Do your 5 year olds know one direction?

Just that really. My dd has come home singing one direction songs today she says they have all been singing at lunch. Should I be making more if an effort with more grown up things for her. I'm not really a 1D super fan but I don't want her feeling left out at school in coming years. Is there anything else I'm missing !? X

OhWellWhatToDo · 06/12/2013 22:19

Yes. TBH, in their school at least, they'd feel very left out if they didn't. They beg for Capital FM and also like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus (no vids!), Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Martin Garrix, Katy Perry and Little Mix Confused

Tbh, I'd let them get on with it. Not to my personal taste but I don't stop them.

My 5 year old god daughter loves them. She has the posters and bedding too. She is very into pop music and loves their cd's so that may be why. She says they are all her boyfriends....

Nope and I plan to keep that way.

kelper · 07/12/2013 20:15

My ds loves one direction :-/ I have no idea why, but we have all their albums, and he's got a couple of dance routines worked out to some songs.
We also have a 1d advent calendar and a book about them, and went to see the film in the summer!

plentyofsoap · 07/12/2013 20:27

Yes he likes a couple of their songs that sometimes come on the radio. However, nothing comes close to ant and decs get ready to rumble. He heard it once then demanded it non stop. I only just remained sane.

lljkk · 07/12/2013 20:29

No. Even though big sis is a fan.

thenamestheyareachanging · 07/12/2013 20:32

No, my 6 and 4 yr olds never heard of them - but then, they don't go to school.

babybythesea · 07/12/2013 20:36

No. But that's because I don't listen to radio other than Radio 4 (and very occasionally Radio 2), and I don't have their CDs. So far, from school, she has learnt the song "Bring it all Back" (S Club 7 - her school are clearly keen to keep up with the latest trends!) and "When the Going gets tough" - the Boyzone version. I have tried to put right this latter horror by playing the original in the car!
However, she is very much into Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, and John Denver. She also loves some classical music, especially the music to the Nutcracker. We have a slightly eclectic taste in music in our house. I am sure school will have more and more of an impact but right now, it seems not to have done. She would have absolutely no idea what the group or any of their songs were if you asked her or played them to her. Neither do I to be fair, so I wouldn't recognise them even if she started singing them!

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 07/12/2013 20:37

Angry Yes.

He has asked for 1D things for Christmas.

I don't know where it's come from, unless it's his classmates' older siblings.

SomethingOnce · 07/12/2013 20:42

One Direction. What a cynical load of shit (they have a perfume out called 'Our Moment' - bleurgh!)

I'm nipping this sort of nonsense in the bud by making DD listen to proper music on YouTube. Her tastes are shaping up pleasingly eclectic.

Junebugjr · 07/12/2013 20:48

DD1 is 5 and in year 1, she loves them.
She puts their songs on YouTube and gets her 2 yr old sister to dance along with her. I now have DD2 whining about 'put wan erection on' as soon as we get in the car. DD1 has 1D stuff for Christmas, as she has written a letter to Santa asking for it. She looks at us and all worried asks if she's naughty then santa won't send the 1D stuff will he? Scuppered.

manchestermummy · 07/12/2013 21:11

DD1 aged 6 loves them and says she will be marrying the boy she sits next to in her class, Harry from 1D and daddy's mashed potato. She has bedding, socks ffs and a couple of CDs. She prefers one but me and DD2 (aged three) prefer the other...

FlipFlippingFlippers · 07/12/2013 21:28

We were on a train last year and my dd (2 at the time) pointed and shouted very loudly "one erection" at a lad who had the crappy floppy hair style all these youngens seem to have. It was hilarious. Poor lad was beetroot purple.

shrunkenhead · 07/12/2013 21:58

No, she still watches CBEEBIES and doesn't watch other channels or post 7pm TV as it's bedtime. At family parties/weddings etc she may be exposed to this sort of music but wouldn't be able to put names or faces to them.

swampytiggaa · 07/12/2013 22:37

My smallest is five. She knows about one direction but prefers Black Sabbath. And Rammstein. She looks a bit horrified at parties when they start doing gangnam style...

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 07/12/2013 22:43

No thank god.

I am trying to push a wide range of stuff here before the juggernaut of "bleed the little children dry while it lasts boy band crap" makes her beg for our money for them.

BertieBowtiesAreCool · 07/12/2013 22:46

No but he does know some other pop songs like Gangnam Style, Sexy and I know it (cringe!), call me maybe and a couple of other pop type songs which I can't remember.

FryOneFatManic · 07/12/2013 22:52

My nearly 10 year old DS knows One Direction, but couldn't be less interested. Give him Linkin Park or Rammstein anyday Grin chip off the old block, alright

ChristmasJumperWearer · 07/12/2013 22:58

Yes, my 5yo does thanks to school. In Y1.

She has also discovered the concepts of God, death and marriage, and indeed, Gangnam Style and the f word. All at school.

Other children with older siblings impart a great deal of knowledge to our PFBs. Grin

Enb76 · 07/12/2013 22:58

My 5 year old likes ska. Desmond Dekker rules this house.

scarlettsmummy2 · 07/12/2013 23:03

My daughter just turned five and knows who one direction are, and even recognises Harry when he is on his own. Apparently it is all they talk about at lunchtime. We don't have any CDs or anything at home so it baffles me that she recognises them already!

MacMac123 · 07/12/2013 23:20

The op post made me laugh because my 5yo in reception spotted a cardboard cutout of Harry styles in a shop and said 'that's Harry from one direction'. He's pretty sheltered and we don't really watch music tv or anything. Have NO idea how he knows but yes it was and think they pick up these things more school

Just shows Cowell's influence starts young!

vestandknickers · 07/12/2013 23:24

My 8 yr old DD would have no idea who they are thank the lord!
