AIBU?

To think this father shouldn't get a free Xbox One for making a mistake?

"A teenager who was scammed into buying a photo of an Xbox One on eBay for £450 has been given the real thing by an electronics store.

Peter Clatworthy, 19, was planning to surprise his four-year-old son with the newly released Microsoft console but received a picture of one instead.

The teenager, from Bilborough, Nottinghamshire, was given a full refund by eBay but still lamented that Christmas wasn’t going to be Christmas without an Xbox One.

But now a CEX outlet in Nottingham has stepped in and gifted him the video games system, which is sold out in the UK."

OK, so he was scammed but the listing did say it was for a photo and he received a full refund from eBay. I think that's where this story should have ended. It's gone too far now. He shouldn't be rewarded for making a mistake and a four year old doesn't need an Xbox One! If CEX wanted publicity, they could have donated the console to a charity.

AIBU to think he shouldn't get a free Xbox One for making a mistake and he was trying it on by saying Christmas was ruined because he couldn't get a games console for himself for his four-year-old son?

The company can give stuff away to whoever they want, for whatever reason they want -- and I imagine doing it in 'controversial' circumstances just gets people talking about it more (like this thread!) hence more publicity for them.

I don't see how it affects you, really Confused

I really think he was trying it on by saying it ruined Christmas in the first place. Christmas should be about more than things surely? He set up the perfect opportunity for a company to swoop in and save a little kid's Christmas in return for free publicity.

Yabu. It is nice to see people getting a break. The lad had a spot of luck, nothing not to like about that unless you are generally a bitter and jealous type.

Topaz - I agree with you. He was stupid to get scammed in the first place, but he got his money back - so even if he couldn't get the XBOX1 in time for Christmas, he could have got one as soon as they were back in stock.

Surely no-one's Christmas could actually be spoiled by not having the latest games console?

How come CEX had one if they were all sold out?

Oh yes the guy who wasn't smart enough to read the listing properly set up a big old media hoo ha to gain an xbox.

That's what I didn't understand, how can Christmas be spoiled by not getting a games console? It should be about time with family, not things.

You don't have to be particularly smart to figure out whining to get what you want, toddlers manage it.

It's fine if its for himself but its the "Sad Face" nonsense because it was a christmas gift for Tiny Tim rubbish. It's manipulative.

Well its more than just a gaming system.

That listing was appalling. The word photo was in the title only. The rest of the listing looked legit and was an obvious attempt at deception.. no better than scam cold calls wanting your bank account details.

So what if he got given one.. you sound well bitter OP.

I used to work there. It's pronounced see-ee-ex! Most of the internal names for things are puns on the "sex" pronunciation, though. Cexlife, Cexfest, Cex test. The reciepts say "Have a CeXy day!"

They don't have a helpline any more, though.

Console would have cost them £430 either in cash or credit to whoever traded it in - they don't buy wholesale.

I fail to see his sense of entitlement tbh. He went and bought one like you do and got horribly scammed. He was gutted, like you and everyone else would be.

If he had paid a tenner for one and got scammed or went to the papers saying he couldn't afford in first place then it would be a different matter.

The poor soul got lucky with cex, don't be so bitter!

Ring them up and say "my christmas is ruined because someone else got something for nothing and it wasn't meeeee"

CeX always have stuff in stock when everyone else is sold out, that's why they price new releases so high. They'll end up making a loss on most of the consoles they have in stock at the moment as they are forced to drop the price to lower than the current buy-in value.

It's pronounced see-ee-ex!

I've always referred to it as 'Computer Exchange', thus avoiding any muckiness

What is the point of being bitter?

It won't take his console away, he won't even know how you feel and if he did, he wouldn't care, you are not out any money because of it, it isn't going to change your own situation for the better and the only person who feels bad is you.

There's no benefit to you of wasting your time thinking about any perceived unfairness. Better to focus on your own christmas and having a lovely time. Let this stranger get on with it! He can have a christmas with his new toy and he can deal with all the people out there who will be frothing at the mouth because of it.

He's going to have a shitty time as he will be pulled to pieces because of this, poor bugger.

I pronounce it see eee ex as well. They're bandits when you try to sell stuff there. Grainger games is much more honest from the off.

I heard he's since sold it!

Mr Clatworthy previously made headlines in 2007 when, aged 12, he used his judo skills to catch a drink-driver who had crashed into three cars in Ilkeston Road, Radford.

I'm with you Topaz

He got a refund.

How would his four year old's Christmas be ruined?

There was money to buy him stuff!

Report
MikeLitoris · 10/12/2013 14:15

He actually contacted the seller to clarify an they assured him it was an actual console according to the daily fail.

I really can't get worked up about any aspect of this story.
