To think this father shouldn't get a free Xbox One for making a mistake?

"A teenager who was scammed into buying a photo of an Xbox One on eBay for £450 has been given the real thing by an electronics store.

Peter Clatworthy, 19, was planning to surprise his four-year-old son with the newly released Microsoft console but received a picture of one instead.

The teenager, from Bilborough, Nottinghamshire, was given a full refund by eBay but still lamented that Christmas wasn’t going to be Christmas without an Xbox One.

But now a CEX outlet in Nottingham has stepped in and gifted him the video games system, which is sold out in the UK."

OK, so he was scammed but the listing did say it was for a photo and he received a full refund from eBay. I think that's where this story should have ended. It's gone too far now. He shouldn't be rewarded for making a mistake and a four year old doesn't need an Xbox One! If CEX wanted publicity, they could have donated the console to a charity.

AIBU to think he shouldn't get a free Xbox One for making a mistake and he was trying it on by saying Christmas was ruined because he couldn't get a games console for himself for his four-year-old son?

I love the hypocrisy of this website.

There was a thread a few months back about a mum on a coke binge with her kids due back in a couple of hours and she got loads of 'drink water, put a DVD on for the kids, it'll be fine' type posts.

There are also countless posts about 'wine o'clock' being drunk in front of kids, and other stuff I personally finds abhorrent which is treated as absolutely fine.

Yet here we have a dad who wanted to buy a Christmas present for his son and is laughed at, sneered at for being a teenage parent, everyone assumes the console is for him/ question where he got the money from.

No one on here knows fuck all about this dad, yet are quite happy to mock him and make snap judgements.

Its fine to be an alcoholic or junkie, but woe betide you if you're a teenage dad trying to buy your kid a present.

Its quite fucking disgusting actually.

maddening · 10/12/2013 15:41

I don't get why you're frothed up enough to care - it was a decision by a company to spend their own money - it's a nice story as a little boy will have a fab xmas present and it is funde privately so no one else's business really.

I hope that the family have a lovely Christmas- the dad sounds lovely too

CeliaLytton · 10/12/2013 15:42

YABU.

How many times have I seen on here 'my DC really wants xxxx for Christmas and it's sold out, anyone know where I can get one?'

Is it the cost of the gift you object to? Would you be just as pissed off if he had received a free toy train?

Sometimes parents like to save all year and buy their child a really special present at Christmas. He tried and was scammed. Someone stepped in with a solution. It is not coming out of your pocket.

I'm sorry if times are hard and you're struggling. I bet loads of us would have liked that kind of cash in the run up to Christmas. But being bitter about it will do nothing other than make you miserable.

IneedAsockamnesty · 10/12/2013 15:46

Do cex stock grips, perhaps you coud ask them to donate one to you.

SilverOldie · 10/12/2013 16:03

Good for him - I hope he enjoys it.

It's not an attractive trait to be consumed with jealousy about another person's good fortune as you are OP.

usualsuspect · 10/12/2013 16:07

Good for him.

No one's asked you to pay for it have they?

HECTheHeraldAngelsSing · 10/12/2013 16:08

Laly. Are you saying that the same posters that are on this threads are the posters posting the views you describe on the threads you mention?
If so, i would like the names of those posters and a link to the threads.
If. Otoh. Poster a holds opinion 1 and poster b holds opinion 2, there is no hypocrisy. I am not bound to uphold or be consistant with the opinion of any other member on this site and no other member of this site is bound to uphold or be consistant with any view of mine.
I hate sprouts. There are posters that love them. That is not hypocrisy. That is different people with different views.

usualsuspect · 10/12/2013 16:10

Wine for LadyRawr.

LalyRawr · 10/12/2013 16:12

Hec you are, of course, completely right.

I just got so bloody pissed off reading the comments posted on here, that I kind of gave up on reasonabilty and just posted what came to mind. Blush

My main point stands however! He is a parent, just like most of us. Buying a present for his kid, just like us. He shouldn't be mocked ot laughed at or questioned as to his job role and take home pay just because he is a teenager.

Topaz25 · 10/12/2013 16:12

I'm not jealous of the X Box One. I just think his mistake shouldn't be rewarded and he's trying it on by claiming his kid's Christmas would be ruined without a console.

usualsuspect · 10/12/2013 16:13

HopeClearwater,I bet he bought it with your tax money.

LalyRawr · 10/12/2013 16:14

Haha, usual maybe the fact U don't drink is the problem!

I may be less uptight if I did Grin

LalyRawr · 10/12/2013 16:14

I* not U, clearly. Stupid phone.

usualsuspect · 10/12/2013 16:16

There are some nasty posts on this thread though.Laly.

NorfolkInGood · 10/12/2013 16:22

A 4 year old could not use a XBox One, trust me on this.

usualsuspect · 10/12/2013 16:22

So what if he's trying it on.

No skin of your nose is it?

cantheyseeme · 10/12/2013 16:22

If i had wanted to get my dds something big for xmas and was scammed it would piss me off enough to ruin xmas, i know people buy ipads for 4 year olds so why is it so hard to believe he bought his son (well tried) to buy his son a console? You seem bitter because like you say it costs more than your rent, not the guys problem, he was just very jammy Grin

usualsuspect · 10/12/2013 16:22

Off*

NorfolkInGood · 10/12/2013 16:26

Without boring you all about the machine itself (I have one). The 4 year old must be the smartest 4 year old in history to be able to use it. Also if he was I like to hope he would've pointed out that his silly Daddy was bidding on a picture on ebay Wink

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 10/12/2013 17:35

My friends 4 YO uses an Xbox one perfectly well so that is a daft comment, loads of very young DCs can use games consoles from about age 2 or 3, depends what they are used to. Obviously the games are put on for him but he can actually play it (it was not bought for him as it is fairly extravagent for a 4 YO TBH).

I would be upset if I had tried to buy a gift for xmas (regardless of who it was for), he paid full whack anyway so could have gone elsewhere rather than ebay so he must have been pretty upset when he received a photo then couldn't get the console as it was sold out.

MoreThanChristmasCrackers · 10/12/2013 17:39

I think this is lovely and I'm glad for their good luck.
OP jealousy isn't very nice, especially when it concerns a child.
Why can't you be happy for them? I hadn't heard the story until your thread, but I think it shows a true xmas spirit and of course is good publicity for the shop.

BeyondTheLimitsOfXmasability · 10/12/2013 17:44

My three year old can use the ps4. Hence proving ps4s are better Xmas Grin

Not that I ever claimed its his, he can bugger off - its mine, all mine!!

CloverkissSparklecheeks · 10/12/2013 17:46

We have gone for the PS4 also, can't beat playstations IMO. The xbox is ugly so he is BU for that Xmas Grin We are more excited than the DCS will be I think!

Waya · 10/12/2013 17:47

YABU

tracypenisbeaker · 10/12/2013 17:52

YANBU.

Why reward stupidity? The word 'photo' was in the title. I think the lad was an arse spending that much money on himself (I won't be convinced otherwise) near Christmas and trying to play the boo-hoo card and convince everyone it was meant for his child. Asshole.
