To take the dcs to an 'all you can eat' chinese buffet for christmas dinner?

Blush My dts (8) spend christmas day with their dad, stepmum and little brothers. I celebrate christmas with them on christmas eve and they head over to dads at bedtime. Because they do christmas dinner, regardless of what we eat, the boys got turkey dinners three or four days in a row (my house/dads/his mums/stepmums mums) so a couple of years ago I said they could choose the meal we had on 'our' christmas. This has been fine, and lovely to give each boy his very favourite meal on that day. This year they have become aware of the 'all you can eat buffet' and want us to go there for our christmas dinner. Am I just being snobby or is this a soul-less idea?

Back in America, if you are Jewish, it is an unwritten tradition to go for Chinese food on Christmas/Easter/big Christian holidays. Increasingly that's what lots of people do for the holidays anyway, so you're right en vogue.

when we were kids we had family over Christmas eve roast dinner, xmas day warmed up Chinese as my mums theory was we were so full of chocolates we weren't bothered about a big dinner and grans on boxing day...

I never knew anything different till we had to write about xmas dinner in school and I drew some spare ribs...enjoy your Chinese

I want a chinese all you can eat right now. I think your dc? are on to a winner. Who wants another bloody roast dinner anyway, I´ve already had 4 this week (bought an 8kg turkey from ASDA and roasted it because I realized that it was less than 4 quid a kg. It was supposed to save us money. I was supposed to freeze it all in nice neat weighed out bags. Does anybody have a spare freezer that isn´t packed full of monster shaped ice cube trays and broccoli? Bags?... No?

Yeah, not the best idea I´ve ever had.

Last year dp was away working over Christmas, so I asked what they wanted as I didn't want to do the whole turkey dinner for me and 3dc.
Our menu for the day was this-
Breakfast- jelly and ice cream
Lunch- pancakes
Dinner- pigs in blankets and proper home made chips.

Was fab. They still talk about it. I don't think they could believe that I was really letting them eat WHATEVER thwy wanted.

Am giggling at the thought of a mn christmas meet up in the local chinese now. I think that would be very excellent. And loving that I'm bang on trend revenge!

We are going out for dinner on Christmas Day. My choices aren't traditional Christmas dinner related at all despite this being my only Christmas dinner so of course I don't think you are being unreasonable.

pinkmagic1 · 01/12/2013 08:40

We are going out for a buffett on Christmas day. It is an international buffett so Chinese, Indian, Italian, Thai and even roast if you want it. We went last year and it was fantastic, I had a Lamb palak and no washing up! Traditions are there to be broken.

trashcanjunkie · 02/12/2013 20:29

bloody hell pinkmagic I was so busy thinking about the non preparation required, I'd forgotten about the no washing up!
