To wonder why on earth people report posts?

Well, obviously if they are libellous or "outing" I can see why, but otherwise it just leaves bizarre gaps in the thread, and means that people have no idea how bad whatever it was was. It's particularly bizarre, I think when posts are reported on somebody else's behalf. How does the reporter know that person wants the post deleted? They may want it left up in all its glory.

OP posts:

I feel for Mumsnet HQ here; I'm responisble for social media content for my organisation, and I know we can be sued through the bum for things which are sub judicae or libellous, and as an (albeit wealthy and popular) site, there's a lot on here which they could be held liable for. I think they are pretty conservative on what they delete (having both reported stuff which I find offensive which hasn't been taken down, and in terms of things that I've asked them to delete because I've commented intemperantly). They do a pretty good job I think.

lessonsintightropes · 14/12/2013 00:05

I do however routinely report (about 10 times in my year as a poster) on stuff which I suspect is trolling, is illegal, or is massively offensive, and wouldn't and don't report on stuff which I think is distatesful or don't like.

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:09

the whole beauty of mn is that it is a rare beaut in the www world. a free speech site only moderated by users.

i don't think in my five year of using this site i have reported more than one or two posts (that aren't my own, that i have reported numerous) .

i have the 'hit the report' button some users have, even if the post is abhorrent to some watchers it is still a free user network which is rare in the www world and should be upheld. i for one love mn for this.

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:09

i have 'ignored' lol

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:10

imo mn would be nice if just people would QUIT REPORTING

FreudiansSlipper · 14/12/2013 00:11

I have reported posts when it has turned to bullying

Hard to see how awful it is when you ar trying to defend yourself

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:18

you can't define what's going too far, so each of us decides what we want to report. It's up to MN to then take action if it wants to.

I agree that sometimes it would be good for others to see how vile someone has been, but OTOH I have reported stuff because none of us knows how upset the OP, or someone else reading will be by that particular post. I'd rather snitch to the teacher to let them decide.

A few gaps are no biggie. Once a thread becomes all mud-slingy it's pretty unreadable anyway

AlexReidsLonelyBraincell · 14/12/2013 00:18

I'd rather people reported than did all the 'subtle' troll hunting on a thread tbh.

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:20

Alex

Yes, me too.

I will report when I deem it necessary. MNHQ can then make their decision.

Self-moderation only works, if y'know, users do. If people don't report, then forums can become very unpleasant, very quickly. Nice users leave, and you can get a bullying culture. This is a huge site, with an ethos of supporting parents. Some users are going to be here during times when they're vulnerable and can't just laugh off attacks.

When you take into account that people say online stuff they wouldn't dare say in person, either because empathy or the lack of bullet-proof glass would get in the way, there will always be posts that need removing.

Besides, leaving offensive posts up condones their content to me.

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:38

I agree TBJ. Some people on here are likely to be vulnerable.

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:41

how long have you been on mn jessie?

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:44

southeast

Out of interest, why do you ask?

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:46

becasuse mn has gone up it's own arse recently

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:46

The reason I butt in here, is that I've been on here for over 5 years and I agree with TBJ.

EvilRingahBitch · 14/12/2013 00:46

I report all the time - spam, racists, homophobes, libel, contempt of court, sock puppeting, simple vileness (eg comments about a woman in the news). I don't think I've ever reported a PA on a poster on that thread, I feel that's their problem.

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:46

OK

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:47

big wow why name change then?

EvilRingahBitch · 14/12/2013 00:47

Oh and trolls of course.

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:49

southeast

Not really your business. Unless you think I'm aggressive or a troll

southeastastra · 14/12/2013 00:50

god why report, we are grown up people we can contest posts we don't agree with on the thread. or should we just bow out

get a grip, grow up and fight your own battles or report this that and the other and let free speech die?

NewtRipley · 14/12/2013 00:50

Yes, I do that most of the time. Sometimes I report
