That I can't get pissed at Christmas!
I'm going to be the only sober one there and booze is normally what helps to make the whole thing less annoying and more easy going!

I hope I don't get left in charge of everyone's kids because I will be sober - I can't be arsed.

So I'm going to have to lay down the rules early which will make me look like a miserable beeyatch - which I suppose I am! Is that unreasonable or should I sort of take my turn as childminder of the day hoping that I'll get the favour back one day??

Roll on Xmas 2015 - it's my turn to get SHITFACED!! (Except then I'll have two kids under three years old....,. So maybe roll on Xmas 2030! Woo hoooooo!)

Glad I'm not related to any of the po-faced sanctimommy pearl clutchers who've commented to the contrary, Christmas with them must be a riot of sober board games and orange juice

FFS! We have a terrible attitude towards non-drinkers in this country.

I think you need to have a fair experience of being sober to really appreciate how boring, yet utterly mindbogglingly ridiculous drunks can be. There is a big difference between being a bit tipsy and shitfaced. Tipsy can be good company. Shitfaced a total self-promoting nuisance.

And I do feel sorry for children who are left to fend for themselves at Christmas while in the presence of large groups of shitfaced adults, instead of spending quality time as a family enjoying each-others company, watching movies and playing board games.

I reckon, when I one day die, I will not regret not being drunk more, but instead regret not spending enough quality time with my kids.

I enjoy a few drinks but the OP seemed to be saying the adults were going to get so hammered she was going to have to look after all the kids which I would be furious at!

And then I felt sorry for her and now I am a po santcimommy with a stick up my arse.

Wow..does it really bother people if they can't drink? I will have a drink at Xmas but I wouldn't be too fussed if I couldn't. Worrying.

Hubby and I don't drink much as we both have to drive next morning. Christmas is the one time of year we let our hair down and it's snowballs, mulled wine and cocktails all the way. I have great memories of tiddly adults being daft. No biggie

OP, I feel your pain, I was due yesterday so should have a baby free womb by Christmas but will be breastfeeding a (hopefully few weeks old!) newborn!

Summer was awful, especially the heatwave BBQs with everyone enjoying a drink and party festival I (ill advisedly) attended at 6 months! I honestly didn't think I was a 'drinker' but gosh how I've missed getting nice an tipsy when the occasion calls for it! Envy

Have a little half glass of bubbly with some orange juice on the day if you fancy it ( I did at my sisters wedding a month ago Blush ) Don't take on all the childcare duties and instead make the most of stuffing your face with any food you fancy!

Let me reveal a little secret. It is possible to still have fun when you're sober. It doesn't automatically make you boring.

It's also possible to have a drink of alcohol without getting shitfaced. You know, a middle ground.

As some who grew up often being the only sober, compos mentos one in the house I can confirm what others have said about it not being nice for the children. In fact it's horrible being a primary aged child and having to sort everything including dinner, phone calls, tidying etc because you're the only one capable.

Wow, I thought having to get hammered to have a good time was something people grew out of? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a couple but I enjoy myself a lot more now I don't drink too much! Congratulations, of course!

Look - I don't think non - drinkers are dull, nor do I think you should be so wankered at Xmas that you can't remember how many kids you've got.. More that I miss a good glass of champers and I don't want to be the go-to childminder all day or stuck with boring relatives because I don't need to be fixing myself drinks and hanging round the kitchen.. Rightly or wrongly not having a drink in hand does seem to make you seem 'available' hahahah.

Good suggestion of cake - I've had a lot today and it was most satisfying!!!! Delicious!

Ive never understood the 'how will i cope without a drink' types. Unless you have a drink problem i'll assume you spend most of your life sober so you will cope just like you do on all the other sober days right?

Vampyreof · 07/12/2013 18:54

The only problem with not drinking is that when everyone else around you is, there's a great big communication barrier. And people seem to drink more at christmas.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 07/12/2013 18:56

Op how many people are you having for xmas that there will be so many boring people and children for you to babysit? And how long will it go on for? Im guessing a few hours. You'll cope. And just refuse to babysit. If someone leaves their child with you just say youre not a babysitter youre there to enjoy xmas.

grumpyoldbat · 07/12/2013 18:56

Drink something that looks like alcohol so you look less available.

I'm born in early January and my mum maintains that Xmas pregnant was her best ever as everyone around her insisted she take it easy and rest. Bugger the booze no cooking, feet up time!

Mouthful It wasn't you who was being tosser about drink, it was another poster. Not only Cake but make sure you get the first turn in the Biscuit tin! And take two; one for you and one for the baby. Wink

Yeah, you're right - I do spend most of the time sober - I have really drunk much at all since 2010 and before that was only about three glasses of wine a week - but there is something about enjoying a glass or three of champers spread out over the day at Xmas that has always been good fun!

Obviously I'll live - I'm just saying I will miss it. Just like if you all couldn't have an Xmas dinner and you had to have fish and chips instead. Not the end of the world but just not the same!

Best thing about not drinking really for so long is never having a hangover! Worst is having to play organised games which I hate, and listening to a lot of repeated stories and having to do my very best 'enthusiastic listener' face!

I've never been drunk in my life, never had a shit Christmas either. I won't touch a drop this year, it makes me ill, but hopefully the kids and I will have a nice day.

I don't agree with the notion that non-drinkers are boring. I am quite capable of having a good time, I just don't make the show of myself that some drinkers do!

Grin

So you will get a taste of what you sound like to the 'boring' people when youre drunk every other year!

Just dont play the games. You dont have to do anything if its not your thing.
