I'm just wondering what everyone else's costs roughly are, for how many people and whether this includes lunches?

Thanks for answering. I only asked as of the posters who mentioned it there seemed to be no link between if they did eat out and what spent on food shopping. I wondered if the peoole who brought a lot of organic food ate in all the time for health reasons or because of the cost.

Passthecake30 · 11/12/2013 15:29

Probably £100 pw here on 2 adults and 2 dc, most of the money seems to go on fruit, veg, cheese, ham, frubes. We all eat quite a lot but are all pretty slim, dp is a builder and gets the major munchies after working out in the cold all day. I get asda delivered as only have a smallish tesco local.

It does include maybe 5 bottles of beer, a glass of baileys and some posh crisps for our fri/sat night tv snacks....that would be painful to give up.

ProfPlumSpeaking · 11/12/2013 15:31

I feel well out of line on our food budget. I suppose it may be partly because we eat at the luxury end of the market eg weekly organic fillet steak (about £40 for one meal there alone) and only wild line caught fish (and not from the Baltic) - also often £40 a meal, and toiletries cost a lot when you are buying premium ( I avoid parabens and lots of other chemicals etc). We also drink a lot of Innocent smoothies and other expensive soft drinks.

Creamy yes, the organic thing is part of the reason we don't eat out much - I don't want to ever eat a battery chicken, or an indoor pig, or fish that has not been sustainably fished. So when we go out, I tend to stick with vegetarian and often that is very unimaginative. Also, if we eat out, we never seem to spend less than £400 as DH is used to top restaurants and doesn't see the point in going mid-range when he can eat well at home. £400 just feels like a lot of money for one meal.

I am going to see if I can cut down to £250 per week for a while and see how it goes. Tonight I am cooking an organic courgette quiche (courgettes only £1.39 a kilo atm) and serving it with baked beans and broccoli so that should work out as a cheap meal (hmmm..factor in organic cream, pastry and eggs and it is maybe not dirt cheap).

BellaVita · 11/12/2013 15:50

About £150 a week for DH, me and two teens. (No alcohol in that, bought separately in bulk). Includes lunches for three days for DH, Ds2 and me.

Lamu · 11/12/2013 15:52

£110 for two adults and a toddler. Nappies are probably our biggest expense. It doesn't include lunches for Dp, we cook from scratch mostly and I'm a sahm so usually have lunch at home.

I'm going to attempt shopping at Aldi next week as I'd really like to bring our spend down to about £60-80 a week.

BellaVita · 11/12/2013 15:52

We rarely have a takeaway. We eat out every couple of weeks.

wigwam33 · 11/12/2013 15:56

It's in the region of £90-£100 per week for 3 adults and 1 child, but we buy everything organic and local, etc.. including meat and fish. I know this means we probably spend more than others but it's a priority for me at the moment. This figure includes everything - toiletries, cleaning products and so on. It includes lunches and we eat fish about once a week and meat about once a week, otherwise veggie food.

mrsrhodgilbert · 11/12/2013 16:03

I feel I've done well if I don't spend more than £200, half on a monday and about the same on a Friday. That's for two adults and I teenager plus student daughter who is often home at weekends. That covers everything though and I do shop in waitrose. To be honest, if I try to shop elsewhere I can't make it much cheaper. I do care that meat is ethically reared and eggs are free range. I don't go out of my way to buy organic products. I think we eat well, I enjoy cooking and trying new things. We don't have a regular weekly menu, ie certain things every Monday, Tuesday etc but I do meal plan. But I do think its an awful lot of money and wonder if we should eat differently.

bellsringingoutforMadHairDay · 11/12/2013 16:03

Usually £70-£80 a week, for 2 adults, 2 dc 13 and 10. Includes all packed lunches, alcohol, toiletries and cleaning stuff, and often gifts, stamps etc (I shop online at Tesco)

I do meal plan and shopping online keeps the price down as I don't see something and think 'I need that' Xmas Grin - it's got so much more expensive over the last couple of years though, we used to do it for £40-£50 not so long ago.

