AIBU?

To think this father shouldn't get a free Xbox One for making a mistake?

"A teenager who was scammed into buying a photo of an Xbox One on eBay for £450 has been given the real thing by an electronics store.

Peter Clatworthy, 19, was planning to surprise his four-year-old son with the newly released Microsoft console but received a picture of one instead.

The teenager, from Bilborough, Nottinghamshire, was given a full refund by eBay but still lamented that Christmas wasn’t going to be Christmas without an Xbox One.

But now a CEX outlet in Nottingham has stepped in and gifted him the video games system, which is sold out in the UK."

OK, so he was scammed but the listing did say it was for a photo and he received a full refund from eBay. I think that's where this story should have ended. It's gone too far now. He shouldn't be rewarded for making a mistake and a four year old doesn't need an Xbox One! If CEX wanted publicity, they could have donated the console to a charity.

AIBU to think he shouldn't get a free Xbox One for making a mistake and he was trying it on by saying Christmas was ruined because he couldn't get a games console for himself for his four-year-old son?

How would his four year old's Christmas be ruined?

It wouldn't. We all know the console was never intended for his son, let's be honest. My youngest is 5, plays the Wii occasionally, but prefers his dinosaurs and lego. Don't most small children actually want toys (or a cardboard box) for Christmas?

He deserves the new console based on my enjoyment his story in the papers gave me.

I chuckled for days, often at rather inappropriate times due to his photo holding the 'print out' popping into my head.

I'm still giggling now at the thought, yes its childish, I know that. But his facial expression was a picture and the Ebay advert was blatantly selling a photograph.

When I read that the seller had inserted a note stating 'thanks for your purchase', I howled and produced Gazza tears.

So yes, give that boy a console. He made my week.

YANBU.

Basically he's been given a free console and is £450 better off for being stupid. The console will not be for his son it will be for him. CEX have used it to get some free publicity to make us think "oh aren't they lovely".

Stupidity reaps rewards in this day and age sadly.

If it was for a pic, how did the bid even get to 450GBP??!!

Report
NorfolkInGood · 10/12/2013 14:25

because he thought it was the machine even though the listing stated it was a picture

Report
diddl · 10/12/2013 14:28

But it suggests that others were bidding?

I don't really see why they've included his age.

Well I do really, it's just so people can froth a little more :o

Anyone read the comments on the link?

"Note: he doesn't actually have a four year old son. He was given a print out of an ultrasound and assumed that was it."

:o

I think he just has a photo of a random 4 year-old that someone gave him and believes that's his child Grin

What I really want to know is how that company can justify giving him an xbox one when they're sold out? What about all the people on waiting lists etc who also won't have one for Christmas? Sold out my arse. (Just as a point I'm not one of those people waiting for one nor do I have one already in case it sounded like I was bitter Grin)

YABU OP, he had a bit of bad luck, then a stroke of good luck. Fair play to him. It's not his fault that you're jealous.

I must admit I did snurk at the comment "four years ago he bid on condoms but only received a photo" or words to that effect

CeX are an exchange shop though, aren't they? So they get stuff sold to them and sell it on? So I doubt they would have waiting lists as what they can sell on depends on what people sell to them in the first place.

Ah Heartbroken but they aren't called that any more, it now stands for the Complete Entertainment eXchange.

Gamerchick depends on the franchise, was OK in my branch, everyone was happy to explain why something had failed if it had done. And would usually quote you the price it would get which sometimes includes getting the test person to look it over first.

Amber it's a totally different company, you wouldn't expect John Lewis to fulfil an order from Mothercare which was sold out Confused CEX don't buy wholesale, they just trade items, so they have a steady supply even when stuff is sold out everywhere else.

YY they never have waiting lists.

Sometimes there are physical fights in the queue. It's a perk of the job.

In my experience they're a bit like we buy any car. They give you a price before testing then knock nearly 40 quid off the price afterwards for something small. Where's grainger games quotes the after price cex quote upfront. The idea to have you wanting around for an hour and just be happy to get put of there imo.

Yeah I heard some of the branches are like that. In our branch though (smaller branch) everyone was trained on test so you sort of know what grade something's going to be when you're quoting. And if in doubt we were told to always quote the lower price or say "It will be between X and Y" because, like you say, to get told a higher price and then find it's lower is disappointing. But I think some people have the backwards idea that if you quote a higher price the customer won't go elsewhere and then even if it is lower they'll take that price because they've already waited long enough. There is no official line on it so it depends if you have a customer savvy manager/till person really.

I want to know what job this 19-year-old has got that he can support a four-year-old and fork out £450 for a Christmas gift. Does it say anywhere?

I completely agree with you OP.

Yeah fair enough he might have been scammed but he got his money back meaning that he now has money to buy one himself when they are back in stock.

Oh and as for the comments about the xbox not being for the child. I can quite believe that it was for the 4 yr old. I know a few people who buy a console for each of their children.

He wasnt in the wrong, the person who scammed him was.So he got refunded and a new x box so why does it bother you.Its not ot of your pocket.
And i thought Scrooge was make believe.

He could have a minimum wage job and have saved since he heard there was a new console coming out.
