AIBU to wonder why on earth MILs ( DMs too) want to spend days on end intruding where they are not wanted over Christmas. Can understand wanting to see son or daughter and DGC over Christmas but WHY is it the end of the world if they want to go elsewhere? Can't they watch TV or read books? Have they no friends? A Gran talking here.

I think how you deal with Christmas is simply going to depend on the kind of family you have.

A lonely person, who would be happy to join in, is likely to be welcomed, but those who try to dictate the plans of others, or who can be badly behaved are simply going to find people not feeling welcoming at all.

I'm having my parents coming to me. Once my DCs are older, have families of their own, etc, I'll be happy to sort out new plans with them, and won't be upset if they choose to do something different, or to share their time with their partner's families.

Maybe I'll get that skiing holiday yet (not that I can ski, although I did have a school trip many years ago Grin )

I'm lucky that both my dps and dpils will fit in with whatever we decide! This year, with a 21mo and 3mo we have decided to stay at home but said anyone is welcome. All grandparents coming, no sit down meal just a huge buffet, all done by dh so I get to relax for a change!
