Just watching the 6oclock news and, 20 minutes in there is a report about a well known Olympic diver having a boyfriend. FFS, is that news? No, it blooming ain't!

I think it is more the celebrity gossip that is news, rather than the subject matter. Two people getting married isn't news. Neither is two people having a baby. But William and Kate dominated the news while they were doing perfectly ordinary things.

This, I think, is more relevant. Especially as Tom is involved in the olympics and there's the current controversy with the winter olympics at the minute.
I also think it is very clever of him to release the video himself, and not do it through a magazine that could twist his words.

This is important news as so few sportspeople come out, especially Olympic athletes. His career will be affected by being gay as he may not be able to have sponsorship from companies that have branches is certain countries such as Russia etc, and it could therefore also affect his future TV career. Why do you think so many big Hollywood actors are afraid to come out?

I think it is an amazing thing he has done. Not everywhere is as PC as mumsnet, and he is now a role model for younger children who are going through the same.

posted on the other thread in chat but basically i can see why he's done it but its a shame he's had to, the ideal is for nobody to have to 'come out' straight people dont need to do they. Even despite Tom Daley filming is own video so that nothing would be twisted people are still seeing what they want to, ive already read 'he's just saying he's still into girls not to alienate his fan base' erm more likely he is bisexual or maybe just fell for a man this time. I've read 'he must of agonised over this for years' not necessarily peoples sexuality changes and evolves all the time, there are millions of bisexuals out there, loads are married or have girlfriends/boyfriends many will never tell anyone as they are content that way. There is still alot of fear about sexuality sadly and i can see why he chose to share this he is after all a great role model but on the other hand the bigger a deal we make it, papers, news etc the more it seems like its odd or something to be newsworthy of.

As DoctorDonna said, it was to get his own story in his own words over and to stop the tabloids having a field day along the lines of how they did with Clare Balding. The Daily Fail's already been on to his grandparents about the story.
