To wonder why on earth people report posts?

Well, obviously if they are libellous or "outing" I can see why, but otherwise it just leaves bizarre gaps in the thread, and means that people have no idea how bad whatever it was was. It's particularly bizarre, I think when posts are reported on somebody else's behalf. How does the reporter know that person wants the post deleted? They may want it left up in all its glory.

Hullo everyone,

Thank you to those who, er, reported this thread to us. We understand that some folks prefer not to report (though we love it when you do), or disagree with some of our decisions - which is absolutely fine. We try our best to act consistently and fairly, though obviously we will get stuff wrong time to time, which we always try to put right.

Thanks v much for the suggestion about altering deletion messages according to the post. We have actually been discussing some changes to the message, which may be coming into effect soon . We look forward to hearing what you all think when/if it happens.

@DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry

Grin oh the irony.

I'm sure Kate just means they were alerted to the thread by one or more reports of the genius post(s).

Yup. Sorry, perhaps should have made it a bit clearer that we were responding to the posts suggesting alternative deletion messages which we're brought to our attention.

Regardless, people can always report threads for any reasons that tickles their fancy, and we'll take a look. Even if it's just to enjoy the irony of a reporting a thread about people reporting threads Wink

@Oblomov

MNHQ really really pusses me off the other week. A poster said something. I quoted them and them went on to write tons, very personal stuff. Reported. Mn said they deleted because readers might not have realised that I was quoting a previous poster. Right. So because MNHQ assume that posters are so dim, that they can not read consecutive posts, and donor realise that I quoting a previous poster, mine got deleted. I lost a lot of respect for MNHQ over that. Their reasoning was so weak that they made themselves look pathetic. And I emailed then to tell them so.

Oblomov - we've just sent you a mail
