To go to A&E with this?

Sorry if this is long winded but just that really. I know its AIBU and it should be in general health, but more traffic so please go easy on me.Grin

I have been suffering for months with back ache, crippling pain on the right hand side of my abdomen and pelvic pain so sharp it takes my breath away always about two weeks before my period. Have been getting heavier and heavier periods (really large clots etc sorry tmi) and bloating.

Had an internal yesterday in which the lovely GP I saw seems to be pretty certain its Endrometreosis (sp?) and is arranging a scan for me to confirm.

GP commented on how bloated I was and I said I always got bloating just before my period. I woke up today and without exaggeration I look six months pregnant. (I'm definitley not) and I am in so much pain with my pelvis it has physically knocked me off my feet all day sick.

Rang GP who tried to arrange for an emergency scan at gynae this afternoon and couldn't Sad but said they would see me if the problems persisted and I went to A&E. I feel incredibly stupid going with 'period pains' I always think of A&E as being somewhere you go with fallen off limbs and real life and death stuff. Confused

I would feel like I'm wasting someones time but my DM is sat with me in tears insisting I go, my aunt died of Ovarian Cancer this year and she is incredibly worried (and is therefore worrying me)

Would you go?

tia

I would go. Your GP said they will see if you if you go, so I'd go on the advice of the doctor! People go to A&E with really trivial things and your symptoms sound quite serious compared to other things. It's better to be safe than sorry. Hopefully it's nothing but you never know.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 28/11/2013 15:11

Is it an accident, or is it an emergency? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then I would go to A&E because that's what it's there for. But IMO, Endrometreosis is not a reason to go to A&E, no matter how uncomfortable you feel. Are you taking lots of paracetamol or other pain killers?

However, A&E depts are vastly overworked as it is, so if it's not an accident or emergency, you should continue to work with your GP to sort the issue out - can he refer you somewhere else if it means you get an appointment more quickly?

Binkyridesagain · 28/11/2013 15:12

Go. You have been told that if it persists and you go via a&e you will be seen. It persists so go.

dipitydoyou · 28/11/2013 15:16

Thanks for your responses.

Yes taking ibruprofen and paracetomal but doesn't seem to do much. I know A&E depts are vastly overworked and that's why I'm so worried about going.

But this is just unbearable. It's been months. I wish wish wish I'd gone sooner Sad

Same as Middleaged Accident or emergency only.

I can completely understand your mum being upset though. Is it worth calling your GP again and explaining the situation and how close you are to going to A&E. They may be able to reassure you or suggest something else.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 28/11/2013 15:21

Please go to A&E. No one here on the internet can possibly tell whether this is an emergency or not. YOu do not yet have a diagnosis so don't be put off by those telling you that endometriosis is not a reason to go. No one has yet confirmed this is what is causing the issue and your GP told you that if it persisted you should go to A&E. I'd listen to him over people on the internet - who don't know you or your history - who are saying it isn't an emergency.

takeitonthegin · 28/11/2013 15:21

Did the GP tell you to go to A&E if the problem persisted? Sorry, I didn't see that in the op, I read it that they would see you if you went to A&E (which they would have to obviously), not that the GP was advocating you attending. If the GP told you to go then I would do as the GP said.

Sorry, I must have mis-read the original post.

JemimaPuddle · 28/11/2013 15:21

If you do get a scan which doesn't show anything, keep pushing for further tests. I have endometriosis and was diagnosed a long while ago but then (it may have changed now) it could only be diagnosed via laparoscopy. I had a few different scans which showed nothing but have moderate / severe endometriosis.

JemimaPuddle · 28/11/2013 15:22

Sorry, I realise that wasn't your actual question!

WhyDoTheyDoThat · 28/11/2013 15:22

Go, I hate the attitude that unless you're on deaths door you shouldn't take up their time. It seems it's perfectly acceptable to take up their time if you get drunk and go fighting but not if you're in agony and unsure whether or not it is an emergency.
The bottom line is you don't know if it's an emergency so go and be on the safe side, if nothing else you might get some decent drugs for the pain.

