'text' - 'toxt'?

That might do it.
at texties.
That would be instant grounds for divorce chez Moondog

OhWellWhatToDo · 07/12/2013 14:36

I say text.

And pack lunch.

A thread a while back criticised saying mash potato, instead of mashed!

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/12/2013 14:36

Yeah, I had someone tell me he had no more 'texties' left.

My face must have been Shock

Elizabeththefirst · 07/12/2013 14:37

It's a brand new fucking word. The 'correct' way to say it is how people actually use it. Which it looks like is going to be 'text'. Whatcha gonna do about it?

moondog · 07/12/2013 14:38

In same veing, noticed last summer that Americans now say

'couple days/people/sausages'
instead of 'couple OF days/people/sausages'

When did this dullardly practice creep in?

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 07/12/2013 14:40

Bunny - sound slow? Hmm

Aggressive much? Well, weirdly, as I've only come across people who use 'text' on here, I think most people will continue to use the English language correctly and not talk like thick idiots. Just because people use it, that doesn't make it right - just like people who write 'his been shopping' on Facebook. Uh, no, he hasn't, 'he's been shopping'.

CarolPrankster · 07/12/2013 14:46

Teenagers don't text anymore they use "whatsapp" get with it old folks Xmas Grin

Innit

Elizabeththefirst · 07/12/2013 14:47

Language essentially has no rules. If most people use it in one way consistently, then 'the rules' will catch up.

CarolPrankster · 07/12/2013 14:48

No idea what the past tense is though

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/12/2013 14:48

I use Whatsapp too, but only because it's freeeeeeeeeeee!

I thought teens used Kik?

HawtChocolate · 07/12/2013 14:50

It makes one sound dim, agreed@OP

OhWellWhatToDo · 07/12/2013 14:50

My DS says 'I whatsupped' for whatsapp.

LoonvanBoon · 07/12/2013 14:52

My inclination is to say "texted" but am not passionately attached to it! Thought this blog entry was interesting - especially the point that a new verb will pretty much always be assumed to be regular: so in that case would be spelt texted, not text. That doesn't settle how it would be pronounced, though.

donnie · 07/12/2013 14:53

'texties' may not be such a howler as people think.

Did you know that the plural of cello is 'celli', for example? No, didn't think so .

IMO the past declension of 'text' should be 'taxt'. Not to be confused with 'taxed', of course Wink.

FredFredGeorge · 07/12/2013 14:53

Heartbrokenmum73 That is exactly how it works in the English language - it is only usage that decides what's right, certain usage is more preferred than others and groups use language to define their identities too. So what is correct can very much depend on the circumstances and who you are talking between.

People who dictate how everyone else talks seems not to realise this, it must make it very difficult for them to converse with the vast majority of English speakers in the world without sounding out of place.

Elizabeththefirst · 07/12/2013 14:54

Heartbrokenmum, with your dismissive and snobby insult 'thick idiots', you are not only declaring yourself to be the worst kind of class-anxious snob but also that you know nothing about how language developed and continues to evolve.

Htfh

CarolPrankster · 07/12/2013 14:54

No, my resident expert teens has not hear of kik

Sorry.

And yes, freeeee!

CarolPrankster · 07/12/2013 14:54

heard

donnie · 07/12/2013 14:55

Indeed Moondog I hate that too.

I also detest 'I am going park' or 'they've gone cinema'. WTF HAPPENED TO THE MIISSING 'TO THE'??????????????????????????

HanneHolm · 07/12/2013 14:55

Mashed potato.
Texted
Packed

PrimalLass · 07/12/2013 14:55

Sorry, but 'texted' makes you sound a bit like a thick teenager grin. Even my 12 year old knows the difference.

And IMO text makes you sound like a thick adult. You don't say "I email you yesterday" so why "I text you yesterday"? It sounds like someone learning English and not getting the tense right.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/12/2013 14:56

FredFred

I don't actually correct people on things - apart from my dc as I think that's part of my remit Grin

But I do grind my teeth at things...

georgettemagritte · 07/12/2013 14:57

Texted is in the OED. It's a simple past tense in English. It has a precursor form meaning "to letter" or "to inscribe" that dates from the early modern period.

Irregular past verb forms are normally older Saxon coinages, pre-Latinate borrowings. Text is a recent Latinate coinage so follows the standard Latinate -ed suffix for the past tense.

"Text" as the past form is simply ungrammatical. I can see how people like it, but it just isn't correct.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/12/2013 14:59

You don't say "I email you yesterday" so why "I text you yesterday"? It sounds like someone learning English and not getting the tense right.

I've just re-read my post - I meant 'text' makes you sound like a thick teenager!

Whoops. I need to do my proof-reading, don't I? I actually agree with the OP!!!
