To wonder why on earth people report posts?

curlew · 12/12/2013 14:16

Well, obviously if they are libellous or "outing" I can see why, but otherwise it just leaves bizarre gaps in the thread, and means that people have no idea how bad whatever it was was. It's particularly bizarre, I think when posts are reported on somebody else's behalf. How does the reporter know that person wants the post deleted? They may want it left up in all its glory.

i don't recognise any of your namrd to be particularly open on free speech on mn

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 01:33

names

lollerskates · 14/12/2013 01:40

I don't understand - sorry.

DoJo · 14/12/2013 02:12

I have reported spam but also reported a post where the OP seemed to be unwittingly sharing a lot of information about themselves and their family.

TheBigJessie · 14/12/2013 09:31

What does whether you recognise my name have to do with anything? Or my join-date?

Coconutty · 14/12/2013 09:35

This reply has been deleted

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

neunundneunzigluftballons · 14/12/2013 09:37

I have reported posts in the past because they have appeared to be trolls. Personally I would prefer if troll hunting was allowed on the site though. It is the first moderated parenting site I have been on and taking out threads is the only negative thing about Mumsnet.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 14/12/2013 09:47

thebigjessie

some posters have been here for a while so even if they post something ridiculous that happened it's obvious that it's not a troll.

but there was a guy who started a thread asking if eating cervical mucus is a normal thing to do and when the general reply was negatory he started spitting venom and accused people of being racist.
it was obviously a troll and the thread got promptly deleted

I reported it just for what was on the thread, but also advanced searched him - he had no previous contributions.

very new posters with very controversial issues are always suspicious

do you live you life formed by guidelines mapped out by others then?

Do you think you don't? Firstly, no-one who grows up within a wider society is an island, and your opinions on right, wrong, social acceptability, etc were shaped by that.

Secondly, unless you are independently wealthy (meaning you never have to enter a workplace with Roolz) and you've set up your own independent nation with its own legal system, I expect you yourself live your life by a set of guidelines with teeth to them.

TheBigJessie · 14/12/2013 09:52

Zing

I don't think my post last night (which got that response) was really anywhere near that level of controversialness!

Jinsei · 14/12/2013 10:24

I report posts that are racist, disablist etc. Some things just shouldn't be allowed to stand. I also report suspected trolls. Don't bother reporting personal attacks etc. It's inevitable that debates will get heated sometimes, and if someone is offended, I think it's for them to report anything inappropriate.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 14/12/2013 10:32

I didn't read it Jessie

DecorKateTheXmasTreeMumsnet · 14/12/2013 11:05

Hullo everyone,

Thank you to those who, er, reported this thread to us. We understand that some folks prefer not to report (though we love it when you do), or disagree with some of our decisions - which is absolutely fine. We try our best to act consistently and fairly, though obviously we will get stuff wrong time to time, which we always try to put right.

Thanks v much for the suggestion about altering deletion messages according to the post. We have actually been discussing some changes to the message, which may be coming into effect soon . We look forward to hearing what you all think when/if it happens.

curlew · 14/12/2013 11:12

PLEASE don't tell me anyone reported this thread except as a way of suggesting more specific deletion messages?????????????

If anyone did- could they tell me why?

OP posts:
NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 11:17

Not me miss.

Deliberately didn't Even though I'm a newbie snitch, apparently Wink

Golddigger · 14/12/2013 11:18

Not me. Not sure there was anything to report? Confused

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 14/12/2013 11:21

Grin oh the irony.

I'm sure Kate just means they were alerted to the thread by one or more reports of the genius post(s).

TheBigJessie · 14/12/2013 11:26

Zing Basically, I said I would continue to attract HQ's attention to posts as I saw fit.

And that lack of moderation can go pearshaped and ruin a community, and that as a parenting forum, there's going to be very vulnerable people.

I didn't even swear Grin

Even 4chan has a report option, although the threshold for deletions is rather higher than ours. [Understatement emoticon]

Yup. Sorry, perhaps should have made it a bit clearer that we were responding to the posts suggesting alternative deletion messages which we're brought to our attention.

Regardless, people can always report threads for any reasons that tickles their fancy, and we'll take a look. Even if it's just to enjoy the irony of a reporting a thread about people reporting threads Wink

Golddigger · 14/12/2013 11:32

I agree. Vulnerable people can and do get trampled on.

Golddigger · 14/12/2013 11:32

I agree was to TheBigJessie's post.

curlew · 14/12/2013 12:00

Phew........!

OP posts:
Lighthousekeeping · 14/12/2013 12:01

If people could edit their own posts there would be less problems.

DecorKateTheXmasTreeMumsnet · 14/12/2013 12:02

@Oblomov

MNHQ really really pusses me off the other week. A poster said something. I quoted them and them went on to write tons, very personal stuff. Reported. Mn said they deleted because readers might not have realised that I was quoting a previous poster. Right. So because MNHQ assume that posters are so dim, that they can not read consecutive posts, and donor realise that I quoting a previous poster, mine got deleted. I lost a lot of respect for MNHQ over that. Their reasoning was so weak that they made themselves look pathetic. And I emailed then to tell them so.

Oblomov - we've just sent you a mail
