to think it is totally reasonable for cat owners not to pick up poo

I mean how can they?

I have 2 cats and now 1 puppy. I watch my puppy when she is out and know where she is, I can see if she is pooing. If she disappears under a bush I check (with my sense of smell) and pick up if necessary. I carry poo bags everywhere.

However, my cats come and go as they please. When they were kittens I had a litter tray that they used, but as they started to go outside with a cat flap, they stopped using the litter tray.

My (ex) neighbour asked me to come and pick up after my cats, but as there are lots and lots of cats in the area, there was no knowing that it was my cats.

I am not a bad pet owner. But I think it is unreasonable to expect cat owners to have the same poo pick up responsibility as dog owners.

We used to have cats but don't anymore. We're considering have our lawn paved over because every fucking cat in the neighbourhood shits on it. DH has to round up half a carrier bag other people's cats' shit every week or so in the summer so he can mow & we can't let our boys out to play on it with clearing the lawn. Even when its cleared the residue still pongs, to the extent we don't sit out there much in the summer nowadays. Our immediate neighbour's cat has his daily cra

Like I said. Not my problem the law states they have the right to roam. Also my female cat wouldn't poo or wee in front of anyone... she gets stage fright.

Our immediate neighbour's cat has his daily crap on the lawn every morning when I'm making breakfast, regular as clockwork. Perhaps it's the same with your neighbour. I've got a whole lot more sympathy for her than you.

LST · 02/12/2013 19:47

TBH I find it laughable people get so bothered by shit. Most cats bury it.. sone don't, mine included bar one. But fuck me there are worse things in the world than animal shit in your garden.

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/12/2013 19:48

My cat goes down drains Confused No clue why. He has a perfectly serviceable litter tray but still chooses to shite in my bath Angry When he's outside he uses storm drains, I've seen him, as have several neighbours who gleefully report to me how odd my cat is.

I still find these threads vaire amusing.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2013 19:49

Not on MN LST, it's up there with parking in a P&C space without a child. Shock

TeddyBare · 02/12/2013 19:51

YABU. If you have cats and you know they're not pooing in their litter tray then you must know they're pooing somewhere else. Even if some other cat is also using your neighbours lawn as a litter tray it's likely that your cats pooed somewhere else too so it probably balances out. People who are not willing to clean up after their pets shouldn't get them.

LST · 02/12/2013 19:52

Dooin one of mine does that!! We used to have a wet room and he used to wee right down the plug hole... Grin Then try and cover it Hmm ...

I find it odd sparkling.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/12/2013 19:52

I always Hmm when people say it is foxes and badgers. I live somewhere with no foxes or badgers and lots of cats. Still lots of cat shit in my garden. The neighbours want cats, I don't, but I have to have shit in my garden.

I find it annoying because I have a toddler and a lovely garden but I can't just open the door when she wants to play outside. No, I have to look for, clean up and deal with faeces before I can let her play. From an animal that kills songbirds.

LST · 02/12/2013 19:53

I'm ok then teddy as I clean up after my dog. That must balance out my clean up shittedness.

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/12/2013 19:55

Yup, that's exactly what he does LST Grin

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2013 19:55

I wondered when the bird population would be mentioned.

We have fox poo in our garden. The foxes come for supper, and the hedgehogs do so there is probably hedgehog poo out there too.

I think there are foxes everywhere nowadays.

LST · 02/12/2013 20:00

Fox poo is vile! I'd prefer cat shit anyday of the week! Fox poo is all jellifed and sticks to everything.. bluggh!

Plus sparkling have you seen the mess birds leave on cars and windows! Shock The bastards! My dad got shat on on holiday in the summer! I can garantee my cats have never shat on someones head! Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/12/2013 20:00

I'm not in the UK, Sparkling. No foxes. Lots of bloody cats. No hedgehogs either. No badgers. We have raccoon here but it is odd that the 'fox' poo in the UK and the 'raccoon' poo here all looks/smells remarkably the same because it is cat poo.

TeddyBare · 02/12/2013 20:01

LST you should clean up after all of your pets. Your quota of animal shit to clean up is 1 dog and 2 cats - simple. If you're not sure which exact shits are done by your cats then cleaning up some seems a reasonable compromise. Why should your neighbours clean up after them? You could always keep your cats in the house or a garden run if you particularly want to be sure that you don't accidentally clean up after someone else's pet (which ironically is exactly what you expect your neighbours to do).

LST · 02/12/2013 20:02

And squirrels! They can remember where they bury their nuts, but you'd be buggered if you expect them come back to your garden with a shit shovel and a pair of marigolds!

hipocondriaco · 02/12/2013 20:02

It's not cat poo, it's the garden gnomes, they come alive in the night, drop their pants and lay a fat stinking turd in your gardens just to annoy you. That's what local cat owners tell me anyway.

LST · 02/12/2013 20:05

I have 3 cats actually. And both neighbours have concreted back yards and garages. Ours is the only garden garden so I can pretty much tell you that I pick up my cats and more than likely next doors cat shit too.

I'm well over my quota... We have all sorts of wildlife too and not to mention the 12 gypsy horses that wander around the estate.

LST · 02/12/2013 20:06

ahh hipo have you never seen Gnomeo and Juliet Wink Grin

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2013 20:07

Blimey hipo you are right Shock

Writerwannabe83 · 02/12/2013 20:09

I have got two outdoor cats who are in and out all day and night via their cat flap but we still have a litter tray which thankfully they use to do their poos in. Clearing out litter trays isn't my favourite past time but I would be mortified if they had a poo in someone else's garden. Both my neighbours have children and the thought of them playing outside and coming across some of cat poo makes me feel quite uncomfortable.... Hmm

Thisismyfirsttime · 02/12/2013 20:10

Presumably if you're not bothered that your cat is shitting in my garden you won't mind if I bring my dog over for a big steaming dump in the middle of your drive/ front path that I won't bother to pick up?

campion · 02/12/2013 20:12

Cats don't crap in their 'own' gardens because they are never in their own bloody gardens, they're always in someone else's.

Next door neighbour moved and took his 3 cats. Hooray!! Then a 'cute' half grown cat started coming and is now never out of here, mainly because its only thought is to hunt and kill and we have lots of trees, greenery and birds.

It gets the water treatment when I see it but is basically undeterred. As for it being a pet - the owners must hardly see it because it's always skulking- and crapping- here. Too many cat owners are deluding themselves when they think they have a faithful pet.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2013 20:13

Dogs prefer to go in public places from what I can gather. Like the middle of the junior footy pitch. Someone has to be sent out with the poo shovel prior to kick off.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2013 20:14

Cats are by no means 'faithful pets' campion. they are free to move out at any time.