Lilacroses · 28/11/2013 15:24

Please go. You sound really poorly. You don't just have "period pains".

dipitydoyou · 28/11/2013 15:25

Thanks takeitonthegin Bless her she's getting so worked up.

GP said to ring her back as got to do a pg test to 100% dismiss that as the issue (I'm not though) waiting for DH to get in shortly with one.
I'm trying to remember exactly how she worded it because it seemed that she was saying "however if you went to A&E they would have to scan you" iyswim?

Oh I'm such a worrier I'd hate to go and feel like i'm wasting peoples time but i'm in bloody agony Sad

Kewcumber · 28/11/2013 15:26

pain which can;t be managed by over the counter remedies is in my opinion suitable for A&E and I can't believe people suggest otherwise. If no other reason than to get adequate pain relied.

I have been to A&E for gall stones and kidney stones. They didn;t exactly do anything at the time but did help control the kidney stone pain and I would have been very cross with anyone who said that oain was not a good enough reason to attend A&E.

SapSuma · 28/11/2013 15:29

Well, i also have endometriosis and my pain has been totally unbearable at times, so I know how urgent it makes you feel. Do what you think is best and don't feel the need to minimise to others that its 'period pain'.its hell. I know.
If you don't go try asking the gp for strong pain relieving supositories.

WhyDoTheyDoThat · 28/11/2013 15:30

Op, if you're child was in this much pain what would you do? You are no less important, you will not be wasting anyone's time. GO

Tinpin · 28/11/2013 15:31

The GP obviously doesn't think you are making a fuss as he tried to organise an emergency scan. You should most definitely go. You should be getting your coat on. Hope it all goes well.

SapSuma · 28/11/2013 15:31

Mine is also moderate/severe diagnosed (after many years) with a laparoscopy.

eurochick · 28/11/2013 15:32

I understand that you are worried but I don't think this is a case for A&E.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 28/11/2013 15:37

On what basis Spa? How can you possibly know without knowing the OP and having medical knowledge?

BlameItOnTheBogey · 28/11/2013 15:37

Sorry, that should have been to Euro and not to Spa

WhyDoTheyDoThat · 28/11/2013 15:39

That's a pretty dangerous assumption eurochick. Even if you are a highly qualified consultant you couldn't possibly know what is wrong with OP. Severe abdominal swelling could indicate any number of problems, pancreatitis, appendicitis, burst ovary etc etc. As uk citizens we are entitled to access healthcare when we need it.

IamInvisible · 28/11/2013 15:41

I wouldn't go, and I disagree with your GP that if you went to A&E that they would have to scan you.

I was referred for horrendous bleeding, like I was weeing myself. It had gone on over a week. My GP phoned the Gynae SHO on call who arranged for me to go to the assessment unit to be seen. It was decided I needed a scan but they couldn't fit me in that day so I had to go back the next day.

I, also, disagree with whoever said that pain that can not be managed by over the counter painkillers is reason to attend A&E. If I felt like that I would be there every single day. Tramadol doesn't touch my pain, I just accept that and carry on as best I can.

Edenviolet · 28/11/2013 15:45

Definitely go to a and e.

I went once and got seriously told off by the dr as he thought my problem did not warrant treatment at a+e. I was really upset and mightily pissed off but ultimately if you turn up there they have to see you.

If you are in pain its always better to get things checked out.

Hayleychopper · 28/11/2013 15:48

Go. You are suffering and in pain, you have tried the alternatives and they haven't worked. Yes, A&E is busy but many people go with far less complaints and it doesn't always have to be an accident or an emergency.

Please go, you may have a long wait but no one is going to turn you away and refuse to see you. I hope you get sorted.

MinesAPintOfTea · 28/11/2013 15:52

I had what felt like extreme period pains and bloating, dismissed by the GP, ended up in A&E that night and had to have my appendix out as an emergency. If you are in agonising abdominal pain with no diagnosis or effective painkillers then it is an emergency.
