He's done the coving in matt white (may be eggshell possibly), the dado rail, architraves and skirting in gloss paint.

It just looks wrong to me. Shouldn't it all match. He's home in half an hour hence placing it here. We were going to move all the furniture back in that room as kids want their xmas tree up.

Does anyone else have a matt coving and shiney skirting. I'm sure it should match ... well, mostly sure

No, it doesn't have to match.

Shakirasma · 13/12/2013 17:04

Nooo YABU, coving should be matt, just like the ceiling.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 13/12/2013 17:04

I have never seen coving done in gloss! Always do it the with the same white we paint the ceiling. Honestly gloss coving will look awful!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/12/2013 17:05

Agree. Coving should match the ceiling especially if you live in the 80s.

1gglePiggle · 13/12/2013 17:05

Sounds like its right to me. Wish my dp would do some painting!

Joysmum · 13/12/2013 17:05

Coving should match the walls and ceiling. Woodwork should match other woodwork.

formerbabe · 13/12/2013 17:05

Sounds like he has done it right....all my coving is matt

nemno · 13/12/2013 17:06

Someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly. In the meantime I seem to recall that what you describe was the traditional accepted way. I can't imagine coving being shiny but all other woodwork was certainly gloss. I think now gloss on woodwork is less common than satinwood or eggshell.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 13/12/2013 17:06

Just for kicks please ask him to redo it in gloss when he comes home Grin

Finola1step · 13/12/2013 17:06

I would prefer it to match, using a silk finish rather than a gloss or matt. But then I do the decorating. If my husband complained about my decorating skills, he would be told in no uncertain terms to do the job himself or keep schtum.

nemno · 13/12/2013 17:07

I took too long typing that. :)

valiumredhead · 13/12/2013 17:07

Coving should be matte.

Finola1step · 13/12/2013 17:10

However I don't have coving. So what do I know?

So, what are you going to do?

Floggingmolly · 13/12/2013 17:13

Gloss paint is crap anywhere...

Ifcatshadthumbs · 13/12/2013 17:16

I love the look of satinwood but always found it a pig to keep clean

YANBU to want the woodwork to match but unless you have an ailment which means ypu cant do it, YABU to ask your dh to do it. He has done it. If you want it done differently, dp it yourself.

BohemianGirl · 13/12/2013 18:40

I have to say - do it yourself.

RedLondonBus · 13/12/2013 18:41

Never heard of gloss coving. I'd say Matt too.... I work at B&Q so get asked quite a bit!

Idespair · 13/12/2013 18:43

Coving is matt.

RemoteControlGeekToyOfTheYear · 13/12/2013 18:49

I have gloss coving in our bedroom (thank you, previous owners!) and it looks bloody awful. Def go for matt every time. It's not like you have to wipe fingerprints off it :)

Dawndonnaagain · 13/12/2013 18:50

Never seen gloss coving, you'd hate it if you got him to do it.

BoneyBackJefferson · 13/12/2013 18:56

Do it yourself.

pimplywrinkle · 13/12/2013 18:59

Have been persuaded by matt coving by you all. Thank-you.

For those of you who suggested I do it myself... Well, this is the only thing he does. I do everything else... which is a different post.
