To take the dcs to an 'all you can eat' chinese buffet for christmas dinner?

Blush My dts (8) spend christmas day with their dad, stepmum and little brothers. I celebrate christmas with them on christmas eve and they head over to dads at bedtime. Because they do christmas dinner, regardless of what we eat, the boys got turkey dinners three or four days in a row (my house/dads/his mums/stepmums mums) so a couple of years ago I said they could choose the meal we had on 'our' christmas. This has been fine, and lovely to give each boy his very favourite meal on that day. This year they have become aware of the 'all you can eat buffet' and want us to go there for our christmas dinner. Am I just being snobby or is this a soul-less idea?

No it's a great idea. They'll love it. Have fun. Grin

TwelveLeggedWalk · 29/11/2013 20:39

I think it depends on the restaurant!

manicinsomniac · 29/11/2013 20:41

Wellll, I can see why you find it cringey but I can also see why your boys want something different and you did say they could choose.

I think you'll have to suck it up - maybe you could wear a mask! Grin

SkinnybitchWannabe · 29/11/2013 20:43

That sounds great. We have a Chinese takeaway just before Turkeyfest begins Grin
Enjoy OP

SeaSickSal · 29/11/2013 20:44

No, sounds like fun!

EirikurNoromaour · 29/11/2013 20:44

Why not? Take them to one that does decorations and crackers and all the whatnots. It will be fun!

happyoverhere · 29/11/2013 20:45

My kids would love it. Get with the festive spirit, put a party hat on and eye it. They will remember it far more than YET another turkey dinner. Go for it!

DontSweatTheSmallStuff · 29/11/2013 20:46

Sounds like a great idea. Would do it here but ds's are fussy beggars and wouldn't eat chinese.

happyoverhere · 29/11/2013 20:46

haha eye it, I mean enjoy it Blush

We have a lovely Chinese in our village and know the owners, have hired it out for parties etc.

They are having a Xmas all you can eat and a e offered the kids to go there on Xmas day this year as we have a rare one on our own. We thought we'd splash the cash and have a relaxed meal with no effort.

Much to our surprise as they love it, the kids turned it down (13 and 9). They have requested turkey at home ( we don't usually have turkey as DH and I aren't keen).

So traditional turkey it is for us. I think a Chinese buffet is ok if it's somewhere you know well and will have a good atmosphere. Not sure I'd go to a random Chinese though.

peaz · 29/11/2013 20:51

Sounds fab. I know it's not a buffet but if you're in London then New World in Chinatown is a fab dim sum place. They go round with trolleys of all sorts of delicacies and you chose what you want. You could then go see the Christmas lights and shop displays.

horcruxmanzini · 29/11/2013 20:53

That sounds brilliant - the kind of childhood Christmas Eve treat you remember all your life! (as long as they don't get MSG/salt/sugar overload and double up the Christmas Day crazy energy...)

honeybeeridiculous · 29/11/2013 20:53

Sounds fab, we always have a Chinese on Christmas Eve, before the turkey onslaught begins Grin

bigbrick · 29/11/2013 20:53

Great idea and nice that you are indulging them with what they would like for their special christmas meal with you

Mogz · 29/11/2013 20:54

Sound a great idea, plus you won't have any washing up to do!

trashcanjunkie · 29/11/2013 20:58

aaah well, this actually has helped me to feel much better about the whole idea! Thanks guys. twelveleggedwalk It's one they have been to once before. They absolutely loved it. peaz we're oop north, but thanks for the recommendation Grin

Who the hell cares?! I mean that in a nice way btw! My friends used to always have takeaway curry for Xmas lunch as they dont like roast dinners. Lots of people rolled their eyes at it, but I dont get why as they didnt have to eat it!

I think its really nice to do what you want because its what you want and not do the old "oh but we must have Turkey because its Xmas". And far nicer for you as you dont have to cook!

Does anyone actually like turkey anyway?

Amy106 · 29/11/2013 21:28

Sounds like a great idea. Maybe our family should do the same thing. Smile

womma · 29/11/2013 21:31

That sounds like a great plan, it's great that you've let them choose what they want to do. Can I come?

I do actually like turkey. My fella is going to take the double dinner hit, as he'll go to his mothers for christmas dinner on the 25th and then will make our christmas dinner for our day on the 26th. He's bloody delighted with this as he loves turkey dinners food in general
