I'm just wondering what everyone else's costs roughly are, for how many people and whether this includes lunches?

My eyes are watering at the £300+ weekly shops! Even being able to afford that it seems like an obscene amount of money to spend on food.

For me, DH and 4yo DD who has packed lunches every day for school my shops range between £50 and £70 depending on whether we need to stock up on fresh meats. We eat well on that amount, plenty of fresh fruit and veg and decent meats. I try and keep everything stocked up though, hate completely running out of things, could probably not shop for a couple of weeks if I could be arsed to get creative with the contents of the cupboards and freezer.

fatlazymummy · 11/12/2013 17:30

I've just seen the question about eating out/takeaways. We do eat out probably once every 3 months - usually at the harvester. I don't buy takeaways because I think they're rank. My 17 year old son might have the odd Mcdonalds when he's out though.

50-60 a week. For me and three DDs, including lunches. I buy alcohol when the shop is cheaper than usual!

lilyaldrin · 11/12/2013 17:37

£45-£50 a week in Aldi for two adults and a 3 year old, including cleaning products, treats and the odd bottle of wine.
Probably another £10 in corner shop top-ups of milk, bread, juice.

I reckon we do also spend £50 a month on takeaways or eating out though.

Lamu · 11/12/2013 18:11

I agree with the sentiment of eating good food. We have cut back in other areas in order to eat well. We rarely go out to eat and have one take away or two a month. We don't drink unless we're entertaining. But we do buy organic produce. I've tried to shop in Tesco and Sainsburys to reduce the amount we spend but I've always been dissapointed as the shop has been as expensive as Waitrose.

Snowbility · 11/12/2013 18:12

We have a budget set for takeaways and meals out - shamefully I have no idea what it is - but I did agree to it, dh like to keep track. I think it allows for a takeaway every other week and same for eating out.
Juggling we used to be veggie, eating meat has added probably £50 a week to out food bill.

Whistleblower0 · 11/12/2013 18:22

About £80 a week. That's for two adults and one teen. Usually spend around £40 in tesco or sainsburys, another £20 in aldi or lidl, and then around £20-£25 in m&s or waitrose. That is exactly what i have done this week.
This doesn't include wine/ beer and only the odd cleaning product and non food item.
I stock up in poundland and home bargains for these, and we also go to costco about once ever six weeks, for loo rools kitchen towels, washing powder and dishwashing tabs.( and the great pizza in the cafe there Grin
We have a take away about once a Month, and also eat out regularlyBlush

Averages at about £70 a week, two adults, 2 DCs (5 and almost 3). Makes all our meals (packed lunch for DC1 and DH, DC2 and I are at home for lunch) plus lunch and snacks for the nanny 3 days a week and includes nappies, cleaning prods etc. We have virtually no luxuries though, don't really drink. Being able to up it to more like £100-120 would make meals a lot less tedious!

herladyship · 11/12/2013 18:50

I've posted my shopping bill upthread (approx £70) but just to add regarding eating out, we do so at least once most weeks..

If we fancy a change of scene (& no washing up!) we might use a voucher code at prezzo or zizzi

If we want to treat ourselves to really nice food we go to the family owned, expensive restaurants in the touristy bit of our town

I'm ShockShock at some of the grocery shops on here.. £300?? Does it all fit in a trolley?! Grin

nouvellevag · 11/12/2013 19:05

I aim for £40, have spare budget for £50, and if I don't make much effort to plan and budget then it shoots up to £60 very quickly (in which case I try to eke us through two weeks with lots of beany ricey meals and just a small shop for milk and bread in the second week). That's for two adults (v into food but barely drink so no alcohol in there) and a three year old.

I don't know if there's a limit to what I could spend. Well over a hundred would be easy. And lovely.

Bumblequeen · 11/12/2013 19:24

Before going on ML we spent £60-70 (2 adults, 1 young dc). This included lunch for dh and me, food, drink, toiletries.

How we kept costs down:
We bought fruit from Morrisons (far cheaper)
We bought frozen chicken pieces (Sainsbury brand)
We did not eat beef or fish
I cook from scratch

We rarely eat out or order take aways.

I love food and would happily spend three times as much on shopping.

Mominatrix · 11/12/2013 19:38

It averages to about £130 a week from Waitrose/Ocado, £60 a week from butcher/fishmonger, plus £30 odds and ends (cheese, deli items). 2 adults and 2 primary aged children who get school dinners.

No takeaways, but we have a family lunch a week at about £80, and I'll usually have dinner at our gym once a week at £30. Once a month Dh and I have a blow out Michelin meal which is embarrassingly expensive.

I make my own breads, cakes, pastas, and cook from scratch most days. Food quality and sourcing is important to me so am willing to pay more for better food.

Lifeisaboxofchocs · 11/12/2013 19:42

£130 all in. Dh. myself, 3yr old ds and 9 month dd.

We very rarely eat out or have takeaway. That includes my lunches and children but DH buys his own lunch whilst at work

Lifeisaboxofchocs · 11/12/2013 19:46

dh scoffed when i told him how much i had posted we spend. He reckons closer to £180. I am inclined to agree Blush

Lifeisaboxofchocs · 11/12/2013 19:54

although whilst i am in awe of those that can feed four on £60, when i think about it, i am not and nor should i be, ashamed of my spend.

Between 30-50 for 2 adults and a 2yo. I work for Asda so get 10% off with my staff card. Doesn't sound like much but it helps. I'm terrible though when it comes to toiletries as asda always has offers on so I stock up every week

VikingVagine · 11/12/2013 20:31

Until recently we were spending around €120/week for 2 adults and 2 children, plus around €60/week on school lunches for the four of us. I have taken over the budgeting and food planning and although the school lunches obviously haven't changed, but our weekly shop has come right down to under €50/week! However I have been using up lots of store cupboard and frozen food we already had, so the weekly spend will go up once we've got through everything. I still plan on keeping our budget under €70.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 11/12/2013 20:35

About £100 per week for 2 adults and 2 children.

BlingBang · 11/12/2013 20:54

I'm too scared to add it up but it could be about £150 a week. Really need to have a look.

jollydiane · 11/12/2013 20:56

I'm so impressed by the clever budgeting of some of you.

Near London
£120 Morrisons
£20 M&S

2 adults 1 DC (primary)
We tend to eat our once a month, and I tend to prepare family meals from scratch including packed lunches and will often have a large family roast on Sunday.

BazilGin · 11/12/2013 21:52

Gosh, I am clearly crap with money. I meal plan whenever possible and try to cut down but weekly bill for 2 adults and toddler is around 100. (This includes mine and DD lunches and all toiletries. I do buy a lot of fruit but never waste any.
My DH is on gluten free diet so I can't buy cheaper pasta or bread. i have attempted to bake gf bread but i am rubbish at that.
Would love to cut it down to 70 quid a week.

DownstairsMixUp · 11/12/2013 22:00

Ocado to as someone said above, find the food lasts longer than tesco (logner dates on things) around 60 - 90 a week depending on how much alcohol we drink, 2 adults one child, though i have a 10% discount on a supermarket i sometimes use.

whatkatiedidnext31 · 11/12/2013 22:25

This is something that is a real problem for me...we are not lavish eaters at all, and on a tight budget, howevere, I easily spend £100pw+ If not more, I have seriously no clue how people with 4+ members of the household do it on £50-£60pw...come and shop for me!
