*as in

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 07/12/2013 13:54

I wear uggs and have tattoos so I fit into what you expect from a 'text' user.

Texted sounds daft.

themaltesefalcon · 07/12/2013 13:54

"I despatched to him an electronic message via the mobile telephone."

Surely only such a construction proclaims me as a Native Speakerâ„¢ in all my majesty!

canweseethebunnies · 07/12/2013 13:55

It is not! There are plenty of irregular verbs in the English language. There are loads with the same present and past tense: hit, cut, shut etc

This is a 'new' verb. There is no 'right' past tense. Get a grip!

PrimalLass · 07/12/2013 13:55

Or as in test/tested.

Doubletroublemummy2 · 07/12/2013 13:55

both are wrong, "he sent me a text" it is a noun not a verb

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 07/12/2013 13:57

I text him, I text her but I never text you

Grin

Texted sounds utterly daft in my accent. It sounds like 'tex-stid' Confused

BunnyLebowski · 07/12/2013 13:57

Exactly canwe. You don't say hitted or cutted or hurted.

Texted sounds just as wrong as all of those to my educated ear so I'll stick with text.

HanneHolm · 07/12/2013 13:58

oh well if oyu have an accent you might find it hard Wink

OP posts:
PrimalLass · 07/12/2013 14:00

Exactly canwe. You don't say hitted or cutted or hurted.

But you do say fasted.

AnonymousBird · 07/12/2013 14:01

" X sent me a text" or "I sent X a text", surely?

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 07/12/2013 14:02

Verbs which end in T are often irregular so it makes sense that "to text" would be irregular as well. It's pretty hard to say "text-d" which is what it ends up being.

IamInvisible · 07/12/2013 14:02

I wear Uggs and I say texted, what does that make me?

canweseethebunnies · 07/12/2013 14:03

Or... If you put it another way, they're both right. Can't we all just get along? Smile

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/12/2013 14:03

Haitch?! Shock Angry

SPsWantsCliffInHerStocking · 07/12/2013 14:04

I don't even know what haitch is

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 07/12/2013 14:04

So 'are you seat' or 'are you seated'? Sane thing. Seriously...

OttilieKnackered · 07/12/2013 14:09

Agree with all those that say that plenty of verbs take an irregular suffix, so no reason why text can't.

And to the poster who's flapping about it being a noun, hundreds of words are both nouns and verbs. I went to a dance/will you dance with me? Let's go for a walk/ walk this way. It's perfectly valid.

donnie · 07/12/2013 14:14

Indeed; there are no hard and fast rules pertaining to the past declension of verbs; for example:

eat - ate
speak - spoke
shit - shat
text - ?

As far as I'm concerned there is no correct past declension since 'text' is such a new 'verb' (although as a pedant I refuse to refer to it as anything other than a noun Wink).

BlueBirdy · 07/12/2013 14:25

And tex'd is the abbreviation of texted? Completely agree with canwe Anyway, it's pronounced 'tex't' just the way 'shipped' is pronounced 'ship't' and not 'ship-ped'. Maybe it's to do with the aspirated consonant on the end. But don't listen to me, I'm only 'forrin' Hmm

Heartbrokenmum73 · 07/12/2013 14:32

Sorry, but 'texted' makes you sound a bit like a thick teenager Grin. Even my 12 year old knows the difference.

And you can't compare it cut/hit etc because a 'text' refers to a 'text message', and you wouldn't say 'I message him' because then you just sound like a caveperson (not sexist Wink). Hit and cut are actions, so you wouldn't say 'hitted' or 'cutted'.

And as for saying 'haitch' - again, my children know to speak properly - why are some adults proud of their ignorance???

Haitch & M, HaitchMV. No no no no no.

But 'texties' is worse...

HanneHolm · 07/12/2013 14:33

It's not pronounced text't. You weirdo !!
Texted. Like rested

OP posts:
HanneHolm · 07/12/2013 14:33

Lol. Teenagers don't say texted. They're all wrong.

OP posts:
HanneHolm · 07/12/2013 14:34

So you say I message him. Not I message. Point proved. QED

OP posts:
HanneHolm · 07/12/2013 14:34

Lol messaged. I'm a rantin'
