To not be so bothered that neighbour is now pissed off with me? (boring xmas lights thread)

Ok so myself and neighbour share a hedge, its actually on my property so my hedge, but separates both houses. For an eternity, every single christmas, neighbour likes to invite poundland to throw up in her garden choose carefully selected christmas lights to make her house look as trashy as possible.

This is my ds's first christmas where he will notice things and hes already loving the lights we see in shops so i thought i'd buy a large net of lights to put over this hedge, be a bit different from neighbours 2 lines of fairy lights. I also bought 2 large snowflake things for the front windows and some stars to go around the door. As i was putting them up this morning neighbour came back from doing her shopping and just stood there staring with her mouth wide open in horror, i said hiya, she said hiya back then went in.

Dp says i should have asked her if it was ok - err ask her if its ok to put christmas lights on my own hedge? Im not even that bloody bothered about them just thought it would be nice for ds to look at, which is why ive never bothered doing anything like this before.

Now neighbours have been arguing all day about various things but they keep coming back to the bleeding lights and how ive apparently taken over? (walls are paper thin, they argue quite a lot, never about christmas lights though) Should i just take them down? I dont really see why the fuss if im honest but she is a bit obsessive about everything, for example shes the type to put her wheely bin in her parking space right outside her house. She hates anyone parking within an inch of her house, yet her and her teenage children can park where they feel like. So the great christmas lights debacle of 2013 will keep her moaning for quite a while.

Go to the pound shop and get several 'Santa please stop here' signs. And turn them into a fence around the hedge

How funny. We have neighbours like this. Hypocritical beyond belief. Keep your pretty lights up and turn up the volume on your television.

I'm back again for an update to start the week. Thanks everybody for making me laugh so loudly I startled the dog!
Your neighbour sounds utterly shiteful. Please could you do all of the suggestions? I'd be willing to pay a couple of quid towards it just for the continuing amusement.

Grin Thanks

Hedges being living plants that grow across the boundary are shared irrespective of who bought it. The neighbour, therefore, has the right and responsibility to maintain and do what they like to their side but only up to the boundary line.

Sorry for not getting back sooner.... well came down on monday morning, most of her garden "adornments" were missing, all the plastic flowers, the solar lights, the solar massive train... well you get the idea. The same night (and this is karma for me) my lights stopped working!, checked them all and they hadnt been cut or anything so just put it down to being crap lights and ordered some more.

Didnt see neighbour for the whole week (and i did think what if she had seen this thread, and realised it was about her, but i doubt she can even work the internet). So friday i went to get something from the car and she was out brushing. She souted over to me to ask whether my lights had stopped working, they had and the new ones had arrived that day just hadnt had a chance to put them up yet, so she goes on to say how she has some more and shall she throw them on. I told her i had some more but as she went on and on i though it obviously means more to her than me so relented and let her put hers on. Im brushing the path while she does this and look over - the hedge is at least 6 metres in length, she has the worlds smallest set of christmas lights in her hands. I asked how big are they, she says well it says it has 100 bulbs, turns out they are just under a metre and the look of dissapointment on her face, well ive never seen anything like it.

So i said do you want me to put mine on (at this point i realise shes desperate for anything shiny to go on this bleedin hedge, and make a note to ask dp what he thinks of building a wall this year instead). so i put mine up, and when she sees all 30 m of them in all their glory she just stands there with her pursed lips, and says oh, there so vivid arent they. I hope they dont sjine through much through the windows.

I can tell you that they bleedin do. I now sit in the back living rm cos id end up as a zombie otherwise with them on, even on the slow setting they are still fast. But dp says well we've had to put up with the multicoloured offerings from them for years its there turn now. The snowflakes arrived yesterday, i now feel bad for putting them up as when i asked her what happened to all her stuff in the garden turns out somebody had robbed quite a few of the flowers and she was weary to leave the rest out. So either some kid walked past and took a few for a laugh, or someone on this thread hunted her plastic flowers down for there own garden cos poundland had run out.

So there you go. i can honestly say if your thinking of starting a lights war with your neighbour this christmas, its really not worth the effort, but for true entertaiment value, since i put my lights back up they have been arguing about anything and everything the past few days!

In other news the crazy house down the road has there lights up, they go on tonight apparently in tribute to someone who died (never knew this before) i can still take pics of that if your all still interested! palm tree snowman is ready and waiting! as is the massive fountain of flowers. Hmm

sorry there was not much more of a war!
