To think that belief in Father Christmas is not comparable to religious belief.

Just that really. I have noticed that the expectation is that we all go along with the pretence of FC for the sake of parent's children's sensibility, but the same is not afforded where religious belief is concerned.

I'm still waiting for confirmation that there is nothing in the qur'an about it being OK for a man to beat his wife.

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:17

You'd have thought god could have sent another prophet down to clarify things.

FreudiansSlipper · 09/12/2013 15:17

Hetti girls of 9 married then, life expectancy was not what it is now

that was life then, it is not now muslims recognise this

and calling a prophet a rapist is really not on

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:18

You'll wait a long time for that curlew. I've already quoted the passages where it says it's fine.

friday16 · 09/12/2013 15:18

Hetti girls of 9 married then, life expectancy was not what it is now

Reduced life expectancy doesn't mean earlier puberty, though, does it?

peacefuloptimist · 09/12/2013 15:19

Oh for goodness sake. The text doesnt change but doesnt mean our understanding of it doesnt. Is that so complicated to comprehend. Just because you take in to account context in which the verses are revealed doesnt mean we are saying it is out of date. There is a whole science of Quranic studies. Part of what they look at is something called asbab al nuzul which means reason for its revelation aka context. Thats why most muslims dont commit atrocities not because we dont have as strong or even a stronger faith then radicals. How hard is that to understand.

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:19

Again: Well there does seem to be some confusion amongst your fellow muslims, freudian.

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:20

Quite hard, obviously, for many muslims.

FreudiansSlipper · 09/12/2013 15:21

no there is no confusion they know what they are talking about

i know a little

though i am not a muslim

friday16 · 09/12/2013 15:23

There is a whole science of Quranic studies.

Science? Seriously?

If you think that exegesis of old texts is a scientific endeavour, it's not hard to see the force in Dawkin's barbed comment about the number of Nobel Prizes, is it? I'm down with the intellectual value of textual exegesis and hermeneutics, but to describe them as a science is simply absurd.

curlew · 09/12/2013 15:25

So what was the immutable miraculous word of god can be changed by interpretation to mean completely the opposite of what it used to mean?

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:25

No confusion? The muslim world is all in agreement with the interpretation of the koran by the muslim posters on this forum?
I think not.

peacefuloptimist · 09/12/2013 15:27

Hmm What were you offended Friday. Okay let me change that to methodology. Feel better now? Guess atheists can be just a petty as religious people. Grin

HettiePetal · 09/12/2013 15:28

that can be applied to life then, 2013 and 1510

Oh, I see. So sex with children was OK in 1510? See, I don't think it was ever OK. I can just about forgive people since our morality has evolved - but I think a prophet from Allah should know better?

Or - shock - was Muhammed just a person, no more holy than I am?

Maybe that explains the raping children thing. Because the "prophet" business really doesn't.

Islam is not true. Neither is Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism or Judaism.

We're arguing about a myth invented in the 7th century.

People are dying for a myth.

It's that fucking stupid.

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:29

calling a prophet a rapist is really not on
We don't believe he was a prophet.
No special treatment, in fact, he should probably have behaved better if he wanted to be one.

HettiePetal · 09/12/2013 15:34

A 9 year old girl 1,000 years ago was pretty much identical to 9 year old girls today. Menstruation is getting earlier, not later.

I can't believe any decent person is attempting to justify paedophilia.

HettiePetal · 09/12/2013 15:39

calling a prophet a rapist is really not on

Erm...why?

Don't tell me - Muslims are offended.

My calling a 53 year old man who has sex with a 9 year old a rapist is MORE OFFENSIVE than, er, a 53 year old man having sex with a 9 year old?

And I'm expected to respect this crap?

I don't. I think it's obscene.

redshifter · 09/12/2013 15:43

optimist , you still havn't answered my question re. nationality.

It is important for me to know this so I can understand your thinking when you say that you and Backonly have different allies.

FreudiansSlipper · 09/12/2013 15:51

i do not believe in god

but i do believe in showing respect to peoples faith

i would not call jesus a con man many would because i feel that is disrespectful to what many many people believe in

you may not have an issue disrespecting peoples faith i do as i see it as an insult to peoples intelligence

yes kitten muslims on here have read the koran they do know what is written in the koran

and no i do not repect all views, that is not the same as faith before anyone bothers to start with well i do not respect racists blah blah

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 15:53

That's not what I'm saying Freudian - I'm saying that other muslims thoughout the world appear to disagree with them.
Disrespecting someone's faith is a small matter when that faith is used to justify the unjustifiable.

peacefuloptimist · 09/12/2013 16:03

Why should we answer your questions? You didnt answer mine kitten. Im not obliged to jump to your command. Anyway I have answered plenty of questions as have others you just keep shifting the goal posts. Whats the point? You'll just move on to something else that is as equally irrelevant to this thread about Santa. You have already come to your conclusions I would just be wasting my time. I feel sorry for your muslim friends though. Do voice these opinions to them and see if they still want to be your friend.

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 16:04

What question?

KittensoftPuppydog · 09/12/2013 16:07

The goal posts are the same, just different ways of showing you where they are.

I have had 2 muslim friends in my life. One was before I knew anything about Islam. I was shocked when he underwent a forced marriage though.
The other one I've lost touch with, and I wasn't close enough to ask her these questions. If I hadn't moved town I would have got round to it though. She was extremely intelligent and I would like to know what she really thought.

If it was the question re assad and israel etc, I already told you that I probably agree with you about most of it.
Though I don't see what it has to do with this conversation.
