To go to A&E with this?

Sorry if this is long winded but just that really. I know its AIBU and it should be in general health, but more traffic so please go easy on me.Grin

I have been suffering for months with back ache, crippling pain on the right hand side of my abdomen and pelvic pain so sharp it takes my breath away always about two weeks before my period. Have been getting heavier and heavier periods (really large clots etc sorry tmi) and bloating.

Had an internal yesterday in which the lovely GP I saw seems to be pretty certain its Endrometreosis (sp?) and is arranging a scan for me to confirm.

GP commented on how bloated I was and I said I always got bloating just before my period. I woke up today and without exaggeration I look six months pregnant. (I'm definitley not) and I am in so much pain with my pelvis it has physically knocked me off my feet all day sick.

Rang GP who tried to arrange for an emergency scan at gynae this afternoon and couldn't Sad but said they would see me if the problems persisted and I went to A&E. I feel incredibly stupid going with 'period pains' I always think of A&E as being somewhere you go with fallen off limbs and real life and death stuff. Confused

I would feel like I'm wasting someones time but my DM is sat with me in tears insisting I go, my aunt died of Ovarian Cancer this year and she is incredibly worried (and is therefore worrying me)

Would you go?

tia

Triage nurse here. You have severe and worsening abdominal pain which has not yet been diagnosed.

Your GP wants an emergency scan but is unable to arrange one, so has advised you to attend A&E.

Go to A&E.

Titsalinabumsquash · 28/11/2013 15:55

Please go, I was in A&E several times with horrific pelvic pain, in the end I had major surgery to try and help with severe endometriosis.

Ignore the "it's not an accident or emergency" you're in pain, you need pain management at the very least.

Peachypossum · 28/11/2013 15:55

No one here knows if you have endo, so it makes no odds if they think endo is an A & e suitable issue.

With such bad swelling overnight and pain I would be tempted to go in, what if it's more urgent than endo? It could be a bowel obstruction for all us lot know ;)

Hope you feel better soon.

Mamafratelli · 28/11/2013 15:55

Go to a and e. I went with v similar symptoms. Eps can found a cyst as big as a melon, emergency surgery the next day. Better to be safe than sorry.

Peachypossum · 28/11/2013 15:57

That wink snuck in there, sorry! Not sure what my typing finger was thinking Blush

PlumBear · 28/11/2013 15:58

If you're very concerned, go back to your gpnand ask for an urgent referral to Gynae. They may have already done this.

I was diagnosed with a complex ovarian cyst last December. I'm having an op to remove it next Wed. So, an entire year waiting for treatment. My consultant has said she is 99% sure it's not cancer, but won't know for definite until it has been removed and biopsied. I understand that you're in pain, and that's horrible. But your go should be able to prescribe medication until you're seen by Gynae. I have had 7(!) ultrasound scans this year, and an mri, and I had to wait 3 months for two of those.

I wouldn't go to a and e, personally. I'd press for an urgent referral to Gynae.

eurochick · 28/11/2013 16:03

No, I am not a consultant and I am not attempting to diagnose the OP. The GP has made the referrral for a scan that he/she feels is needed. This is not an accident or an emergency, based on the description given by the OP. I wouldn't go in those circumstances, but if the OP feels that she wants to then I am hardly stopping her! I am just a person typing on the internet, as are we all.

My bf has endo and is in terrible pain with it. She would be in A&E for a week every month if she followed the advice to go to A&E if OTC painkillers aren't dealing with the pain.

Tryingteacher · 28/11/2013 16:04

Go to A & E

intitgrand · 28/11/2013 16:10

I think you should ring your doctor back and describe the latest developments and he will advise you what to do and prescribe pain relef or get you admitted
a&E is not the right place because it is an ongoing problem that your gp is dealing with.

diddl · 28/11/2013 16:15

So you went to your GP yesterday-things are differenet/worse today & GP can't help.

Isn't that what A&E is for?

MinesAPintOfTea · 28/11/2013 16:18

euro your bf also has a diagnosis which makes a difference as to the need to seek further medical help. If the OP has period pains half the time then it is fairly likely that if something more sinister started (with unusual pain and bloating) it would occur during period pains.

JennyOnAPlate · 28/11/2013 16:18

Worsening abdominal pain with no known cause = go to a&e.

Mouthfulofquiz · 28/11/2013 16:18

Well - they are now known as Emergency Departments, so do you honestly feel it's an emergency? If so then definitely go. If not, then you need to be speaking to your GP again and asking for a scan as soon as is possible. Get the number of the secretary who books them in if necessary to chase progress, but no point going to ED if you get seen out of normal working hours when the folk scanning are unlikely to be there. Scans will normally only be done to either diagnose or help with changing a course of treatment...

CrazyOldCatLady · 28/11/2013 16:19

But eurochick, your friend knows what's wrong. The OP doesn't yet have a diagnosis. It could potentially by a serious emergency.

I'd go to A&E.

blueberryupsidedown · 28/11/2013 16:20

Yes go, but choose your timing carefully. Friday night is a nono! Tuesday morning, yes, a lot less waiting time.

I think you should go. Undiagnosed, severe and worsening abdominal pain, family history ovarian cancer etc. Hope you feel better soon

PlumBear · 28/11/2013 16:25

My cyst was originally found at a family planning clinic. The cyst was large, complex, I'd been bleeding for a month straight and I was in pain. I still had to wait 3 months for a Gynae appointment. Just warning you really, even if you go to A&E and they find something, you will still have to wait to be seen at Gynae. And if your gp has already referred you, there may not be much point.

jinglebellsarecoming · 28/11/2013 16:29

I work in A&E (non medical) and want to reassure you staff are always happy to see people in pain. The people who are frustrating are those that could so easily wait until their gps have an appointment or have something trivial such as needing their toe nails cut (I kid you not). Another option could be a minor injuries / walk in centre if you have one. I always think of them as a half way house between gp and A&E.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 28/11/2013 16:30

I would defintelty go to a&e. I am having exactly the same problems as you atm. I spent 3 days of my last period in absolute agony, unable to even turn over in bed without crying, and I now wish i'd gone to a&e.

Instead i went to my gp and she wasn't bothered, said 'oh you've come about period pain then'. She has agreed to do an internal exam in a couple of weeks time, but thats it.
I also get the mid cycle pain and bloating, which I have atm. I am taking painkillers daily and even then I am still in pain.

I hope you manage to get seen and get to the bottom of this. It is horrible to be in pain such a lot of the time.

WaitMonkey · 28/11/2013 16:35

Good luck. Hope A&E help, definitely go. Thanks Thanks

jammiedonut · 28/11/2013 16:37

Please, do yourself a favour and listen to the triage nurse who posted upthread. Go to a&e, your doctor has told you if your problem persists to go to a&e. No average joe stranger can diagnose what is wrong over the Internet, better to be safe than sorry.

Bootoyou2 · 28/11/2013 16:38

It is still working hours so rather than worrying why don't you ask to see the emergency Gp at your practice this afternoon.

They could either a) reassure you and prescribe strong painkillers or b) decide that you were an emergency and get you seen tonight at the hospital but directly by the on call gynae or surgical team rather than by the A&e doctors who would have to make that decision and refer you on to the gynae or surgical team meaning a longer wait.

Hope you get sorted soon.

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 28/11/2013 16:38

endometriosis is very painful.

is it an accident or an emergency? no.
but you do deserve treatment. just not a&e

Bootoyou2 · 28/11/2013 16:39

Unless I am misreading your post and your Gp already advised you to go.
