Do your 5 year olds know one direction?

Just that really. My dd has come home singing one direction songs today she says they have all been singing at lunch. Should I be making more if an effort with more grown up things for her. I'm not really a 1D super fan but I don't want her feeling left out at school in coming years. Is there anything else I'm missing !? X

Oh god yes.

But only because it was their tidy up music. It comes from other children with older siblings, or youthful teachers. No need for you to try to get down with the yoof, just indulge their interest as and when it arises.

PrincessScrumpy · 06/12/2013 21:28

Yes dd1 is in year 1 and knows a few songs - mostly because her closest friend had an 11 year old sister. I don't think she'd recognise them if she saw a photo just if she heard one of their songs. Another girl in her class apparently thinks they are sexy :S her mum was telling me how she's sold all her dd's sulvanian families and princess dresses as she's only into 1D and wants the bedding etc (at 5 years old). My dd still loves barbies and thinks boys are too rough and smelly. It may be a stereotype but I prefer that than talking about boybands like a teen at her age.

She won't feel left out her friends will "educate" her and anything you like will probably not be what she's into when she gets older :)

Upcycled · 06/12/2013 21:30

Last year when my daughter was 5 the same happened. I just kindly ignored. Then we went on holidays and she spent a lot of time with her teen cousin and friends who are all 1D fans. Now when she is in MIL's car, MIL puts the cd for her to listen, and MiL gave her a 1D calendar.
I really hope she isn't get any 1D stuff for Christmas. She is 6 now but I still think it is too young.
So basically my approach is to acknowledge, change the subject and re-direct.

My 5yo can sign a couple of the songs due to them being the tidying music. Also a bunch of P3/4 girls that she knows spend most of lunchtime 'performing' them in the playground and dd is absolutely fascinated by the 'big girls'.

I don't think she'd know who 1D actually are though!

legoplayingmumsunite · 06/12/2013 21:42

I think DD1 might be aware of their existence but she is mainly into rock music so we are introducing all the songs we think are lyrically appropriate at 5. But the main music she listens to is still 'they might be giants' kids albums.

minionmadness · 06/12/2013 21:43

My YR1 ds loves 1D. He tells me they are cool and awesome!

He'll grow out of it... she says hopefully.

MikeLitoris · 06/12/2013 21:44

My 2yr old can name Harry and Zayne from 'on an necktion' she loves 'thats what makes you beautiful' if it comes on in the car we have to be silent and stay in the car til it finishes. She aldo has a worrying obsession with Justin beiber Xmas Shock

But I do have a 9yr old that she gets it all from.

She will pick it up from her peers.

Oldandcobwebby · 06/12/2013 21:51

As a 50 year old man, I can be excused from knowing anything about their music, I'm sure. However, I did see a video of them the other day, and I was amazed to see that they are apparently so freakishly ugly that it was necessary to digitally air-brush them. Very odd indeed.

Summerblaze · 06/12/2013 22:00

I was trying to sing some xmas songs with some Yr1 children today and one girl told me that Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer was rubbish. I asked what she thought was good and she said "Jessie J" Shock.

My DD is only just getting into boy bands etc now at 9.

NothingMoreScaryThanAHairyMary · 06/12/2013 22:01

My 8 , 6 and 4 year old are all aware of them and 'like' their songs. I refuse to encourage and idolisation as I think that makes my dd's vulnerable.

They are boys in a band who sing songs, the eat and shit like everyone else and do not need idolising.

Upcycled · 06/12/2013 22:01

'on an necktion'
Grin

CoffeeTea103 · 06/12/2013 22:03

Their song the 'story of my life 'was filmed in our apartment building Smile didn't even know that we had an underground theatre! It was an exciting week!

MinnieBar · 06/12/2013 22:07

Nope, not a clue.
But she does know the moves to Gangnam Style…

fuzzpig · 06/12/2013 22:09

With this kind of thing I just take the approach 'don't encourage, don't deny'.

Of course children pick up on this stuff and I don't really like the fact it happens younger and younger these days (in my perception anyway) so I won't get any merchandising for them. I feel the same about character (eg moshi monsters) merchandising though so it's a consistent approach.

I have put 1D stuff on my iTunes because I actually love it :o but for us music is purely about the music IYSWIM? So we don't really take any interest in the band themselves.

DD (6) likes them but hasn't got obsessed, 4yo DS recognises 'Hawwy' though and loves him. :)

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 06/12/2013 22:11

No. But I fear that we're going to have to stick Radio 1 on sooner or later so he can catch up.

trixymalixy · 06/12/2013 22:13

My 4 year old asked for one direction on in the car today. Not something I've encouraged, must be from nursery.

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 06/12/2013 22:13

Ooh Minnie, DS does do a pretty mean Gangnam Style, and he does know the lyrics to What Does The Fox Say....

craftynclothy · 06/12/2013 22:14

Yes my 6 and 4 year olds do. They both have 1D t shirts and they frequently play 1D on dd1's mp3 player. Considering I'm more into Avenged Sevenfold it's like a form of torture Grin

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 06/12/2013 22:15

No, but she sings "last Christmas I gave you my heart, and the very next day! you gave it awaaaaaaayyyy".

fuzzpig · 06/12/2013 22:18

BTW my DCs don't watch TV (only DVDs) so only get this stuff from school really, apart from the odd music video on YouTube (rarely - the only reason we started this was because DD did the 1D version of that Blondie song at glee club)

DS did actually ask for a 'Hawwy Doll' after seeing it Hmm :o there's no way we'd spend that much on a doll but DH picked up one of those keyring things which DS now has on his book bag! DS is really into singing and dancing (DSD, his big sister, has already planned a career for him in musical theatre...) so I think he's more likely to 'idolise' bands than DD, but like others have said I still wouldn't encourage idolisation beyond "I love their music" type things. Celebrities are just people, it's their actions or creations (be they songs, movies, books whatever) that I am interested in not an elevation to hero status

CocktailQueen · 06/12/2013 22:18

Only because dd age 9 liked them....

AChristmassyJerseySpud · 06/12/2013 22:19

My nearly 7 year old has just informed me right on fucking christmas of course that she loves 1D and would love a necklace and hairbrush that shes seen in Claires Accessories as well as a cd to listen to.

I'm into rock music. My car feels violated by the cd she now has.

But its normal now
