

There will always be incidences of bad customer service, but you can get that with any company, even ocado and waitrose are capable of fucking up!

QuintessentialShadows · 13/12/2013 21:51

I cant fault the drivers. They are always nice and polite, friendly and cheerful. It is the food that is the problem!
