To wonder if Christmas cards are a sign of popularity?

Someone in work was talking about how many Christmas cards she has to send and another person said they only send and get a handful. When person B went out of the room person A said 'that's funny. I always thought B was quite popular'.
Do other people equate cards with popularity? Half the cards I send are to people I hardly ever see, or relatives. In fact, I'm probably friendlier with some of the people I don't send cards to than with some of the people I do.

Er, no.

Not any more. Me and my mates don't send cards. The only card I now write are for my family. I'd rather get a nice phone call, personal text or email than a Christmas card which contains nothing personal and that you know is just one in a pile of 100 that 'has' to be written as it's on the list.

My kids possibly do. Adults don't though.

Some of my friends send cards, some don't. The only people who would be bothered about not getting a card are family. Every year I wonder I'd I could get away with not sending any at all and then always chicken out.

People send cards out of duty, habit or fear of causing offense a lot of the time. Nowadays a lot of people just text or email their friends around Christmas time, so cards are no real indicator of anything.

Actually someone in work this morning has been sighing and talking loudly about how she has loads of cards to send, and she wishes she didn't get so many because she runs out of space to put them - followed by a tinkly 'look how popular I am' type laugh. I thought of this thread and smiled.
