to be grumpy about sandwiches AGAIN!!

Dd1 is in year 1. We got asked to make sandwiches for the class party last year - as opposed to the packet of Jaffa cakes or biscuit option. Oh well I thought - could be worse, could be the fruit kebabs!!

Letter in book bag today - sandwiches again! Can only assume they start at the top of the register and work down - meaning I will get sandwiches every bloody year! Worse than that - have two younger DC so when all three at the school that will be 3 plates of sandwiches rather than 3 packets of Jaffa cakes!

Should I say something or just stay grateful that it's not fruit kebabs?!!

Just don't make loads. Make about 4/6 slices worth, cut into quarters. There's always loads of them left over anyway so don't go making a load of work for yourself.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 12/12/2013 17:53

I am surprised you are allowed to make them.

DS school is not, DD school asks for 'donations'

BrownSauceSandwich · 12/12/2013 17:55

At least it's not hamwidges.

Shesaysso · 12/12/2013 17:59

Haha me too - I always thought it was bad luck that both children always came home with 'sandwiches' rather than 'pack of sausage rolls' - our surname is really near the beginning of the alphabet so I think you might be right. I just thought it was bad luck or I looked like the mug that would happily do them!

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 12/12/2013 18:02

Tbh if I did have to do it, I would go to sainsbury or costco and get a sandwich platter. < lazy emotion>

Ragwort · 12/12/2013 18:04

At least your children will get a selection of food - I did a childrens' party last weekend at Church and asked for donations - every child bought sausage rolls Grin not even nice home-made ones.

RiojaHaze · 12/12/2013 18:10

They do boxes of frozen sandwich platters in Iceland for about a fiver. Probably minging but then how many kids actually bother eating sandwiches at a Christmas party when there are party rings and wotsits on offer instead!

underachievingmum · 12/12/2013 18:28

Good tips but think I will get DH to make them - his surname his problem!

Brownsaucesandwich - what on earth are hamwidges??

brownsaucesandwich Grin hamwidge! I loved that thread.

Chippednailvarnish · 12/12/2013 18:32

Frozen sandwiches!?!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/12/2013 18:33

I've got "jam sandwiches" for boy 1. Easy enough.

Then "squash" for boy 2. I'm assuming they mean send in a bottle, rather than diluted and in cups!

Somebody has got "cubes of cheese, but not on cocktail sticks". How can you do cubes of cheese without cocktail sticks? What sort of madness is that?

worriedabout · 12/12/2013 18:38

Frozen sandwiches sound very weird. I would just do the easiest sandwich filling possible - cream cheese anyone. Kids are only interested in eating rubbish at parties anyway.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 12/12/2013 18:38

I am guilty of loving these when I need junk food.

Chippednailvarnish · 12/12/2013 18:39

I'm not sure if frozen sandwiches are genius or ridiculous!

RiojaHaze · 12/12/2013 18:43

DPs DM used to make him and his siblings their packed lunch sandwiches with frozen bread in the morning so by lunch it had defrosted enough to eat.
He doesn't have fond memories of school lunch times Wink

Daddypigsgusset · 12/12/2013 19:34

We are at the very end of the alphabet and we have paper plates and crisp. 6 flamin quid for 32 santa plates! I bought plain white value ones Xmas Blush and pombears

Daddypigsgusset · 12/12/2013 19:36

And I'm not being funny but I hope nobody's preparing food for it. There's some right scummers in the playground, the very thought

steff13 · 12/12/2013 19:44

Then "squash" for boy 2. I'm assuming they mean send in a bottle, rather than diluted and in cups!

They sell squash in bottles? And it's a beverage?

I've struck lucky this year....crisps or breadsticks!

enderwoman · 12/12/2013 20:33

We are near the end (T) and I have chocolate fingers and crisps. Actually I've had crisps for 4 years in a row.

onepieceoflollipop · 12/12/2013 20:36

steff13, are you in the UK? squash here is a cordial type fruit based drink that is diluted with water. Squash as in vegetable is usually known as butternut squash. :)

steff13 · 12/12/2013 20:44

No, I'm in the US. I know of many types of squash, but they're all vegetables. Or, fruits, technically. I have two acorn squash in the oven as we speak! :)

A fruit drink makes sense. I thought it was weird to take squash to a kids' party; it's like pulling teeth to get my kids to eat it at home. :)

olibeansmummy · 12/12/2013 21:06

Awww crap I hope they don't do that in all schools, ds is first on the register too!