It did cost £130 last week but we had a party and guests for lunch etc, and it included loads of Christmassy stuff.

squeakytoy · 11/12/2013 16:04

Between £100 and £200 depending on how many of us are eating.. usually five adults in the house, and one dog. That includes alcohol too..

Discomama · 11/12/2013 16:10

Around £150, 2 adults and a toddler + baby but she is just BF at the mo.
I've tried being frugal but we like nice and easy to prepare food and so choose to spend a bit more money. I might try and reduce to around £100 again...

pigsinmud · 11/12/2013 16:50

I'd say about £150 for family of 6 - including 2 teens...bottomless pits! Including alcohol, packed lunches for all 4 dc and very expensive gluten free bread (£3 a loaf) for dh & ds1

alikat724 · 11/12/2013 16:51

£150ish a week (Sainsburys, M&S), for 2 adults, 1 teenager and a toddler, but can be £170 easily. Includes packed lunches for DH, toiletries, cleaning products, occasionally a bottle of half-decent wine (£8-£10) or a case of cider, lots of nice snacks and treats, and (much to DH's disgust) luxury cat food for a very fussy old pusska! We use good quality meat and mostly organic fruit and veg, I usually buy premium brands as both of us grew up VERY poor, counting every penny and feel completely decadent having a brimming fridge, freezer and well-stocked food cupboards. We could probably be snowed in for about 3 weeks before we ran out of stuff to eat, we have some wastage of fresh stuff but am getting better at managing that thanks to Jamie Oliver's latest book and awareness campaign! :)

Hopelass · 11/12/2013 16:58

About £70 for two adults and a 9 week old. Includes packed lunches for DP and lunches at home for me.

Snowbility · 11/12/2013 17:01

Around £200 a week, 2 adults 2 dcs, doesn't include alcohol, does include lunch for 3 of us and we often eat out once a week. I don't buy cakes biscuits, crisps or sweets, everything is form scratch. I don't waste much. All my meat is British free range, rarely organic. Good food is a top priority for us.

fatlazymummy · 11/12/2013 17:07

It varies, but usually under £70/week for myself and 2 teenagers. It doesn't include all lunches. It does include all toiletries and cleaning products. No alcohol, because no one drinks.
I shop at a variety of places - Sainsburys, tescos ,Icelands, 99p shop, ocassionally a local butchers and market stall for some fruit and veg.
I'm vegetarian, which helps.
Even so I find it quite hard to keep costs down. We throw very little away and no one is overweight, so we seem to be eating the right amount.

JugglingUnwiselyWithBaubles · 11/12/2013 17:14

Good food is a priority for us too Snowbility and I know we Brits spend relatively less on food than many other European countries. But we're also veggie in our family so I think that helps makes things cheaper.
Can't help looking at other people's choices on the supermarket conveyor belt and thinking they could push the boat out a bit on some better quality more interesting or tastier treats. But I know some people can't afford the luxury of this.
Anyone else guilty of having a nose?!

HalfPintLulu · 11/12/2013 17:15

About £40-45 a week for 2 adults and a 3 year old.
Tescos and the market.
DH gets lunch at work everyday and DC is at nursery full time while I work.
That's 7 dinners, my work Lunches and weekend meals.
Add on an extra £15 once a month for toiletries/ washing stuff etc.

wonderingagain · 11/12/2013 17:20

Average £8 for evening meal for four including dessert, 2 packed lunches around £4, breakfast for the family is around £4 so that's £72 weekdays

plus weekend food is around £20 per day because as we spend more on the main meal or go out or get a takeaway.

Add cleaning stuff, bin bags and toiletries which are at least £10 a week we are onto a total of £120 per week but we can survive for less if times are lean.

Bread, biscuits and milk trips usually end up in us spending more.

I shop at Lidl and do the main supermarkets for some goods.

Our diet is more meaty in winter and more veggy in the summer.

lougle · 11/12/2013 17:27

£70 for 2 adults and 3 children - adults eat lunch at home each day (DH works split shifts) and the three children take a packed lunch.

lougle · 11/12/2013 17:27

Oh, that's South East (Hampshire).

Locketjuice · 11/12/2013 17:28

£100 pw not including nappies milk & wipes which is £35 every 10 days
